God uses everyday things throughout the Bible as symbols or as examples so that people can understand and relate to. This chapter is example how Satan can deceived you.

If God words tell us to do something, don't let Satan and his children deceive you with their lies. This is why you need to know the word and search out what's right or wrong. This chapter is about how Satan's works, with lies to deceive you, by trickery.

Verses to remember:

  • Mark 13:5 And Jesus answering them began to say, Take heed lest any man deceive you:
  • Mark 13:22 For false christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall shew signs and wonders, to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect.
  • Isaiah 61:3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.
  • What's the mark? 2 Corinthians 11:3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.
  • Do not be deceived as Eve, by the serpent.
  • The serpent wholly seduce her by deceiving her, through his  trickery or sophistry.
  • Just as Satan will say, I will pay all your bills, give you anything, if you will worship me.
  • 2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
  • Matthew 4:1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
  • Be wiser than the serpent, for Satan's seed are working overtime at this time.
  • Matthew 13:39 The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels.
Genesis 3:1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
  • The truth shall make you free, God uses nature itself to relate something to you because you can identify with the things you can see.
  • The serpent = Revelation 20:1 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.
  • 2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,
3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.
  • Serpent. = Hebrew word  Nachash, = a shining one
  • The serpent was more subtil than any beast: "Any beast of the field'' any living creatures or begin the field which God had made, and knowing evil, and not ashamed.
  • Subtil = wise = in a good sense as well as in a bad sense.
  • Ezekiel 28:12 we have the good sense, "Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom"; and the bad sense "thou hast corrupted thy wisdom" (referring, of course, to his fall).
  • So the word rendered "subtle" is rendered "prudent"; and in a bad sense
  • Ezekiel 28:13-17 Serpent = connected with "cherub" and contrasted with it here in verse 24.
  • The old serpent 2 Corinthians 11:3 transformed as "an angel of light"  = a glorious angel
  • Genesis 2:17 They were not ashamed "before God".
  • He's not speaking to a snake, this is Satan in his role as the serpent.
  • In Hebrew, it's translate the upright one, the shining one.
  • Genesis 2:25 "They were both naked, the man and his wife, and knowing only good.
  • How many times have you heard Christ say, you generation of vipers, when he was talking to the children of Satan?
  • Matthew 23:33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?
34 Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:
  • Tree = Hebrew word OT:6095 =  a primitive root; properly, to fasten (or make firm), to close (the eyes):
  • The spine (as giving firmness to the body) backbone.
2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:
  • God's first commandment
  • Genesis 2:16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:
17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
  • She's talking to Satan, not a snake.
  • May eat = freely
  • End times = The Seal of God in your forehead = The truth of God's word in your forehead vs the mark of beast (Satan, false deception) in your forehead the deception of false teaching and the tradition of man in your forehead.
  • Colossians 2:8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
  • 2 Corinthians 11:3  But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent (Satan) beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.
4 For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.
The seal of God in your forehead = Simply by removing the deception of false teaching and tradition of men and placing the Word of God in your forehead.
3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
  • Therefore, let us consider God's plan here.
  • Shall ye touch = to lie with a woman
  • Consider, and it is the word "touch". God's command to Eve was; "neither shall ye touch it.
  • The Hebrew word for "touch" is # H5060 in the Strong's dictionary is (Naga, a prime root. to touch, lay the hand upon (for the purpose; to lie with a woman), to reach), So we see that the warning to Adam and Eve specifically, was to stay away from Satan called both the "serpent", and the "tree of good and evil".
  • The fruit of that tree was not to be taken; and we know that the "fruit" as the results of a sexual relationship between any man and woman is a child.
  • God's command was that Eve not touch (lay with Satan)
  • So, we see that the order by God is that Eve not have sexual union with Satan.
  • Lest ye die = surely
  • Now Eve was told she was not to touch this tree, which is Satan.
  • Now we speak of the trunk of our body means the torso and our limbs are arms, and our backbone or trunk is the center of the nervous system which feeds knowledge to the brain.
  • Know that the tree of the knowledge of good and evil is Satan, old Lucifer himself.
  • Matthew 7:17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.
21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
  • So we see that the warning to Adam and Eve specifically, was to stay away from Satan called both the "serpent", and the "tree of good and evil".
  • The fruit of that tree was not to be taken; and we know that the "fruit" as the results of a sexual relationship between any man and woman is a child.
  • God's command was that Eve "not touch (lay with Satan)."
  • So, we see that the order by God is that Eve not have sexual union with Satan.
4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
  • 1st lie =  Satan is the father of all lies, so you must always inspect his words very carefully to determine whether it is truth or false.
  • John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
  • Ye shall not surely die = Satan's second utterance. Contradiction of God's Word in Genesis 2:17.
  • This has become the foundation of Spiritism and tradition belief as to death.
  • Here marked by the word "surely" as in by the word "freely"
  • God's Word is always true.
  • God has told us many times, do not listen to anyone that turns you away from the truth.
  • Do not believe what any man may teach you, unless you first check them out directly from God's Word, which is unchangeable.
  • We know God has given us free will to follow Him or Satan.
  • It's up to you to study God's word.
  • This is why we're living in this world today, because some follow Satan
  • God needs to know, if you love Him.
5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
  • Ye shall be as gods = be as God, This is the foundation of Satan's second lie.
  • The immanence of God is man.
  • In Hebrew: "In the day ye eat thereof " now what is she to eat or partake of but the tree, in verse 3.
  • This "tree" in Hebrew is # 6086 means to shut the eyes. Notice: shut, and not open.
  • "Atseh", # 6096 means backbone.
  • So you see clearly that we are talking about a body or a person here and not a tree.
  • The Hebrew "atsah" means to shut the eyes.
  • Satan has said in this verse that God knows your eyes will be opened when you partake of this.
  • Keep in mind always, that Satan is deceit personified.
  • He is the father of all lies, so you must always inspect his words very carefully to determine whether it is truth or false.
  • Eve's eyes would be opened, and yet the original Hebrew indicates shut.
  • So this opening of the eyes is another subtlety of Satan's.
  • Those eye's would in fact be opened to sin and shut to the truth.
  • Isaiah 61:3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.
  • Proverbs 13:1 A wise son heareth his father's instruction: but a scorner heareth not rebuke.
  • Instruction = correction, or discipline
  • 2 A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth: but the soul of the transgressors shall eat violence.
  • Eat here means what you do, your works, and how you believe. To do good or evil.
  • 3 He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.
  • Eat here means what you do, your works, and how you believe. To do good or evil. The good and bad figs. Jeremiah 24:1 The Lord shewed me, and, behold, two baskets of figs were set before the temple of the Lord, after that Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon had carried away captive Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah, and the princes of Judah, with the carpenters and smiths, from Jerusalem, and had brought them to Babylon.
2 One basket had very good figs, even like the figs that are first ripe: and the other basket had very naughty figs, which could not be eaten, they were so bad.
  • Matthew 24:32 Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh: (Matthew13)
  • Matthew 13:38 The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one;
39 The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels.
6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
  • Good for food and pleasant to the eyes = Lust of the flesh = Lust of the eyes
  • Luke 6:43  For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
  • Food = a=burn up, consume, devourer,  freely, wise deed, plenty, lay
  • 1 John 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
  • Did eat = Here marked by the word "surely" as in by the word "freely"
  • We know the tree of good and evil is (Satan).
  • Matthew 13:39 The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels.
  • She took of the fruit thereof, and did eat = to lie with
  • Her husband with her; and he did eat = to lie with
  • Satan tempted Jesus = Matthew 4:3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
  • With her = Therefore Adam present
  • So the second tree (person) would be (Adam her husband).
  • She gave = she freely done this
  • Verse 3 "Shall ye touch" in Hebrew means "to lie with a woman"
  • This "tree" in Hebrew is # 6086 it's comes from the prime root, "atsah", 6095 means to shut the eyes. Notice: shut, and not open.
  • "Atseh", # 6096 also comes from the prime root, "atsah", means backbone.
  • So you see clearly that we are talking about a body or a person here and not a tree.
  • She partook of that tree even though God had specifically said not to.
  • Eve's eyes would be opened, and yet the original Hebrew indicates shut.
  • So this opening of the eyes is another subtlety of Satan's.
  • Those eye's would in fact be opened to sin and shut to the truth
  • Knew = Figure of speech = They knew before, but their knowledge now received a new meaning. Adam becomes "naked" by losing something of Elohim's glorious likeness
  • The serpent wholly seduce her by deceiving her, through his trickery or sophistry.
  • Beguiled: to seduce wholly, deceive, of uncertain derivation; to cheat
  • Subtilty:  trickery or sophistry
  • In 2 Corinthians 11, Paul makes it very clear what happen in the garden
  • 2 Corinthians 11:1 Would to God ye could bear with me a little in my folly: and indeed bear with me.
  • Folly = Mark 7:22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:
23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.
  • 2 Corinthians 11:2 For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.
  • 2 Corinthians 11:3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.
  • Matthew 13:39 The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels.
  • (Revelation 8 and 16) The book of Joel) Satan's seed
  • Matthew 4:3 And when the tempter came to him (Jesus), he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
  • 4 But he (Jesus) answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
  • 5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,
  • Pleasant to the eyes = "Lust of the eyes"
  • 1 John 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
  • Make one wise = "Boastful of life".
  • Mathew 4:8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;
  • John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
  • Fig leaves = The man-made covering contrasted, in the structure, with the God-made clothing
  • Note "aprons" that normally cover the loins, and not the face masks to cover a mouth which ate of  fruit of a literal tree.
  • They made aprons to cover their private parts.
  • They didn't make a mask to cover their mouth.
  • Knew = They knew before, but their knowledge now received a new meaning.
  • Jeremiah 24:2 One basket had very good figs, even like the figs that are first ripe: and the other basket had very naughty figs, which could not be eaten, they were so bad.
8 And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.
  • Voice = here footsteps
  • Hid themselves = No "quest for God" in fallen man.
  • Genesis 4:14 Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me.
9 And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?
  • Where art thou? Comes from God to the sinner. Compare =  of the seeking sinner, "Where is He?
10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.
  • Their eyes were opened as Satan had promised, but it wasn't to be as gods, but knowing good and evil.
  • Their eyes were opened to the fact that they were naked.
11 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?

12 And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.
  • Adam blame God = for giving him the woman
  • The man = the man Adam
  • The woman = Characteristic of fallen man
  • Thou gavest = implying blame to God as well to his wife
  • As Christians, we should be responsible for our own actions.
  • The Lord is certainly going to hold us responsible and accountable for our actions.
13 And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.
  • The word "beguiled" in Greek means "Wholly seduced", there is no doubt about what had happened in the garden with Satan.
  • 2 Corinthians 11:2 For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.
3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.
4 For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.
  • Adam and Eve only knew good.
  • Subtilty means (in a bad sense) trickery or sophistry
  • The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat = to lie with
14 And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:
  • On thy belly shalt thou go". This Figure means infinitely more than the literal belly of flesh and blood; just as the words "heel" and "head" do in verse 15.
  • It paints for the eyes of our mind the picture of Satan's ultimate humiliation; for prostration was ever the most eloquent sign of subjection.
  • When it is said "our belly cleaveth unto the ground" (Ps 44:25), it denotes such a prolonged prostration and such a depth of submission as could never be conveyed or expressed in literal words.
  • Ps 44:25 For our soul is bowed down to the dust: our belly cleaveth unto the earth.
26 Arise for our help, and redeem us for thy mercies' sake.
  • So with the other prophecy, "Dust shalt thou eat". This is not true to the letter, or to fact, but it is all the more true to truth.
  • It tells of constant, continuous disappointment, failure, and mortification; as when deceitful ways are spoken of as feeding on deceitful food, which is "sweet to a man, but afterward his mouth shall be filled with gravel" (Proverbs 20:17).
  • This does not mean literal "gravel", but something far more disagreeable.
  • It means disappointment so great that it would gladly be exchanged for the literal "gravel".
  • So when Christians are rebuked for "biting and devouring one another" (Gal 3:14,15), something more heart-breaking is meant than the literal words used in the Figure.
  • Dust = Figure of speech of utter defeat, as in Ps 72:9
  • Ps 72:9 They that dwell in the wilderness shall bow before him; and his enemies shall lick the dust.
  • When "His enemies shall lick the dust" (Ps 72:9) they will not do it on their knees with their literal tongues; but they will be so prostrated and so utterly defeated, that no words could literally depict their overthrow and subjugation.
  • If a serpent was afterward called a nachash, it was because it was more shining than any other creature; and if it became known as "wise", it was not because of its own innate positive knowledge, but of its wisdom in hiding away from all observation; and because of its association with one of the names of Satan (that old serpent) who "beguiled Eve" (2 Cor 11:3,14).
  • Said = God asks the serpent no question.
  • God was furious with Satan and said he was cursed above every animal, every living creature, everything or that he was lower than low, if possible.
  • Upon thy belly =  Figure of speech. The words imply the utmost humiliation, as in Ps 44:25.
  • Psalms 44:25 For our soul is bowed down to the dust: our belly cleaveth unto the earth.
  • It is wonderful how a snake could ever be supposed to speak without the organs of speech, or that Satan should be supposed able to accomplish so great a miracle.
  • It only shows the power of tradition, which has, from the infancy of each one of us, put before our eyes and written on our minds the picture of a "snake" and an "apple": the former being based on a wrong interpretation, and the latter being a pure invention, about which there is not one word said in Holy Scripture.
  • Never was Satan's wisdom so craftily used as when he secured universal acceptance of this traditional belief: for it has succeeded in fixing the attention of mankind on the letter and the means, and thus blinding the eyes to the solemn fact that the Fall of man had to do solely with the Word of God, and is centered in the sin of believing Satan's lie instead of God's truth.
  • The temptation of "the first man Adam" began with the question "Hath God said?" The temptation of "the second man, the Lord from heaven" began with the similar question "If thou be the Son of God", when the voice of the Father had scarcely died away, which said "This IS My beloved Son".
  • All turned on the truth of what God had said.
  • The Word of God being questioned, led Eve, in her reply
  • (1) to omit the word "freely" (3:2, cp. 2:16); then
  • (2) to add the words "neither shalt thou touch it" (3:3, cp. 2:17); and finally
  • (3) to alter a certainty into a contingency by changing "thou SHALT SURELY die" (2:17) into "LEST ye die" (3:3).
15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
  • This is only for the same purpose of emphasizing the truth and the reality of what is said.
  • When it is said, "thou shalt bruise His heel", it cannot mean His literal heal of flesh and blood, but suffering, more temporary in character.
  • The Lord was talking to Satan saying, I will put enmity between thee and the woman, between thy seed and her seed.
  • The woman, Adam & Eve seed, Abel and thy seed, Eve & Satan's seed, Cain
  • It shall bruise thy head, Satan head and thou shalt bruise his heel, Jesus heel.
  • The bruising of Christ's heel, Satan's seed would eventually bruise the heel of Christ on the cross. When Satan's seed killed Jesus on the cross.
  • Matthew 27:1 When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death:
  • These say they are Jews but are the synagogue of Satan.
  • The church of Pergamos God was not pleased with this church, Why?
Revelation 2:12-13 We see then, that this is an evil place, where Satan exercises his power and authority. Thou dwellest, even where Satan's seat.
Revelation 2:14 I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumbling block before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication.
  • Satan knew that it was through Eve, the woman's bloodline that Christ would eventually be born.
  • This was Satan's first attempt in the flesh age, to destroy God's plan.
  • Satan was trying to keep Eve's seed line from being brought forth, and so he deceived Eve where his own seed would be born.
  • This is only for the same purpose of emphasizing the truth and the reality of what is said.
  • When it is said, "thou shalt bruise His heel", it cannot mean His literal heal of flesh and blood, but suffering, more temporary in character.
  • "He shall crush thy head, Satan's head", it means something more than a skull of bone, and brain, and hair. It means that all Satan's plans and plots, policy and purposes, will one day be finally crushed and ended, when God's very elect are deliver up.
  • Christ will crush Satan's head when God's very elect are deliver up and God will speak through His Very Elect and bring the 144,000 out of confession and most of the world.
  • John 5:25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead (spiritually dead to God's word) shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.
  • Matthew 10:19 But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak.
20 For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.
  • Type of Pentecost Day, Act 2
  • Matthew 27:17 Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ?
18 For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.
19 When he was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him.
20 But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus.
  • Revelation 2:9 I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.
  • Crush the head of the old serpent, the Devil is when God's very elect are deliver up and God will speak through them.
  • The elect (from all races) are those who took a firm stand against Satan in the first world age that was. In the last days there will be 7,000 out of that remnant that the Father chose as His very elect to stand against Satan again. They will prove their right of being God's elect by standing against Satan again, being delivered up and being a witness for Christ's sake.(Rev 7) (Rev 15)
  • God very elect will be deliver up and Satan's one world government will be crushed
  • The bruising of Christ's heel it was through the death of Christ that he who had the power of death would be destroyed; and all Satan's power and policy brought to an end, and all his works destroyed
  • The one great central truth of all prophecy the coming of the One, Who, though He should suffer, should in the end crush the head of the old serpent, the Devil.
  • But, where are we to open this book? Where are we to break into this circle of the Zodiacal signs?
  • Through the "precession of the Equinoxes" the sun gradually shifts its position a little each year, till in about every 2,000 years it begins the year in a different sign.
  • Head ..heel = They denote the temporary sufferings of the Seed, and the complete destruction of Satan and his works.
  • "Seed " means child
  • This is the first great promise and prophecy. Note its position in the centre of Structure above.
  • Satan stands ready to Devour the promise "seed"
  • This enmity between the serpent's seed and Eve's would bruise his head, how else to destroy a serpent, which, as we have learned, becomes a powerful and false political system?

  • Where did this evil come from?
  • Certainly not Adam.
  • He got it from Satan.
  • You'll remember Cain was sent to tend the fields, or in simple words to be a farmers, and Abel, his brother, who was the issue of Eve and Adam, was to tend the sheep, or be a shepherd.

  • A flaming sword = Revelation 1:16 And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp two edged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.

The history of Genesis 3 is intended to teach us the fact that Satan's sphere of activities is in the religious sphere, and not the spheres of crime and immorality; that his battlefield is not the sins arising from human depravity, but the unbelief of the human heart.

We are not to look for Satan's activities to-day in the newspaper press, or the police courts; but in the pulpit, and in professors' chairs.

Whenever the Word of God is called in question, there we see the trail of "that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan". (Rev 12)

This is why anything against the true interests of the Word of God (as being such) finds a ready admission into the newspapers of the world, and is treated as "general literature".

This is why anything in favor of its inspiration and Divine origin and its spiritual truth is rigidly excluded as being "controversial".

This is why Satan is quite content that the letter of Scripture should be accepted in Gen 3, as he himself accepted the letter of Ps 91:11.

He himself could say "It is written" (Matt 4:6) so long as the letter of what is "written" could be put instead of the truth that is conveyed by it; and so long as it is misquoted or misapplied.

This is his object in perpetuating the traditions of the "snake" and the "apple", because it ministers to the acceptance of his lie, the hiding of God's truth, the support of tradition, the jeers of the infidel, the opposition of the critics, and the stumbling of the weak in faith.

1. Ezek 28:11-19, who is quite a different being from "the Prince of Tyre", who is purely human.

There is more about "the king of Tyre" in Ezek 28:11-19 than was literally true of "the prince of Tyre".

The words can be understood only of the mightiest and most exalted supernatural being that God ever created; and this for the purpose of showing how great would be his fall.

The history must be true to make the prophecy of any weight.

2. It is remarkable that the verb nachash always means to enchant, fascinate, bewitch; or of one having and using occult knowledge.

See Gen 30:27; 44:5,15. Lev 19:26. Deut 18:10. 1 Kings 20:33. 2 Kings 17:17; 21:6. 2 Chron 33:6. So also is the noun used in Num 23:23; 24:1.

3. Greater than that wrought by God Himself, who opened the mouth of Balaam's ass.

When Satan is spoken of as a "serpent", it is the figure Hypocatastasis or Implication; it no more means snake than it does when Dan is so called in Gen 49:17; or when Herod is called a "fox" (Luke 13:32); or when Judah is called "a lion's whelp".

It is the same figure when "doctrine" is called "leaven" (Matt 16:6).

It shows that something much more real and truer to truth is impressively; and is intended to be a figure of something much more real than the letter of the word.

It is wonderful how a snake could ever be supposed to speak without the organs of speech, or that Satan should be supposed able to accomplish so great a miracle.

It only shows the power of tradition, which has, from the infancy of each one of us, put before our eyes and written on our minds the picture of a "snake" and an "apple": the former being based on a wrong interpretation, and the latter being a pure invention, about which there is not one word said in Holy Scripture.

Summary In Genesis 3 we have neither allegory, myth, legend, nor fable, but literal historical facts set forth, and emphasized by the use of certain Figures of speech.

All the confusion of thought and conflicting exegesis have arisen from taking literally what is expressed by Figures, or from taking figuratively what is literal.

A Figure of speech is never used except for the purpose of calling attention to, emphasizing, and intensifying, the reality of the literal sense, and the truth of the historical facts; so that, while the words employed may not be so strictly true to the letter, they are all the more true to the truth conveyed by them, and to the historical events connected with them.

But for the figurative language of verses 14 and 15 no one would have thought of referring the third chapter of Genesis to a snake: no more than he does when reading the third chapter from the end of (Revelation 20:2).

Indeed, the explanation added there, that the "old serpent" is the Devil and Satan, would immediately lead one to connect the word "old" with the earlier and former mention of the serpent in Gen 3: and the fact that it was Satan himself who tempted "the second man", "the last Adam", would force conclusion that no other than the personal Satan could have been the tempter of "the first man, Adam".

The Hebrew word rendered "serpent" in Gen 3:1 is Nachash (from the root Nachash, to shine), and means a shining one.

Hence, in Chaldee it means brass or copper, because of its shining. Hence also, the word Nehushtan, a piece of brass, in 2 Kings 18:4. In the same way Saraph, in Isa 6:2,6, means a burning one, and, because the serpents mentioned in Num 21 were burning, in the poison of their bite, they were called Saraphim, or Saraphs.

But with the LORD said unto Moses, "Make thee a fiery serpent" (Num 21:8), He said, "Make thee a Saraph", and, in obeying this command, we read in v. 9, "Moses made a Nachash of brass". Nachash is thus used as being interchangeable with Saraph.

Now, if Saraph is used of a serpent because its bite was burning, and is also used of a celestial or spirit-being (a burning one), why should not Nachash be used of a serpent because its appearance was shining, and be also used of a celestial or spirit-being (a shining one)?

Indeed, a reference to the structure of Gen 3 will show that the Cherubim (which are similar celestial or spirit-beings) of the last verse (Gen 3:24) require a similar spirit-being to correspond with them in the first verse (for the structure of the whole chapter is a great Introversion).

The Nachash, or serpent, who beguiled Eve (2 Cor 11:3) is not spoken of as "an angel of light" in v. 14.

Have we not, in this, a clear intimation that it was not a snake, but a glorious shining being, apparently as angel, to whom Eve paid such great deference, acknowledging him as one who seemed to possess superior knowledge, and who was evidently a being of a superior (not of an inferior) order?

Moreover, in the description of Satan as "the king of Tyre" (*1) it is distinctly implied that the latter being was of a supernatural order when he is called "a cherub" (Ezek 28:14,16, read from vv. 11-19).

His presence "in Eden, the garden of 'Elohim" (v. 13), is also clearly stated, as well as his being "perfect in beauty" (v. 12), his being "perfect in his ways from the day he was created till iniquity was found in him" (v. 15), and as being "lifted up because of his beauty" (v. 17).

These all compel the belief that Satan was the shining one (Nachash) in Gen 3, and especially because the following 1000 words could be addressed to him :

"Thing heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee" (v. 17).

Even supposing that these things were spoken to, and of, an exalted human being in later days (in Ezek 28), still "the king of Tyre" is not compared to a being who was nonexistent; and facts and circumstances which never happened are not introduced into the comparison.

There is more about "the king of Tyre" in Ezek 28:11-19 than was literally true of "the prince of Tyre" (vv. 1-10).

The words can be understood only of the mightiest and most exalted supernatural being that God ever created; and this for the purpose of showing how great would be his fall.

The history must be true to make the prophecy of any weight.
