1 Corinthians 10
1 Corinthians 10:1 Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant,
how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;
-
God parted the Red Sea for His people
-
Exodus 13:21 And the Lord went before them by
day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the
way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give
them light; to go by day and night:
22 He took not away the pillar of the cloud by
day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from
before the people.
-
Moreover = The texts read "for". It introduces
an instance of some who were rejected.
-
Would not = do not desire
-
Be ignorant = Romans 1:13 Now I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that often times I
purposed to come unto you, (but was let hitherto,) that I might have
some fruit among you also, even as among other Gentiles.
-
I have wanted to come there many times and I don't want you to be
ignorant concerning that, but I was taken else where as well.
-
All notice the emphatic repetition of "all" in
verses 1-4
2 And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;
-
1 Corinthians 9:9 For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the
ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen?
3 And did all eat the same spiritual meat;
-
Meat = Food = Manna fell from heaven, for them
to eat
-
Psalms 78:24 And had rained down manna upon them
to eat, and had given them of the corn of
heaven.
-
Spiritual = 1 Corinthians 12:1 Now
concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would
not have you ignorant.
4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual
Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.
-
Exodus 17:6 Behold, I will stand before thee
there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt
smite the rock, and there shall come water out
of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did
so in the sight of the elders of Israel.
-
Drink = Hebrews 9:10 Which stood only in meats
and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal
ordinances, imposed on them until the time of
reformation.
-
For = To the end of the verse is a parenthesis
-
Drank = were drinking that followed them.
-
There is no words for "them"
-
The meaning is, the miracle of the water
from the Rock followed that of manna from heaven
-
Christ = As the source of their supply, He is
called the Rock
-
Deuteronomy 32:4 He is
the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a
God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.
- God is our Rock = His work is perfect, His word is unchangeable
- God's Rock used five times in this chapter = five meaning = Grace
- Well pleased = 1 Corinthians 1:21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it
pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.
- Overthrown = Slain
- Numbers 14:16 Because the Lord was not able to bring this
people into the land which he sware unto them, therefore he hath
slain them in the wilderness.
- Job 12:23 He increaseth the nations, and destroyeth them: he
enlargeth the nations, and straiteneth them again.
5 But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in
the wilderness.
-
Numbers 14:11 And the Lord said unto
Moses, How long will this people provoke
me? and how long will it be ere they
believe me, for all the signs which I
have shewed among them?
12 I will smite them with the pestilence, and
disinherit them, and will make
of thee a greater nation and mightier than they.
13 And Moses said unto the Lord, Then the
Egyptians shall hear it, (for thou broughtest up
this people in thy might from among them;)
14 And they will tell it to the inhabitants of
this land: for they have heard that thou Lord
art among this people, that thou Lord art seen
face to face, and that
thy cloud standeth over them, and that
thou goest before them, by day time in a pillar
of a cloud, and in a pillar of fire by night.
15 Now if thou shalt kill all this people as one
man, then the nations which have heard the fame
of thee will speak, saying,
16 Because the Lord was not able to bring this
people into the land which he sware unto them,
therefore he hath slain them in the wilderness.
-
Numbers 26:64 But among these there was not a
man of them whom Moses and Aaron the priest
numbered, when they numbered the children of
Israel in the wilderness of Sinai.
65 For the Lord had said of them, They
shall surely die in the wilderness. And
there was not left a man of them, save
Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son
of Nun.
-
Jude 5 I will therefore put you in remembrance,
though ye once knew this, how that the Lord,
having saved the people out of the land
of Egypt, afterward destroyed
them that believed not.
6 Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after
evil things, as they also lusted.
-
1 Corinthians 10:11 Now all these things
happened unto them for ensamples: and they are
written for our admonition, upon whom the ends
of the world are come.
12 Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth
take heed lest he fall.
13 There hath no temptation taken you but such
as is common to man: but God is faithful, who
will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye
are able; but will with the temptation also make
a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
14 Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from
idolatry.
7 Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people
sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.
-
Exodus 32:6 And they rose up early on the
morrow, and offered burnt offerings, and brought
peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat
and to drink, and rose up to play.
7 And the Lord said unto Moses, Go, get thee
down; for thy people, which thou broughtest out
of the land of Egypt, have corrupted
themselves:
8 They have turned aside quickly out of the way
which I commanded them: they have made them a
molten calf, and have
worshipped it, and have sacrificed
thereunto, and said, These be thy gods, O
Israel, which have brought thee up out of the
land of Egypt.
9 And the Lord said unto Moses, I have seen this
people, and, behold, it is a stiff necked
people.
-
1 Corinthians 10:20 But I say, that the things
which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to
devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye
should have fellowship with devils.
21 Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the
cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the
Lord's table, and of the table of devils.
22 Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we
stronger than he?
8 Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one
day three and twenty thousand.
-
Three and twenty thousands = where the number is
given as 24,000, but this included the princes
of the people of verse 4.
-
Numbers 25:1 And Israel abode in Shittim, and
the people began to commit whoredom with the
daughters of Moab.
2 And they called the people unto the sacrifices
of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed
down to their gods.
3 And Israel joined himself unto Baal-peor: and
the anger of the Lord was kindled against
Israel.
4 And the Lord said unto Moses, Take all the
heads of the people, and hang them up before the
Lord against the sun, that the fierce anger of
the Lord may be turned away from Israel.
-
Revelation 2:14 But I have a few things against
thee, because thou hast there them that hold the
doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a
stumbling block before the children of Israel,
to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to
commit fornication.
9 Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed
of serpents.
-
Tempt = put thoroughly to the test
-
Matthews 4:7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt
the Lord thy God.
-
What happen when the children of Israel tempted
God 10 times?
-
They died in the wilderness, they didn't enter
the promised land.
-
Numbers 14:22 Because all those men which have seen my glory, and my miracles,
which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tempted me now
these ten times, and have not hearkened to my voice;

-
Exodus 32 - At Horeb (golden calf)
-
Numbers 11:1 - At Taberah
-
Numbers 11:1 - At Kibroth Hattaavah
-
Numbers 14:2 - Here, At Kadesh
-
Numbers 21:6 And the Lord sent fiery serpents
among the people, and they bit the people; and
much people of Israel died.
7 Therefore the people came to Moses, and said,
We have sinned, for we have spoken against the
Lord, and against thee; pray unto the Lord, that
he take away the serpents from us. And Moses
prayed for the people.
8 And the Lord said unto Moses, Make thee a
fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it
shall come to pass, that every one that is
bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.
9 And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it
upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a
serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the
serpent of brass, he lived.
10 Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the
destroyer.
-
Destroyer = only here = of the destroying angel,
and also in Exodus 12:23 and other places.
-
Exodus 12:23 For the Lord will pass through to
smite the Egyptians; and when he seeth the blood
upon the lintel, and on the two side posts, the
Lord will pass over the door, and will not
suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses
to smite you.
-
Exodus 15:24 And the people murmured against
Moses, saying, What shall we drink?
25 And he cried unto the Lord; and the Lord
shewed him a tree, which when he had cast into
the waters, the waters were made sweet: there he
made for them a statute and an ordinance, and
there he proved them,
26 And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to
the voice of the Lord thy God, and wilt do that
which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear
to his commandments, and keep all his statutes,
I will put none of these diseases upon thee,
which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I
am the Lord that healeth thee.
-
Exodus 16:2 And the whole congregation of the
children of Israel murmured against Moses and
Aaron in the wilderness:
3 And the children of Israel said unto them,
Would to God we had died by the hand of the Lord
in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the flesh
pots, and when we did eat bread to the full; for
ye have brought us forth into this wilderness,
to kill this whole assembly with hunger.
4 Then said the Lord unto Moses, Behold, I will
rain bread from heaven for you; and the people
shall go out and gather a certain rate every
day, that I may prove them, whether they will
walk in my law, or no.
-
Psalms 106:25 But murmured in their
tents, and hearkened not unto
the voice of the Lord.
26 Therefore he lifted up his hand against them,
to overthrow them in the wilderness:
27 To overthrow their seed also among the
nations, and to scatter them in the lands.
11 Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written
for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.
-
Read again: All these things happen unto them
for ensample = upon whom the = End of the world
are come.
-
Romans 15:4 For whatsoever things were written
aforetime were written for our learning, that we
through patience and comfort of the scriptures
might have hope.
12 Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.
-
1 Corinthian 8:2 And if any man think that he
knoweth anything, he knoweth nothing yet as he
ought to know.
3 But if any man love God, the same is known of
him.
-
Proverbs 16:18 Pride goeth before destruction,
and an haughty spirit before a fall.
19 Better it is to be of an humble spirit with
the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the
proud.
-
Matthews 26:40 And he cometh unto the disciples,
and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter,
What, could ye not watch with me one hour?
41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into
temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but
the flesh is weak.
42 He went away again the second time, and
prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not
pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will
be done.
13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is
faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will
with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
-
You’re not going to be tempted above what ye may
be able to bear
-
Revelation 3:10 Because thou hast kept the word
of my patience, I also will keep thee
from the hour of temptation, which
shall come upon all the world, to try them that
dwell upon the earth.
11 Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which
thou hast, that no man take thy crown.
12 Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in
the temple of my God, and he shall go no more
out: and I will write upon him the name of my
God, and the name of the city of my God, which
is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of
heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my
new name.
-
Revelation 2:10 Fear none of those things which
thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast
some of you into prison, that ye may be tried;
and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou
faithful unto death, and I will give thee a
crown of life.
11 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the
Spirit saith unto the churches; He that
overcometh shall not be hurt of the second
death.
14 Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.
-
1 Corinthians 10:20 But I say, that the things
which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to
devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye
should have fellowship with devils.
21 Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the
cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the
Lord's table, and of the table of devils.
22 Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we
stronger than he?
23 All things are lawful for me, but all things
are not expedient: all things are lawful for me,
but all things edify not.
-
Revelation 13:8 And all that dwell upon the
earth shall worship him, whose names are not
written in the book of life of the Lamb slain
from the foundation of the world.
9 If any man have an ear, let him hear.
10 He that leadeth into captivity shall go into
captivity: he that killeth with the sword must
be killed with the sword. Here is the patience
and the faith of the saints.
15 I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say.
16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of
Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?
-
Bread for communion of the body of Christ
-
Matthews 26:26 And as they were eating,
Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it,
and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take,
eat; this is my body.
27 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and
gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;
28 For this is my blood of the new testament,
which is shed for many for the remission of
sins.
29 But I say unto you, I will not drink
henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that
day when I drink it new with you in my Father's
kingdom.
17 For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of
that one bread.
-
Romans 12:5 So we, being many, are one body in
Christ, and every one members one of another.
-
1 Corinthians 12:12 For as the body is one, and
hath many members, and all the members of that
one body, being many, are one body: so also is
Christ.
13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into
one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles,
whether we be bond or free; and have been all
made to drink into one Spirit.
14 For the body is not one member, but many.
18 Behold Israel after the flesh: are not they which eat of the sacrifices
partakers of the altar?
-
Romans 4:1 What shall we say then that Abraham
our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath
found?
2 For if Abraham were justified by works, he
hath whereof to glory; but not before God.
3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed
God, and it was counted unto him for
righteousness.
19 What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in
sacrifice to idols is any thing?
-
Deut 32:21 They have moved me to jealousy with
that which is not God; they have provoked me to
anger with their vanities: and I will move them
to jealousy with those which are not a people; I
will provoke them to anger with a foolish
nation.
22 For a fire is kindled in mine anger, and
shall burn unto the lowest hell, and shall
consume the earth with her increase, and set on
fire the foundations of the mountains.
20 But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to
devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with
devils.
-
Lev 17:7 And they shall no more offer their
sacrifices unto devils, after whom they have
gone a whoring. This shall be a statute for ever
unto them throughout their generations.
-
Deut 32:16 They provoked him to jealousy with
strange gods, with abominations provoked they
him to anger.
17 They sacrificed unto devils, not to God; to
gods whom they knew not, to new gods that came
newly up, whom your fathers feared not.
18 Of the Rock that begat thee thou art
unmindful, and hast forgotten God that formed
thee.
21 Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be
partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.
-
Deut 32:37 And he shall say, Where are their
gods, their rock in whom they trusted,
38 Which did eat the fat of their sacrifices,
and drank the wine of their drink offerings? let
them rise up and help you, and be your
protection.
39 See now that I, even I, am he, and there is
no god with me: I kill, and I make alive; I
wound, and I heal: neither is there any that can
deliver out of my hand.
-
False rock = Satan
-
1 Kings 18:21 And Elijah came unto all the
people, and said, How long halt ye between two
opinions? if the Lord be God, follow him: but if
Baal, then follow him. And the people answered
him not a word.
22 Then said Elijah unto the people, I, even I
only, remain a prophet of the Lord; but Baal's
prophets are four hundred and fifty men.
22 Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?
-
Exodus 20:5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to
them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am
a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the
fathers upon the children unto the third and
fourth generation of them that hate me;
6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that
love me, and keep my commandments.
23 All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things
are lawful for me, but all things edify not.
-
Romans 14:15 But if thy brother be grieved with
thy meat, now walkest thou not charitably.
Destroy not him with thy meat, for whom Christ
died.
16 Let not then your good be evil spoken of:
17 For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink;
but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the
Holy Spirit.
24 Let no man seek his own, but every man another's wealth.
-
Don't always think of yourself, help others
-
Don't be thinking about money only
-
1 Corinthians 10:33 Even as I please all men in
all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the
profit of many, that they may be saved.
-
1 Corinthians 13:5 Doth not behave itself
unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily
provoked, thinketh no evil;
6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in
the truth;
25 Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, that eat, asking no question for
conscience sake:
-
Romans 14:14 I know, and am persuaded by the
Lord Jesus, that there is nothing unclean of
itself: but to him that esteemeth any thing to
be unclean, to him it is unclean.
26 For the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof.
-
Exodus 19:5 Now therefore, if ye will obey my
voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye
shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all
people: for all the earth is mine:
6 And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests,
and an holy nation. These are the words which
thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.
27 If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go;
whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake.
-
Don't eat unclean food
-
Luke 10:7 And in the same house remain, eating
and drinking such things as they give: for the
labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from
house to house.
8 And into whatsoever city ye enter, and they
receive you, eat such things as are set before
you:
28 But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not
for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is the
Lord's, and the fulness thereof:
-
Don't be taken in = by others religions ways
-
1 Corinthians 8:10 For if any man see thee which
hast knowledge sit at meat in the idol's temple,
shall not the conscience of him which is weak be
emboldened to eat those things which are offered
to idols;
29 Conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other: for why is my liberty
judged of another man's conscience?
-
Romans 14:15 But if thy brother be grieved with
thy meat, now walkest thou not charitably.
Destroy not him with thy meat, for whom Christ
died.
30 For if I by grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I
give thanks?
-
Romans 14:6 He that regardeth the day, regardeth
it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the
day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that
eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God
thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he
eateth not, and giveth God thanks.
31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory
of God.
-
Follow God's health food laws
-
Deut 12:18 But thou must eat them before the
Lord thy God in the place which the Lord thy God
shall choose, thou, and thy son, and thy
daughter, and thy manservant, and thy
maidservant, and the Levite that is within thy
gates: and thou shalt rejoice before the Lord
thy God in all that thou puttest thine hands unt
32 Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the
church of God:
-
Deut 12:18 But thou must eat them before the
Lord thy God in the place which the Lord thy God
shall choose, thou, and thy son, and thy
daughter, and thy manservant, and thy
maidservant, and the Levite that is within thy
gates: and thou shalt rejoice before the Lord
thy God in all that thou puttest thine hands
unto.
-
Phil 1:10 That ye may approve things that are
excellent; that ye may be sincere and without
offence till the day of Christ;
33 Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the
profit of many, that they may be saved.

Feed the people = Teach God's word

This chapter take us back to the time God led
the people out of Egypt
-
1. Exodus 13:18 But God led the people
about, through the way of the
wilderness of the Red sea: and the children of
Israel went up harnessed out of the land
of Egypt.
-
2. Exodus 13:21 And the Lord went before
them by day in a pillar of a
cloud, to lead them the way; and by
night in a pillar of fire, to give them
light; to go by day and night:
22 He took not away the pillar of the cloud by
day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from
before the people.
-
3.
Exodus 17:6 Behold, I will stand before thee
there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt
smite the rock, and there shall come water out
of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did
so in the sight of the elders of Israel.
-
4.
Psalms 78:24 And had rained down manna upon them
to eat, and had given them of the corn of
heaven.
-
What did the people do, after God had showed
them all the things?
-
5. Exodus 16:2 And the whole congregation of
the children of Israel murmured against
Moses and Aaron in the wilderness:
3 And the children of Israel said unto them,
Would to God we had died by the hand of
the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we
sat by the flesh pots, and when we did eat bread
to the full; for ye have brought us forth into
this wilderness, to kill this whole
assembly with hunger.
4 Then said the Lord unto Moses, Behold,
I will rain bread from heaven for you;
and the people shall go out and gather a certain
rate every day, that I may prove them, whether
they will walk in my law, or no.
• Exactly 2520 years from the exile
of Benjamin, Iceland became an independent nation.
•
The first tribe to be
conquered by the Assyrians was Manasseh,
in 745 B.C. Exactly 2520 years later America became a nation on July 4, 1776.
(Leviticus. 26: 28-46) God warned Israel that if they persisted in continually
breaking His Laws, not only would curses come upon them.
He would punish them for seven times, (a time being 360 years, seven times would
be 2520 years) and would banish them from the land of Palestine and scatter them
among the heathens (like lost sheep)
