1 Samuel 17:1 Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle, and were gathered together at Shochoh, which belongeth to Judah, and pitched between Shochoh and Azekah, in Ephes-dammim.
  • The armies of the Israelites and Philistines getting ready to battle.
  • Philistines coming into Judah = about 16 miles from Jerusalem
  • Shochoh = OT:7755 the name of two places in Palestine
  • Azekah = OT:5825 a place in Palestine
  • Ephes-dammim = OT:658 blood-drops; Ephes-Dammim, a place in Palestine
  • An author's right is claimed for placing the later episode here (1 Samuel 16:14,23), in order to connect and contrast the two spirits with Saul and David. The canonical order alternates David's call and Saul's.
  • 1 Samuel 16:14 But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord troubled him.
15 And Saul's servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.
2 And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and pitched by the valley of Elah, and set the battle in array against the Philistines.
  • The opposing armies are staging themselves for war.
  • By = About sixteen miles south-west of Jerusalem
  • Elah = It lay somewhere near Socoh of Judah and Azekah, and was nearer Ekron than any other Philistine town
  • 1 Samuel 21:9 And the priest said, The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom thou slewest in the valley of Elah, beho that here. And David said, There is none like that; give it me.
  • This great events took place here, there can be no doubt: the Philistines ranged themselves upon the southern hills; the Israelites to the North or Northeast. Upon the wide level valley the contest with Goliath occurred.
  • The exact position of Saul's forces may be a matter of speculation, but the late Principal Miller of Madras, who made a special study of the locality (Least of All Lands, chapter v), considered that the little valley ascending Northeast from Wady ec CunT to Belt Nettif was probably the actual Vale of Elah and that here the Israelites had their fortifications. His elucidation of the whole story is most convincing.
  • By = About sixteen miles south-west of Jerusalem
3 And the Philistines stood on a mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side: and there was a valley between them.
  • Notice = One side of the mountain Israel and the other side the Philistines and Goliath
  • The Philistines go against the laws of God
  • Everything about the Philistines is bitter
  • Romans 3:13 Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips:
14 Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness:
15 Their feet are swift to shed blood:
  • Song of Moses = Deuteronomy 32:33 Their wine is the poison of dragons, and the cruel venom of asps.
  • Deuteronomy 32:31 For their rock is not as our Rock, even our enemies themselves being judges.
  • Deuteronomy 32:32  For their vine is of the vine of Sodom, and of the fields of Gomorrah: their grapes are grapes of gall, their clusters are bitter:
  • God is our Rock = Deuteronomy 32:4 He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.
  • Revelation 15:1 And I saw another sign in heaven, great and marvellous, seven angels having the seven last plagues; for in them is filled up the wrath of God.
2 And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire: and them that had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark, and over the number of his name, stand on the sea of glass, having the harps of God.
3 And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvellous are thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints.
4 Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for thou only art holy: for all nations shall come and worship before thee; for thy judgments are made manifest.
  • Why will all people come and worship before thee?
  • Because these are with the Lord, The millennium has started
  • Revelation 1:7 Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.
  • 1 John 3:1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
  • 1 Corinthians 15:51 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,
52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
  • In the end times which side are you going to be on?
  • Verse 3 Philistines stood on a mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side.
  • 4th trump = It's to make a choice, choose to follow God or Satan
  • Notice 1 John 3:2-3 When Christ returns all will be changed into their own spiritually body.
  • When Satan standing in Jerusalem saying he is God and you're still in the flesh body you will know this is Satan.
  • Once the four winds are shut its too late to study God's word
  • Revelation 9:4 And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads.
5 And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man.
6 And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from the.
  • Revelation 7:1 And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree.
2 And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea,
3 Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads.
4 And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel.
  • Romans 11:4 But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal (Satan).
  • The 7,000 will have sealed the 144,000,  Man does the teaching but God does the sealing of His word in your forehead. You don't want to be like Eve, she listen to Satan and was deceived.
  • 2 Corinthians 11:3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.
4 For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.
  • Revelation 7:9 After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues (all races are part of the 7,000), stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands;
10 And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb.
11 And all the angels stood round about the throne, and about the elders and the four beasts, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God,
12 Saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen.
13 And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they?
14 And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.
15 Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them.
16 They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat.
17 For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.
  • Why are we in this earth age? God needs to know if you love Him.
4 And there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.
  • In the end times = Goliath = a type of the anti-christ = Satan
  • Six, Note this number "6 " stamped like a "hallmark" on this "man" (as on Nebuchadnezzar, Daniel 3) Compare the six pieces of armour.
  • Daniel 3:1 Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold, whose height was threescore cubits, and the breadth thereof six cubits: he set it up in the plain of Dura, in the province of Babylon.
2 Then Nebuchadnezzar the king sent to gather together the princes, the governors, and the captains, the judges, the treasurers, the counsellors, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, to come to the dedication of the image which Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up.
5 And he had an helmet of brass upon his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of brass.
  • We are going to see the number six written all over Goliath.
  • Six is the number of the antichrist (666).
  • Revelation 13:18  Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.
  • Goliath was most estimates over nine feet tall.
6 And he had greaves of brass upon his legs, and a target of brass between his shoulders.
  • Graves are shin armor.
  • Six weapons or protective gear are mentioned, and his spear's head weighted six hundred shekels.
  • Again, we see the number six written all over Goliath.
7 And the staff of his spear was like a weaver's beam; and his spear's head weighed six hundred shekels of iron: and one bearing a shield went before him.
  • Goliath is drawing a line.
  • There is no need for a large number of people to die here.
  • Send out your champion to fight me, and winner takes all.
8 And he stood and cried unto the armies of Israel, and said unto them, Why are ye come out to set your battle in array? am not I a Philistine, and ye servants to Saul? choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me.

9 If he be able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your servants: but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and serve us.
  • We don't have a volunteer from Israel to cross that line, yet.
  • They are all shaking in their boots.
10 And the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.
  • Defy  = mocked
  • Goliath was mocking God also
11 When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid.
  • Greatly afraid = feared exceedingly
12 Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehem Judah, whose name was Jesse; and he had eight sons: and the man went among men for an old man in the days of Saul.
  • All of these details concerning how bad the situation looked for Israel are for our learning.
  • Understanding how desperate the situation was makes the courage of David even that much more outstanding.
  • Not one man out of the armies of Israel would cross the line that Goliath had drawn.
  • Jesse sent his youngest son David to check on the welfare of his three older sons who served Saul.
  • While visiting his brothers, David heard Goliath defying the armies of Israel to send out a man.
  • David accepted the challenge.
  • Eight sons = David was now between sixteen and seventeen years old
  • For an old man = was old, advanced in years
13 And the three eldest sons of Jesse went and followed Saul to the battle: and the names of his three sons that went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and next unto him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.

15 But David went and returned from Saul to feed his father's sheep at Bethlehem.

  • Here we have another 40 days
  • 40 = the number significant of probation
  • Verse 10 - The Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.
17 And Jesse said unto David his son, Take now for thy brethren an ephah of this parched corn, and these ten loaves, and run to the camp to thy brethren;

18 And carry these ten cheeses unto the captain of their thousand, and look how thy brethren fare, and take their pledge.
  • Their pledge = a token from them of their welfare = a message or letter, or a lock of hair.
  • Genesis 37:13 And Israel said unto Joseph, Do not thy brethren feed the flock in Shechem? come, and I will send thee unto them. And he said to him, Here am I.
19 Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.
  • Where was this?
  • By = About sixteen miles south-west of Jerusalem
  • Elah = OT:425 Elah = a place in Palestine
20 And David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and went, as Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the trench, as the host was going forth to the fight, and shouted for the battle.
  • As = according as
  • Fight = place of battle

  • He was possibly descended from the old Rephaim (GIANTS), of whom a scattered remnant took refuge with the Philistines after their dispersion by the Ammonites.
  • Deuteronomy 2:20  (That also was accounted a land of giants: giants dwelt therein in old time; and the Ammonites call them Zamzummims;
21 A people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims; but the Lord destroyed them before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead:
  • 2 Samuel 21:22 These four were born to the giant in Gath, and fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.
  • His height was "six cubits and a span," which taking the cubit at 21 inches, would make him 10 1/2 feet high.
  • The scene of his combat with David, by whom he was slain, was the "valley of the terebinth," between Shochoh and Arekah, probably among the western passes of Benjamin.
  • 2 Samuel 21:19 And there was again a battle in Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaare-oregim, a Bethlehemite, slew the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver's beam.
  • We find that another Goliath of Gath was slain by Elhanan, also a Bethlehemite.
24 And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were sore afraid.
  • All the men of Israel,  were sore afraid.
25 And the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man that is come up? surely to defy Israel is he come up: and it shall be, that the man who killeth him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father's house free in Israel.
  • David wanted the will of God
26 And David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?

27 And the people answered him after this manner, saying, So shall it be done to the man that killeth him.

28 And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab's anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down that thou might test see the battle.
  • Eliab = God of (his) father

  • David saying, you should of done something already
30 And he turned from him toward another, and spake after the same manner: and the people answered him again after the former manner.

31 And when the words were heard which David spake, they rehearsed them before Saul: and he sent for him.

32 And David said to Saul, Let no man's heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.
  • David is saying, I'll fight this Philistine, Let no man's fear him
33 And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.
  • Saul telling David, he was a youth, and he was not able to fight the Philistine
34 And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father's sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock:
  • Here we see the Lion, the bear from Song of Moses and Revelation 13
  • The church of Pergamos = Satan's Church
Revelation 2:12-13 We see then, that this is an evil place, where Satan exercises his power and authority. Thou dwellest, even where Satan's seat.
Revelation 2:14 I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumbling block before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication.
They say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.
thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.
  • The devil as a roaring lion also = evil spirits = star that fell wormwood (Rev 8)
  • Bear = Symbolic to Russia

  • The whole meaning is David was protecting the Lamb = Symbolic of Israel
  • Delivered it out of his mouth = a primitive root; to puff,  blow away, scatter into corners.
  • From H6284; speech, mind, saying, spoken
  • Beard = throat
36 Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.
  • David is saying, just as God helped him slew both the lion and the bear, Also God will help him bring down this Philistine, because he hath defied the armies of the living God.
37 David said more over, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee.
  • David said, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear,
  • He will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine.
  • And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee.
  • David gave all the credit to God, he didn't say, I slew the bear and the lion
38 And Saul armed David with his armour, and he put an helmet of brass upon his head; also he armed him with a coat of mail.
  • It is easy to visualize David barely able to stand under the weight of Saul's armour.
  • David had proved his staff and his sling, to be his weapons of choice.
  • David knew he couldn't wear all the heavy armour
39 And David girded his sword upon his armour, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him.
  • He assayed = he tested the armour
40 And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.
  • David took his staff, and he chose five smooth stones
  • Five = grace
  • David put on the whole armour of God
  • Ephesians 6:11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
  • We know from Revelation 2:15 in the last days, these stones are the truth of today, to know the key of  David
  • Key of David = To know who the Kenites are
  • Revelation 13:18 = The word for "count" as it is used to count his number is used only in this verse, in the entire Bible.
  • The word count in Greek  #5585, Psephizo meaning, ''to use pebbles in enumeration''.
  • If it sounds familiar, it is because it comes from the base word #5586, psephos meaning, ''a pebble as worn smooth by handling while counting for a long period of time'', from Genesis to Revelation.
  • David wasn't afraid to cross the red line.
41 And the Philistine came on and drew near unto David; and the man that bare the shield went before him.

42 And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance.

43 And the Philistine said unto David, Am I a dog, that thou comest to me with staves? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.
  • Israel sent a boy with a staff to take on a giant
  • Philistine god was fish
44 And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field.

45 Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.
  • Goliath put his confidence in his weapons.
  • David put his confidence in the Lord.
  • David had the courage to cross that line, and God gave David the victory.
  • David killed Goliath with a sling and a stone.
  • So what does all of this have to do with us today?
  • Revaluation 13 tells us there are two red lines in the future.
  • One you will cross; and one you won't.
  • The elect will stand up for God, The elect will NOT worship Satan
  • It's up to you, follow God or follow Satan
46 This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.
  • David telling Philistine this day, the Lord will deliver thee into mine hand. And I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee
  • Why? That all the earth may know that there's a God in Israel.
  • Why are the elect deliver up? That all the earth may know that there's a God in Israel. The gospel must first be published among all nations, before the end
47 And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD's, and he will give you into our hands.
  • The battle is the LORD's, and he will give you into our hands.
  • The Song of Moses, This army is God's army
  • God does not use sword or spear, God uses wisdom, His word
  • Hebrew 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
  • His word, the truth is the two-edged sword
  • Babylon, which comes from the Hebrew word ''Babel'', means confusion.
  • This sword of truth is going to cause present day Babylon to fall.
  • Because a lie cannot stand in front of truth.
48 And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came and drew nigh to meet David, that David hasted, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.
  • What did David do? David ran toward the army to meet the Philistine
  • This is example of what will happen again in the last day
  • The elect will be delivered up
  • Why are the elect deliver up?
  • That all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.
  • The gospel must be taught to the world.
  • Revelation 2:17 we know this stone of the end times is the truth, the seal of God in your forehead
49 And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth.
  • The stone in the end times represent truth, the 7,000 are delivered up.
  • Revelation 2:17 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.
  • 1 Peter 2:4 To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,
5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
  • This is the ''white stone'' which is the hidden manna, or hidden truth that only the elect can learn.
  • Another name for Satan is Tyrus, which means rock or stone, and is the Hebrew word #6865. (Ezekiel 28)
  • Both stone and count comes from the primary word #5584, which means "to verify by contact" or "to search for".
  • Satan's seed, the Kenites, are the stones and pebbles symbolically speaking.
  • The Song of Moses tell us God is our Rock.
  • Satan is called Tyrus in Ezekiel 28:2, Tyrus in Hebrew means ''rock''.
  • Deuteronomy 32:31 states, ''For their rock is not our Rock''
  • Deuteronomy 34:4 ''God is our Rock''
  • It leaves no doubt that the Kenites rocks is Satan.
  • Satan is their rock, and his children are the stones or pebbles.
  • We see now why the word count with pebbles is used.
  • For where the children ''pebbles'' are, their father shall appear.
  • Revelation 13:18 What is his number that you are to count?
  • You are told that it is the number of a man''666''.
  • What happens at the 6th trump, 6th vial and the 6th seal?

6 Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.
  • The word ''Zerubbabel'' means to born in confusion ''to flow smoothly out of Babel'', It means ''to come out of Babel'', or out of Babylon (confusion) in this present day to learn the full truth.
  • The 7000 will bring the 144,000 and in time the whole world, out of Babel.
