1 Kings 6
Book of Kings
1 Kings 6:1 And it came to pass in the four hundred and
eightieth year after the children of Israel were come out of the land of Egypt,
in the fourth year of Solomon's reign over Israel, in the month Zif, which is
the second month, that he began to build the house of the Lord.
-
2 Chronicles 3:1 Then Solomon began to build the
house of the Lord at Jerusalem in mount Moriah,
where the Lord appeared unto David his father,
in the place that David had prepared in the
threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
2 And he began to build in the second day of the
second month, in the fourth year of his reign.
-
Four hundred and eightieth year.
-
Note max the
number is Greekinal (not Cardinal) = the 480 the
year of some longer and larger period, the 490
years from the Exodus to the Dedication of the
Temple.
-
The difference of ten years being made up of
seven years in building
-
1 Kings 6:38
And in the eleventh year, in the month Bul, which is the
eighth month, was the house finished throughout
all the parts thereof, and according to all the
fashion of it. So was he seven years in building
it.
-
And three years in furnishing. Dedicated not in
seventh year, for Completion took place in the
eighth month of one year and the Dedication in
the seventh month of another.
-
1 Kings 8:2 And all the men of Israel assembled
themselves unto king Solomon at the feast in the
month Ethanim, which is the seventh month.
3 And all the elders of Israel came, and the
priests took up the ark.
-
The chronological period was 40 years in
wilderness + 450 years under judges + 40 years
of Saul + 40 years of David + 3 years of Solomon
= 573 (from 1490-917).
-
The mystical period of 480 years is obtained by
deducting the period of 93 years, when Israel's
national position was in abeyance.
-
Thus: 8 (Judges 3:8) + 18 (Judges 3:14) + 20
(Judges 4:3) + 7 (Judges 6:1) + 40 (Judges 13:1)
= 93.
-
Judges 3:8 Therefore the anger of the Lord was
hot against Israel, and he sold them into the
hand of Chushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia:
and the children of Israel served
Chushan-rishathaim eight years.
-
Judges 3:14 So the children of Israel served
Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.
-
Judges 4:3 And the children of Israel cried unto
the Lord: for he had nine hundred chariots of
iron; and twenty years he mightily oppressed the
children of Israel.
-
Judges 6:1 And the children of Israel did evil
in the sight of the Lord: and the Lord delivered
them into the hand of Midian seven years.
-
Judges 13:1 And the children of Israel did evil
again in the sight of the Lord; and the Lord
delivered them into the hand of the Philistines
forty years.
-
The eighteen years of Judges 10:7,9, was
local and beyond Jordan.
-
Judges 10:7 And the anger of the Lord was hot
against Israel, and he sold them
into the hands of the Philistines, and into the
hands of the children of Ammon.
8 And that year they vexed and oppressed the
children of Israel: eighteen years, all the
children of Israel that were on the other side
Jordan in the land of the Amorites, which is in
Gilead.
9 Moreover the children of Ammon passed over
Jordan to fight also against Judah, and against
Benjamin, and against the house of Ephraim; so
that Israel was sore distressed.
-
It did not affect the national position.
-
Hence 573-93 = 480 (from 873-93).
-
Children = sons.
-
The house of the LORD = the Temple.
-
Similar in plan to the Tabernacle, but double
the size. the LORD.
2 And the house which king Solomon built for the Lord, the
length thereof was threescore cubits, and the breadth thereof twenty cubits, and
the height thereof thirty cubits.
-
Cubit = Ranging between 21 and 25 inches. = Ap
51
3 And the porch before the temple of the house, twenty cubits
was the length thereof, according to the breadth of the house; and ten cubits
was the breadth thereof before the house.
4 And for the house he made windows of narrow lights.
5 And against the wall of the house he built chambers round about, against the
walls of the house round about, both of the temple and of the oracle: and he
made chambers round about:
-
Oracle = word
-
2 Chronicles 4:20 Moreover the candlesticks with
their lamps, that they should burn after the
manner before the oracle, of
pure gold;
21 And the flowers, and the lamps, and the
tongs, made he of gold, and that perfect gold;
-
1 Kings 6:19 And the oracle he prepared in the
house within, to set there the ark of the
covenant of the Lord.
20 And the oracle in the forepart was twenty
cubits in length, and twenty cubits in breadth,
and twenty cubits in the height thereof: and he
overlaid it with pure gold; and so covered the
altar which was of cedar.
21 So Solomon overlaid the house within
with pure gold: and he made a partition
by the chains of gold before the oracle;
and he overlaid it with gold.
-
Why was it called Oracle = this is where God
spoken with Moses
-
Exodus 25:22 And there I will meet with thee,
and I will commune with thee from above the
mercy seat, from between the two cherubims which
are upon the ark of the testimony, of all things
which I will give thee in commandment unto the
children of Israel.
-
Number 1:1 And the Lord spake unto Moses in the
wilderness of Sinai, in the tabernacle of the
congregation, on the first day of the second
month, in the second year after they were come
out of the land of Egypt, saying,
2 Take ye the sum of all the congregation of the
children of Israel, after their families, by the
house of their fathers, with the number of their
names, every male by their polls;
-
The first occurrence of
"oracle" as a rendering of dabar, word.
-
The holy of holies, because
there the word of God was and heard
-
2 Samuel 16:23 And the
counsel of Ahithophel, which he counselled in
those days, was as if a man had inquired at the
oracle of God: so was all the counsel of
Ahithophel both with David and with Absalom.
6 The nethermost chamber was five cubits broad, and the
middle was six cubits broad, and the third was seven cubits broad: for without
in the wall of the house he made narrowed rests round about, that the beams
should not be fastened in the walls of the house.
7 And the house, when it was in building, was built of stone made ready before
it was brought thither: so that there was neither hammer nor axe nor any tool of
iron heard in the house, while it was in building.
-
Made ready = made perfect.
-
Before = in the quarries afar off, or beneath
the city.
-
Heard = So in the spiritual
house.
-
Ephesians 2:20 And are
built upon the foundation of the apostles and
prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief
corner stone;
21 In whom all the building fitly framed
together groweth unto an holy temple in the
Lord:
22 In whom ye also are builded together for an
habitation of God through the Spirit.
8 The door for the middle chamber was in the right side of
the house: and they went up with winding stairs into the middle chamber, and out
of the middle into the third.
9 So he built the house, and finished it; and covered the house with beams and
boards of cedar.
10 And then he built chambers against all the house, five cubits high: and they
rested on the house with timber of cedar.
11 And the word of the Lord came to Solomon, saying,
12 Concerning this house which thou art in building, if thou wilt walk in my
statutes, and execute my judgments, and keep all my commandments to walk in
them; then will I perform my word with thee, which I spake unto David thy
father:
-
2 Samuel 7:13 He shall
build an house for my name, and I will stablish
the throne of his kingdom for ever.
-
1 Chronicles 22:10 He shall
build an house for my name; and he shall be my
son, and I will be his father; and I will
establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel
for ever.
13 And I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will
not forsake my people Israel.
14 So Solomon built the house, and finished it.
15 And he built the walls of the house within with boards of cedar, both the
floor of the house, and the walls of the cieling: and he covered them on the
inside with wood, and covered the floor of the house with planks of fir.
-
Covered = Note that all the
stonework was covered with cedar wood; and the
cedar wood covered with gold.
-
Even so the saved sinner is
covered with Christ's human and Divine
righteousness imputed to him.
-
Luke 15:22 But the father
said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe,
and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand,
and shoes on his feet:
-
Philippians 1:3 I thank my
God upon every remembrance of you,
4 Always in every prayer of mine for you all
making request with joy,
5 For your fellowship in the gospel from the
first day until now;
16 And he built twenty cubits on the sides of the house, both
the floor and the walls with boards of cedar: he even built them for it within,
even for the oracle, even for the most holy place.
17 And the house, that is, the temple before it, was forty cubits long.
-
They just describe the Holy of Holies or Oracle
= word
-
Offering of incense and golden candle stick
-
Not everyone could go in their, just the high
priest and that was only one day out of a year.
18 And the cedar of the house within was carved with knops
and open flowers: all was cedar; there was no stone seen.
-
No stones seen = because cedar was all around
about it
-
Open flower = brings forth the fruit = symbol of
truth and life
-
2 Chronicles 4:20 Moreover the candlesticks with
their lamps, that they should burn after the
manner before the oracle, of
pure gold;
21 And the flowers, and the lamps, and the
tongs, made he of gold, and that perfect gold;
-
The completeness of our covering by Christ's
merits
-
Ephesians 1:6 To the praise of the glory of his
grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the
beloved.
-
Colossians 1:28 Whom we preach, warning every
man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that
we may present every man perfect in Christ
Jesus:
-
Colossians 2:10 And ye are complete in him,
which is the head of all principality and power:
-
Colossians 4:12 Epaphras, who is one of you, a
servant of Christ, saluteth you, always
labouring fervently for you in prayers, that ye
may stand perfect and complete in all the will
of God.
19 And the oracle he prepared in the house within, to set
there the ark of the covenant of the Lord.
-
Why was it called Oracle = Because this is where God spoken
unto them
-
2 Chronicles 4:20 Moreover the candlesticks with
their lamps, that they should burn after the
manner before the oracle, of
pure gold;
21 And the flowers, and the lamps, and the
tongs, made he of gold, and that perfect gold;
20 And the oracle in the forepart was twenty cubits in
length, and twenty cubits in breadth, and twenty cubits in the height thereof:
and he overlaid it with pure gold; and so covered the altar which was of cedar.
-
Oracle = the interior of Holy of Holies
-
Covered = Note that all the
stonework was covered with cedar wood; and the
cedar wood covered with gold.
-
Even so the saved sinner is
covered with Christ's human and Divine
righteousness imputed to him.
21 So Solomon overlaid the house within with pure gold: and
he made a partition by the chains of gold before the oracle; and he overlaid it
with gold.
22 And the whole house he overlaid with gold, until he had finished all the
house: also the whole altar that was by the oracle he overlaid with gold.
-
This was the offerings of incense burning
23 And within the oracle he made two cherubims of olive tree,
each ten cubits high.
-
Oracle = Holy of Holies
-
Cherubims = overlaid or protection
-
Exodus 37:7
And he made two cherubims of gold, beaten out of
one piece made he them, on the two ends of the
mercy seat;
-
Olive tree = As in Isaiah 41:19, rendered pine
-
Isa 41:19 I will plant in the wilderness the
cedar, the shittah tree, and the myrtle, and the
oil tree; I will set in the desert the fir tree,
and the pine, and the box tree together:
-
Nehemiah 8:15 And that they should publish and
proclaim in all their cities, and in Jerusalem,
saying, Go forth unto the mount, and fetch olive
branches, and pine branches, and myrtle
branches, and palm branches, and branches of
thick trees, to make booths, as it is written.
24 And five cubits was the one wing of the cherub, and five
cubits the other wing of the cherub: from the uttermost part of the one wing
unto the uttermost part of the other were ten cubits.
25 And the other cherub was ten cubits: both the cherubims
were of one measure and one size.
26 The height of the one cherub was ten cubits, and so was it
of the other cherub.
27 And he set the cherubims within the inner house: and they
stretched forth the wings of the cherubims, so that the wing of the one touched
the one wall, and the wing of the other cherub touched the other wall; and their
wings touched one another in the midst of the house.
28 And he overlaid the cherubims with gold.
29 And he carved all the walls of the house round about with
carved figures of cherubims and palm trees and open flowers, within and without.
-
Ezekiel 41:18 And it was made with cherubims and
palm trees, so that a palm tree was between a
cherub and a cherub; and every cherub had two
faces;
19 So that the face of a man was toward the palm
tree on the one side, and the face of a young
lion toward the palm tree on the other side: it
was made through all the house round about.
-
Palm tree = it's the symbol of life
-
Open flower = fruit = truth = life
30 And the floor of the house he overlaid with gold, within
and without.
31 And for the entering of the oracle he made doors of olive
tree: the lintel and side posts were a fifth part of the wall.
32 The two doors also were of olive tree; and he carved upon
them carvings of cherubims and palm trees and open flowers, and overlaid them
with gold, and spread gold upon the cherubims, and upon the palm trees.
-
Two doors = two-leaved or double doors
-
2 Chronicles 4:22 And the snuffers, and the
basons, and the spoons, and the censers, of pure
gold: and the entry of the house, the inner
doors thereof for the most holy place, and the
doors of the house of the temple, were of gold.
-
2 Chronicles 3:7 He overlaid also the house, the
beams, the posts, and the walls thereof, and the
doors thereof, with gold; and graved cherubims
on the walls.
-
Blue and Purple = royal
33 So also made he for the door of the temple posts of olive
tree, a fourth part of the wall.
-
Door = entrance
-
This was the main entrance to the temple
34 And the two doors were of fir tree: the two leaves of the
one door were folding, and the two leaves of the other door were folding.
35 And he carved thereon cherubims and palm trees and open
flowers: and covered them with gold fitted upon the carved work.
36 And he built the inner court with three rows of hewed
stone, and a row of cedar beams.
-
This would be on outside, this would be the
porch
-
You would of have been the place for burn
offering
37 In the fourth year was the foundation of the house of the
Lord laid, in the month Zif:
-
Zif = The second month
-
2 Chronicles 3:2 And he began to build in the
second day of the second month, in the fourth
year of his reign.
38 And in the eleventh year, in the month Bul, which is the
eighth month, was the house finished throughout all the parts thereof, and
according to all the fashion of it. So was he seven years in building it.
-
Eighth month = 1 Kings 6:1, and
compare Dedication later, in "seventh month"
-
1 Kings 8:2 And all the men of Israel assembled
themselves unto king Solomon at the feast in the
month Ethanim, which is the seventh month.
3 And all the elders of Israel came, and the
priests took up the ark.
-
That's more than one, and probably three, years
in completing the appointments.
-
Parts = appointments.
-
7 and 1/2 years of the building of the temple
plus 3 more years for the inside
-
Seven years for the building itself, and
probably three years for the "appointments".
-
Contrast these seven with the thirteen
-
1 Kings 7:1 But Solomon was building his own
house thirteen years, and he finished all his
house.
• Exactly 2520 years from the exile
of Benjamin, Iceland became an independent nation.
•
The first tribe to be
conquered by the Assyrians was Manasseh,
in 745 B.C. Exactly 2520 years later America became a nation on July 4, 1776.
(Leviticus. 26: 28-46) God warned Israel that if they persisted in continually
breaking His Laws, not only would curses come upon them.
He would punish them for seven times, (a time being 360 years, seven times would
be 2520 years) and would banish them from the land of Palestine and scatter them
among the heathens (like lost sheep)
