Joshua 5:1 And it came to pass, when all the kings of the Amorites,
which were on the side of Jordan westward, and all the kings of the
Canaanites, which were by the sea, heard that the Lord had dried up the
waters of Jordan from before the children of Israel, until we were
passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them
any more, because of the children of Israel.
2 At that time the Lord said unto Joshua, Make thee sharp knives, and
circumcise again the children of Israel the second time.
-
Again... the second time, not repeated as act on
the person, but on the nation on a second
occasion, implying that the rite was performed
in Egypt. Verses 4-7.
-
Isaiah 11:11 And it shall come to pass in that
day, that the Lord shall set his hand again the
second time to recover the remnant of his
people, which shall be left, from Assyria, and
from Egypt, and from Pathros, and from Cush, and
from Elam, and from Shinar, and from Hamath, and
from the islands of the sea.
-
Jude 1:5 I will therefore put you in
remembrance, though ye once knew this, how that
the Lord, having saved the people out of the
land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that
believed not.
3 And Joshua made him sharp knives, and circumcised the children of
Israel at the hill of the foreskins.
4 And this is the cause why Joshua did circumcise: All the people that
came out of Egypt, that were males, even all the men of war, died in the
wilderness by the way, after they came out of Egypt.
-
Males, even all the men of war died in the
wilderness by the way, after they came out of
Egypt.
5 Now all the people that came out were circumcised: but
all the people
that were born in the wilderness by the way as they came forth out of
Egypt, them they had not circumcised.
6 For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till
all the people that were men of war, which came out of Egypt, were
consumed, because they obeyed not the voice of the Lord: unto whom the
Lord sware that he would not shew them the land, which the Lord sware
unto their fathers that he would give us, a land that floweth with milk
and honey.
-
Israel walked forty years in the wilderness,
till all the people that were men of war, which
came out of Egypt, were consumed,
-
People = nation or generation
-
Because they hearken not, unto the voice of the
Lord
-
The Lord sware that he would not shew them the
land
-
Which the Lord sware unto their fathers that he
would give us, a land that floweth with milk and
honey.
7 And their children, whom he raised up in their stead, them Joshua
circumcised: for they were uncircumcised, because they had not
circumcised them by the way.
8 And it came to pass, when they had done circumcising all the people,
that they abode in their places in the camp, till they were whole.
9 And the Lord said unto Joshua, This day have I rolled away the
reproach of Egypt from off you. Wherefore the name of the place is
called Gilgal unto this day.
-
This day have I rolled away the reproach of
Egypt from off you.
-
Wherefore the name of the place is called Gilgal
unto this day.
-
Gilgal means a wheel, rolling. The site of the
first camp of the Israelites on the west of the
Jordan, the place at which they passed the first
night after crossing the river, and where the
twelve stones were set up which had been taken
from the bed of the stream
10 And the children of Israel encamped in Gilgal, and kept the Passover
on the fourteenth day of the month at even in the plains of Jericho.
11 And they did eat of the old corn of the land on the morrow after the
Passover, unleavened cakes, and parched corn in the selfsame day.
-
Exodus 12:41 And it came to pass at the end of
the four hundred and thirty years, even the
selfsame day it came to pass, that all the hosts
of the Lord went out from the land of Egypt.
42 It is a night to be much observed unto the
Lord for bringing them out from the land of
Egypt: this is that night of the Lord to be
observed of all the children of Israel in their
generations.
-
Feast of unleavened bread ended 21st Abib at
even, exactly forty years from Exodus 12:41
12 And the manna ceased on the morrow after they had eaten of the old
corn of the land; neither had the children of Israel manna any more; but
they did eat of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.
13 And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up
his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him
with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said
unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries?
14 And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the Lord am I now
come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and
said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant?
-
Captain or Prince
-
Host = Israel as God's host
-
Exodus 12:41 And it came to pass at the end of
the four hundred and thirty years, even the
selfsame day it came to pass, that all the hosts
of the Lord went out from the land of Egypt.
15 And the captain of the Lord's host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe
from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And
Joshua did so.

The origin of a solemn Eastern custom of
reverence observed to this day.
-
Exodus 13:4 This day came ye out in the
month Abib.
5 And it shall be when the Lord shall bring thee
into the land of the Canaanites, and the
Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Hivites, and
the Jebusites, which he sware unto thy fathers
to give thee, a land flowing with milk and
honey, that thou shalt keep this service in this
month.
6 Seven days thou shalt eat unleavened bread,
and in the seventh day shall be a feast to the
Lord.
7 Unleavened bread shall be eaten seven days;
and there shall no leavened bread be seen with
thee, neither shall there be leaven seen with
thee in all thy quarters.
8 And thou shalt shew thy son in that day,
saying, This is done because of that which the
Lord did unto me when I came forth out of Egypt.
-
Exodus 3:5 And he said, Draw not nigh hither:
put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the
place whereon thou standest is holy ground.
6 Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father,
the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the
God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was
afraid to look upon God.
