daniel 9

Daniel 9                                                                                          Daniel 9    Daniel 9     Daniel 9

Daniel 9:1  In the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of the seed of the Medes, which was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans;
  • Date 426 B.C., Daniel being then eight-seven years old.
  • Darius a Mede himself, became king over Persia and Chaldeans at the fall of Babylon.
  • Darius is an appellative and means the Maintainer or Restrainer: Cyrus
  • Ahasuerus an appellative = the venerable king Astyages.
  • Made king: Cyrus was appointed king of Babylon by Astyages his father.
2 In the first year of his reign I Daniel understood by books the number of the years, whereof the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the prophet, that he would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem.
  • Daniel is stating that he understood their captivity would be seventy years and then release would come.
  • There are two things to consider here about the last days:
  • 1. That Daniel recognized the Messiah would come soon.
  • 2.The Kenites, who had slipped in among the Jewish people, also believed Daniel was a prophet although they did not believe in the first Christ, Jesus the Christ, our Messiah, whom they crucified.
  • Jeremiah 25:11 And this whole land shall be a desolation, and an astonishment; and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years.
12 And it shall come to pass, when seventy years are accomplished, that I will punish the king of Babylon, and that nation, saith the Lord, for their iniquity, and the land of the Chaldeans, and will make it perpetual desolations.
13 And I will bring upon that land all my words which I have pronounced against it, even all that is written in this book, which Jeremiah hath prophesied against all the nations.
14 For many nations and great kings shall serve themselves of them also: and I will recompense them according to their deeds, and according to the works of their own hands.
  • 15 For thus saith the Lord God of Israel unto me; Take the wine cup of this fury at my hand, and cause all the nations, to whom I send thee, to drink it.
16 And they shall drink, and be moved, and be mad, because of the sword that I will send among them.
17 Then took I the cup at the Lord's hand, and made all the nations to drink, unto whom the Lord had sent me:
    18 To wit, Jerusalem, and the cities of Judah, and the kings thereof, and the princes thereof, to make them a desolation, an astonishment, an hissing, and a curse; as it is this day;
  • Jeremiah 29:9 For they prophesy falsely unto you in my name: I have not sent them, saith the Lord.
10 For thus saith the Lord, That after seventy years be accomplished at Babylon I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place.
11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.
12 Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.
13 And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.
14 And I will be found of you, saith the Lord: and I will turn away your captivity, and I will gather you from all the nations, and from all the places whither I have driven you, saith the Lord; and I will bring you again into the place whence I caused you to be carried away captive.
    15 Because ye have said, The Lord hath raised us up prophets in Babylon;
3 And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplication, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes:
  • Daniel's prayers concern true Israel accepting the true Messiah, born of Mary.
4 And I prayed unto the Lord my God, and made my confession, and said, O Lord, the great and dreadful God, keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him, and to them that keep his commandments;
  • Daniel prayed to the Lord, This is the kind of God You are, You have kept all of Your promises.
  • To them = the condition =  that love him, and to them that keep his commandments
5 We have sinned, and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even by departing from thy precepts and from thy judgments:
  • We are the ones that have disobeyed.
  • Notice Daniel associates himself with the people.
6 Neither have we hearkened unto thy servants the prophets, which spake in thy name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land.

7 O Lord, righteousness belongeth unto thee, but unto us confusion of faces, as at this day; to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and unto all Israel, that are near, and that are far off, through all the countries whither thou hast driven them, because of their trespass that they have trespassed against thee.
  • Why are we shame-faced? Because our people have not obeyed God's Law. They have broken away.
  • They do not even know who they are. They have become ignorant of their identity.
  • Notice Daniel points out the men of Judah, the inhabitants of Jerusalem and all Israel.
  • I mention this specifically as the whole prophecy concerns this particular geographical location.
  • He scattered the house of Israel, and they don't know who they are
  • The book: Abrahamic Covenant, (A study outline of the identity of God's people) By E. Raymond Capt
8 O Lord, to us belongeth confusion of face, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against thee.

9 To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgiveness's, though we have rebelled against him;

10 Neither have we obeyed the voice of the Lord our God, to walk in his laws, which he set before us by his servants the prophets.

11 Yea, all Israel have transgressed thy law, even by departing, that they might not obey thy voice; therefore the curse is poured upon us, and the oath that is written in the law of Moses the servant of God, because we have sinned against him.
  • He warned us = He told us = how to keep His Commandments and walk in His Ways
  • Leviticus 26:14  But if ye will not hearken unto me, and will not do all these commandments;
  • Deuteronomy 27:15 Cursed be the man that maketh any graven or molten image, an abomination unto the Lord, the work of the hands of the craftsman, and putteth it in a secret place. And all the people shall answer and say, Amen.
12 And he hath confirmed his words, which he spake against us, and against our judges that judged us, by bringing upon us a great evil: for under the whole heaven hath not been done as hath been done upon Jerusalem.
  • He gave us the law by His prophets = to His People =  and they have not obeyed My laws.
  • Zechariah 1:6 But my words and my statutes, which I commanded my servants the prophets, did they not take hold of your fathers? and they returned and said, Like as the Lord of hosts thought to do unto us, according to our ways, and according to our doings, so hath he dealt with us.
13 As it is written in the law of Moses, all this evil is come upon us: yet made we not our prayer before the Lord our God, that we might turn from our iniquities, and understand thy truth.
  • Deuteronomy 28:15 But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee:
  • Deuteronomy 28, The Curses
14 Therefore hath the Lord watched upon the evil, and brought it upon us: for the Lord our God is righteous in all his works which he doeth: for we obeyed not his voice.
  • If we broke His law = it's only fair that He would punished us
  • We might take note of that again today in regard to our own actions!
  • Jeremiah 31:28 And it shall come to pass, that like as I have watched over them, to pluck up, and to break down, and to throw down, and to destroy, and to afflict; so will I watch over them, to build, and to plant, saith the Lord.
  • Jeremiah 44:27 Behold, I will watch over them for evil, and not for good: and all the men of Judah that are in the land of Egypt shall be consumed by the sword and by the famine, until there be an end of them.
15 And now, O Lord our God, that hast brought thy people forth out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, and hast gotten thee renown, as at this day; we have sinned, we have done wickedly.
  • Daniel is saying in effect everyone has heard how You loved and protected us, and You are a fair God, but we have sinned.
  • Again and again they deserve punishment, and Daniel's prayer is for mercy.
16 O Lord, according to all thy righteousness, I beseech thee, let thine anger and thy fury be turned away from thy city Jerusalem, thy holy mountain: because for our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and thy people are become a reproach to all that are about us.
  • Through us, the name of Your people has become a reproach.
  • We deserve punishment, but please be merciful.
  • Note again, the stress on Jerusalem.
17 Now therefore, O our God, hear the prayer of thy servant, and his supplications, and cause thy face to shine upon thy sanctuary that is desolate, for the Lord's sake.
  • For Your own sake, whereby people will know that You are the living God.
18 O my God, incline thine ear, and hear; open thine eyes, and behold our desolations, and the city which is called by thy name: for we do not present our supplications before thee for our righteousness's, but for thy great mercies.
  • Thine eyes, which is called by thy name: or, upon which Thy name has been called, others were praying with Daniel.
19 O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive; O Lord, hearken and do; defer not, for thine own sake, O my God: for thy city and thy people are called by thy name.
  • For a moment let us look at this city of Jerusalem today.
  • The tribe of Judah loves the Lord
  • It's Satan's seed who do not accept Jesus Christ.
  • The good and bad are setup in Jerusalem, learn the parable of the fig tree..
  • Daniel's prayer to cleanse the sanctuary is one that we should give daily.
20 And whiles I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the Lord my God for the holy mountain of my God;

21 Yea, whiles I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation.
  • Note here it was Gabriel that appeared to him.
  • You would have to compare this to when Gabriel appeared to David or when he appeared to Elijah.
  • You would understand the magnitude of what you're about to hear, as Gabriel is that angel of all Israel.
22 And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee skill and understanding.
  • To give thee skill, and to teach thee understanding, or to make thee wise.
  • Note the special emphasis as to the admonition for ourselves in the scriptures below.
  • It is not a vision that requires interpretation, but a direct prophecy given in simple words by the angel Gabriel, sent by God for the express purpose of making everything clear, and solving the most weighty problems that perplex the human mind.
  • There is no "difficulty", as supposed.
  • All that is required of us is to understand, and consider and believe what is thus written for our learning.
23 At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to shew thee; for thou art greatly beloved: therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision.
  • Gabriel says at the moment, you started praying, I was given the authority to instruct you.
  • We also pray for understanding, so we may know the plan of God.
  • It is also said that Daniel was greatly loved, and let me tell you, God's elect today are also greatly loved.
  • It is not only your right to understand, but you are expected to understand.
24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.
  • In Leviticus 25, it is made clear that every seventh year is the Sabbath year, so the years in this matter are setup as seven weeks of years.
  • Leviticus 25:8 And thou shalt number seven Sabbaths of years unto thee, seven times seven years; and the space of the seven Sabbaths of years shall be unto thee forty and nine years.
  • This has two meanings.
  • 1. In 490 when Christ cames and dies for mankind to make an end of sin.
  • 2. The meaning in Hebrew indicates the last 490 years to the end of this world.
  • Christ died for our sins in 33 A.D., but historically an end of sins has not yet come to pass and so we understand the phrase "to bring in everlasting righteousness" to refer to Christ's second coming.
  • Seventy weeks = Seventy sevens of years.
  • Not on any "year-day" theory.
  • If "day" had been intended, it would be so expressed, as in Leviticus 25:8.
  • Moreover, "year" had been the subject of Daniel's prayer.
  • The last "seven" is "one", and it is divided in half in verse 27, and the half is three and a half years.
  • In Revelation 11:2 this half is expressed by "forty-two months"; and in the next verse as "1260 days".
  • The whole period is therefore 490 years.
  • Determined is cutoff, divided off from all other years. The verb is in the singular to indicate the unity of the whole period, however it may be divided ups.
  • Daniel's people, Israel, with which alone the prophecy is concerned, thy holy city, Jerusalem. Finish, put an end to.
  • To emphasise each of these six special announcements and their connection with the whole period.
  • Make an end of, as below (to seal up) make an end of by fulfilling all that been the subject of prophecy.
  • This answers to the cleansing of the sanctuary, which immediately precedes "the end".
  • Daniel 8:14 And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.
  • Thy People:  Daniel's People, Israel, with which alone the prophecy is concerned.
  • Thy holy city: Jerusalem
  • Finish = put an end to
  • Make an end of = as below ("to seal up")
  • Make reconciliation = make expiation or atonement.
  • Seal up, etc.. = make an end of by fulfilling all that has been the subject of prophecy.
  • Prophecy = prophet.
  • The most Holy = a Holy of Holies. Never used of a person. This answers to the cleansing of the sanctuary  which immediately precedes "the end".
  • Daniel 8:14 And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.
  • 2300 days then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.
  • "1260 days". The whole period is therefore 490 years.
  • Revelation 11:2 But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months.
  • Here is further proof that He dealing with Israel first
  • Forty two months = 3 1/2 years, Revelation 9 God shortened time to 5 months which is 150 days
  • Matthew 25:10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut.
  • There come a time when it will be too late
  • 11 Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us.
12 But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.
  • Revelation 11:3 And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.
  • My two witnesses, They shall prophesy what? The word of God
  • Type = Genesis 19:1 And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground;
  • The forty and two months is the same as three and one half years
  • And also two thousand, two hundred and sixty days
  • Same time in Revelation 12:6 - Satan's time 5 months, the time was shortened to 5 months
25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.
  • After 3 1/2 years, on grounds not stated, he breaks this covenant (or "league", 11:23), the daily sacrifice is "taken away", the "abomination" set up, and "Jacob's trouble" (Jeremiah 30:7) commences and continues for the remainder of the "seven": example, for the 1,260 days or 3 1/2 years. (Ap 91)
  • The king that was in power in 454 B.C. gave the order to rebuild, not the temple, but the city.
  • Nehemiah 2:1 And it came to pass in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that wine was before him: and I took up the wine, and gave it unto the king. Now I had not been beforetime sad in his presence.
  • The first seven weeks or forty-nine years will take you to 405 B.C. when the building was commenced.
  • So from then "unto the Prince" is sixty-two weeks or 434 years, which brings us to 29 A.D.
  • Notice that seven weeks plus sixty two weeks equals sixty-nine weeks, or one week shy of seventy weeks.
  • We have one more week to deal with after 29 A.D. and this will clear itself up as we continue in the prophecy.
  • Referring to the Divine word rather than to a royal decree.
  • Messiah means anointed, Only priests and kings were anointed, lepers and Elisha being the only exceptions.
  • 1 Kings 19:16 And Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel: and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy room.
  • Messiah the Prince, A Priest King,  a leader and ruler of the people. "Messiah (that is to say) the Prince of the people".
  • Therefore not Zerubbabel (who was a prince but not a priest); nor Ezra (who was a priest but not a prince); nor Cyrus (who was a king but not a priest), and he only as a type of Messiah, who was both.
  • Seven weeks = forty-nine years (454-405 B.C.).
  • Threescore and two weeks = 434 years (405 B.C. - 29 A.D.): the two together being 49 + 434 = 483 years; leaving seven years to make up the full 490 years of verse 24.
  • The street and the wall means, open place and close street: implying the completeness of the restoration; which included the places of resort and the thorough fares leading thereto, like our English "court and alley".
  • The street means the Broadway or open space by the gate or elsewhere.
  • The word wall in Hebrew, it cannot be wall, as we define it. It is more like a narrow trench.
  • You can take it in a sense that those who receive the true interpretation will be narrow or a very few, the knowledge being withheld from the whole world.
  • Trouble times: the times of Ezra and Nehemiah.
  • This covers the forty-nine years. We know this, not from history profane or Divine, but from the statement here.
26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.
  • It didn't say that at the end of threescore and two weeks (62), the Messiah would be cut off, but after sixty-two weeks.
  • Cut Off in Hebrew as it is used here, means a violent or traumatic death and of course He was crucified.
  • A thought here: A week is seven days longs: in this case seven years long.
  • The people = The Roman people
  • Halfway through 7 years is 3 1/2 years and 3 1/2 years after 29, He was crucified.
  • John 1:10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
  • This is simply history, and there is really no mystery.
  • But the astounding thing that establishes the infallibility of the prophecy is that it happened exactly as Daniel foretold that it would.
  • I point this out because we can rest assured the second meaning of the prophecy will come to pass.
  • The prince that shall come, this is (the little horn..Satan), the prince that shall destroy the city.
  • Matthew 21:41 They say unto him, He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and will let out his vineyard unto other husbandmen, which shall render him the fruits in their seasons.
  • Matthew 22:7 But when the king heard thereof, he was wroth: and he sent forth his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city.
  • The end thereof shall be with a flood..of lies.
  • Did you ever notice that out of God's comes fires, a cleansing fire, and out of Satan's mouth always water?
  • Out of Satan's mouth of course comes a flood of lies, and this is the only thing anyone has to fear ....deception.
  • Revelation 12:15 And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood.
16 And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon (Satan) cast out of his mouth.
  • His power is in his mouth, which is confusion..deception.
  • Matthew 24:37 But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
  • 38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark,
  • 39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.
  • Understand this is that week we had left, It is Christ's last week and in the middle of it he was crucified.
  • Consider for a moment what Christ did while He was on this earth.
  • He confirmed the covenant. He taught: he chose twelve apostles; He performed miracles; He brought salvation to All.
  • All those that accept Him as the Son of God.
  • But there are people in the world who do not accept Christ, so understand this; the first 490 years were to our people, because He is our Messiah, but the last 490 years that are predicted here in a hidden sense, they are to Satan and his people that follow him.
  • Satan is their prince, the false christ, who shall appear and imitate or take on the role of Christ, all peoples of this earth that didn't study God's word will worship Satan (the false christ).
  • They will rush to him, kneel to him, Satan comes in peaceful.
  • Why? Because they have not studied God's word.
  • Hosea 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.
  • Mark 13, God's elect will stand against Satan again, and they will be delivered up to Satan for a witness, so the gospel can be published to the whole world. God will speak through you.
  • Matthew 24, Mark 13 and Luke 21 Signs of the end of the world.
  • Matthew 24:15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)
  • For the overspreading of a battle of: (instead of means, in its stead (shall be) in place of the daily sacrifice.
  • Abomination he shall make it desolate, this is in the last days.
  • Our Lord tells us where he (Satan) will stand "The Holy Place" in the temple at Jerusalem, saying he is God.
  • Many believe Satan will appear in the temple in Jerusalem, Dome of the Rock.
  • Deut 32 = the two rocks = the temple in Jerusalem
  • Don't be deceived, Many false teachers, False preachers use religion to deceived men.
  • 2 Thessalonians 2:2 That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.
    3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.
2 Thessalonians 2:9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders.
  • 6th seal, Satan The false Christ appears to be Christ by imitating the Messiah, Don't be deceived.
  • Mark 13:19 For in those days shall be affliction, such as was not from the beginning of the creation which God created unto this time, neither shall be.
20 And except that the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh should be saved: but for the elect's sake, whom he hath chosen, he hath shortened the days.
21 And then if any man shall say to you, Lo, here is Christ; or, lo, he is there; believe him not:
22 For false Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall shew signs and wonders, to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect.
23 But take ye heed: behold, I have foretold you all things.
  • Revelation 9:4 And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads.
  • We know now that these are not locusts, because God told them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree, and this is what locusts eat.
  • Verse 7... their faces were as men
  • God said touch not the people with the seal of God in there forehead.
  • What was spoken of on Pentecost Day?
  • Acts 2:16 This is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel.
  • Joel talks about the four stages of the locusts.
  • Joel 2:25 And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpiller, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you.
26 And ye shall eat in plenty, and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord your God, that hath dealt wondrously with you: and my people shall never be ashamed.
27 And ye shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I am the Lord your God, and none else: and my people shall never be ashamed.
28 And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:
29 And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.
30 And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. (divined judgment)
31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the Lord come.
32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the Lord hath said, and in the remnant whom the Lord shall call.
  • These creatures are to torment men,  We can assume from this that these are not locusts.
  • Where as the literal locust is a torment to vegetation
  • They were given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.
  • Them = the servants of Satan
  • The scorpion, by the way, has a venomous sting and so we see a correlation between them and the wicked beast system.
  • The seal of God in the forehead is simply that your mind is impregnated with the truth of Jesus Christ, or to put it in other words, knowing His full truth and doing His work.
  • It is exactly the opposite of the mark of the beast.. the work of your hands
  • Thus, inasmuch as God told them not to hurt the trees or the men with the seal of God, you know that this is not talking about locusts but is talking about false prophets.
  • And the balance of the chapter bears out this view.
  • If you do not have the seal of God in your forehead, you will be tormented five months.
  • Revelation 9:5 And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man.
  • The false prophets are not allowed to killed, but to torment
