them to go astray, they have turned them away on the mountains:
they have gone from mountain to hill, they have forgotten their

Hosea 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of

Genesis 25:21 And Isaac intreated the Lord
for his wife, because she was barren: and the Lord was intreated of him, and
Rebekah his wife conceived.
22 And the children struggled together within her; and she said, If it be so,
why am I thus? And she went to enquire of the Lord.
23 And the Lord said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, and
two manner of people shall be separated from
thy bowels; and the
one people shall be stronger
than the other people; and the
elder shall serve the younger.
24 And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were
twins in her womb.
25 And the first came out red, all over like an
hairy garment;
and they called his name Esau.
26 And after that came his brother out, and his hand took
hold on Esau's heel; and his name was called
Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when
she bare them.
27 And the boys grew: and Esau was a
cunning
hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob
was a plain man, dwelling in tents.
28 And Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison: but
Rebekah loved Jacob.
29 And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint:
30 And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same
red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called
Edom.
31 And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy
birthright.
32 And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit
shall this birthright do to me?
33 And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob.
-
Esau sells his birthright to Jacob for a bowl of
red pottage
-
Just like today, people selling their birthright
for money.
-
Remember when Israel was going into the
Promised
Land, at the last hour, only two stood for the
Lord. The rest didn't follow what God told them.
34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and
he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus
Esau despised his birthright.

he was rejected: for he found no place
of repentance, though he sought it
carefully with tears.

Edom (red). The name Edom was given to Esau, the first-born son of Isaac came
out red, and twin brother of Jacob, when he sold his birthright to the latter
for a meal of lentil pottage.
Roman 9:13 As it is written, Jacob
have I loved, but Esau have I hated (love less).
14 What shall we say then? Is there
unrighteousness with God? God forbid.
15 For he saith to Moses, I will have
mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I
will have compassion.
16 So then it is not of him that
willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.
-
Why did God hate (love less) Esau?
-
Genesis 25:34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and
pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his
way: thus Esau despised his birthright.
-
Esau
despised his birthright, He didn't care about his
birthright, He sold it
-
God knew the soul He placed in the flesh body of this man, who was
called Esau.

Before he was born of woman

The fatness of the earth, and of Hebrew of the

touching thee, doth comfort himself, purposing to kill thee.
Genesis 32:3 And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau
his brother unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom.
His descendants were called Edomites.
Edom was called Mount Seir and Idumea also. Edom was wholly a mountainous
country.
It embraced the narrow mountainous tract (about 100 miles long by 20 broad)
extending along the eastern side of the Arabah from the northern end of the Gulf
of Elath to near the southern end of the Dead Sea.
The ancient capital of Edom was Bozrah (Buseireh).
Sela (Petra) appears to have been the principal stronghold in the days of
Amaziah ( B.C. 838).
2 Kings 14:7 He slew of Edom in the valley of salt ten thousand, and took Selah
by war, and called the name of it Joktheel unto this day.
Elath and Ezion-geber were the seaports.
2 Samuel 8:14 And he put garrisons in Edom; throughout all Edom put he
garrisons, and all they of Edom became David's servants. And
the Lord preserved David whithersoever he went.

Genesis 36:19 These are the sons of Esau, who is Edom, and
these are their dukes.
20 These are the sons of Seir the Horite, who inhabited the land; Lotan, and
Shobal, and Zibeon, and Anah,

children of Seir in the land of Edom.
Genesis 36:43 Duke Magdiel, duke Iram: these be the dukes of Edom, according to

Exodus 17:8 Then came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim.
-
Then came Amalek. a descendant of Esau; also
his posterity and their country
-
Amalek came to fight for the water.
-
Amalek came behind and attacked the rear, and he
"feared not God",
-
Amalek = put for Amalekites.
-
At Rephidim, they got water plus Amalek; at
Meribah, water plus Edom

9 And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight with
Amalek: to morrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the
rod of God in mine hand.
-
Fight = There was a large population in the
peninsula at this time.
-
A wilderness, a place of pasture, not a desert.
Genesis 27:1 And it came to pass, that when
Isaac was old, and his eyes were dim, so that he could not see, he
called Esau his eldest son, and said unto him, My son: and he said unto him,
Behold, here am I.
-
Old about 137 years
(same age as his brother Ishmael died at).
-
He recovered and lived
43 years longer.
2 And he said, Behold now, I am old, I know not the
day of my death:
3 Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go
out to the field, and take me some venison;
-
Take me some venison, the result of hunting
-
Esau missed his venison and lost his birthright.
-
Was he now to miss it again and lose his
blessing?
4 And make me savoury meat, such as I love, and bring
it to me, that I may eat; that my soul may bless thee before I die.
-
My soul = myself
-
Bless thee = He must have heard that he was to
bless Jacob, for it was "by faith" he ultimately
did so; and it came "by hearing"
-
Romans 10:17 So then faith cometh
by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
-
"The will of the flesh" made him wish to bless
Esau
-
But his faith in the end overcame "the will of
the flesh" in him.
5 And Rebekah heard when Isaac spake to Esau his son.
And Esau went to the field to hunt for venison, and to bring it.
6 And Rebekah spake unto Jacob her son, saying, Behold, I heard
thy father speak unto Esau thy brother, saying,
7 Bring me venison, and make me savoury meat, that I may eat, and bless thee
before the Lord before my death.
8 Now therefore, my son, obey my voice according to that which I command
thee.
9 Go now to the flock, and fetch me from thence two good kids of the goats; and
I will make them savoury meat for thy father, such as he loveth:
10 And thou shalt bring it to thy father, that he may eat, and that he
may bless thee before his death.
11 And Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, Behold, Esau
my brother is a hairy man, and I am a smooth man:
12 My father peradventure will feel me, and I shall seem to him as a
deceiver; and I shall bring a curse upon me, and not a
blessing.
13 And his mother said unto him, Upon
me be thy curse, my son: only obey my voice, and go fetch me them.
14 And he went, and fetched, and brought them to his mother: and his
mother made savoury meat, such as his father loved.
15 And Rebekah took goodly raiment of her eldest son Esau,
which were with her in the house, and put them upon Jacob her younger
son:
-
Raiment = All raiment
in the East to this day marks the social rank
and position of the wearer.
-
Among the Bedouins,
the chief and his eldest son wear a distinctive
garment.
-
This accounts for
Jacob's desire here, and his act with Joseph
-
Genesis 37:3 Now
Israel (Jacob) loved Joseph more than
all his children, because he was the
son of his old age: and he made him a coat of
many colours.
4 And when his brethren saw that their
father loved him more than all his brethren,
they hated him, and could not speak
peaceably unto him.
-
Genesis 32:28 And he said, Thy name shall
be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a
prince hast thou power with God and with men,
and hast prevailed.
-
Being the garment of
the firstborn it doubtless denoted also his
official and priestly position.
-
Here = beged,
used of sacred things.
-
Not the word rendered
clothes in Deut 29:5 And I have led you forty
years in the wilderness: your clothes are not
waxen old upon you, and thy shoe is not waxen
old upon thy foot.
-
No wonder Esau is
called "profane" when he sold this his
birthright.
-
Hebrew 12:16 Lest
there be any fornicator, or profane person, as
Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his
birthright.
17 For ye know how that afterward, when
he would have inherited the blessing,
he was rejected: for he found no place
of repentance, though he sought it
carefully with tears.
16 And she put the skins of the kids of the
goats upon his hands, and upon the smooth of his neck:
17 And she gave the savoury meat and the bread, which she had prepared,
into the hand of her son Jacob.
18 And he came unto his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here
am I; who art thou, my son?
19 And Jacob said unto his father, I am Esau
thy firstborn; I have done according as thou badest me: arise, I pray
thee, sit and eat of my venison, that thy soul may bless me.
-
I am = Said perhaps
because he had bought the birthright.
-
Thy soul = thou
20 And Isaac said unto his son, How
is it that thou hast found it so quickly, my son? And he said, Because the Lord
thy God brought it to me.
21 And Isaac said unto Jacob, Come near, I pray thee, that I may feel
thee, my son, whether thou be my very son Esau or not.
22 And Jacob went near unto Isaac his father; and he felt him, and said,
The voice is Jacob's voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau.
23 And he discerned him not, because his hands were hairy, as
his brother Esau's hands: so he blessed him.
24 And he said, Art thou my very son Esau? And he said, I am.
25 And he said, Bring it near to me, and I will eat of my son's venison,
that my soul may bless thee. And he brought it near to him, and he did eat: and
he brought him wine, and he drank.
26 And his father Isaac said unto him, Come near now, and kiss me, my son.
-
Now = of time, but an expletive in command,
emphasising the solemnity of the command.
-
It must have been at this point that Isaac's
faith overcame "the will of the flesh", and made
him resolve to bless Jacob, in spite of it.
27 And he came near, and kissed him: and he smelled
the smell of his raiment, and blessed him, and said, See, the smell of my son is
as the smell of a field which the Lord hath blessed:
28 Therefore God give thee of the dew of heaven, and the
fatness of the earth, and plenty of corn and wine:
29 Let people serve thee, and nations bow down to thee: be
lord over thy brethren, and let thy mother's sons bow down to thee:
cursed be every one that curseth thee, and blessed be he that
blesseth thee.

-
Genesis 25:25 And the first came out

-
Jacob got the blessing - shall be stronger
30 And it came to pass, as soon as Isaac had
made an end of blessing Jacob, and Jacob was yet scarce gone out from
the presence of Isaac his father, that Esau his brother came in from his
hunting.
-
Scarce gone out = "going was gone" = well
represented by the word "scarce".
-
Genesis 26:28 And they said, We saw
certainly that the LORD was with thee: and we
said, Let there be now an oath betwixt us,
even betwixt us and thee, and let us make a
covenant with thee;
31 And he also had made savoury meat, and brought it
unto his father, and said unto his father, Let my father arise, and eat of his
son's venison, that thy soul may bless me.
32 And Isaac his father said unto him, Who art thou? And he said, I am
thy son, thy firstborn Esau.
-
Thy firstborn = Esau still claims what he had
sold
33 And Isaac trembled very exceedingly, and
said, Who? where is he that hath taken venison, and brought it me, and
I have eaten of all before thou camest, and have blessed him? yea, and he shall
be blessed.
-
Trembled very exceedingly is thus beautifully
rendered, in Hebrew. "trembled a great trembling
greatly.
-
This trembling was not from doubt, or from the
discovery now made, but on account of the
difficulty into which it had brought him with a
man of Esau's temperament.
-
Genesis 26:27 And Isaac said unto them,
Wherefore come ye to me, seeing ye hate me, and
have sent me away from you?
-
Genesis 25:21 And Isaac intreated the LORD for
his wife, because she was barren: and the
LORD was intreated of him, and Rebekah his wife
conceived.
34 And when Esau heard the words of his
father, he cried with a great and exceeding bitter cry, and said unto
his father, Bless me, even me also, O my father.
35 And he said, Thy brother came with subtilty, and hath taken away thy
blessing.
-
Esau cried out to his father and said, bless me
also
-
Isaac said, thy brother hath taken thy blessing
-
Subtilty = in the
sense of deceiving
36 And he said, Is not he rightly named Jacob? for he
hath supplanted me these two times: he took away my birthright; and,
behold, now he hath taken away my blessing. And he said, Hast thou not
reserved a blessing for me?
37 And Isaac answered and said unto Esau, Behold, I
have made him thy lord, and all his brethren have I given to him for
servants; and with corn and wine have I sustained him: and what shall I do now
unto thee, my son?
-
Thy lord = a mighty man unto thee
-
Fulfilled in 2 Samuel 8:14 And he put
garrisons in Edom; throughout all Edom put he
garrisons, and all they of Edom became David's
servants. And the LORD preserved David
whithersoever he went.
38 And Esau said unto his father, Hast thou
but one blessing, my father? bless me, even me also, O
my father. And Esau lifted up his voice, and wept.
-
Wept, but could not change his father's
mind.
39 And Isaac his father answered and said unto him,
Behold, thy dwelling shall be the fatness of the earth, and of the dew
of heaven from above;
-
The fatness of the earth, and of Hebrew of the
fatness, The "of", which is omitted in the first
clause.
-
Should be "Far from the fatness of the earth
shall be thy dwelling, and far from the dew of
the heavens, "etc.
-
Jacob had already received the blessing "of" the
fatness of the earth or the land in (verse 28).
-
Esau's was to be far from it, in the desert; and
so it was.
-
Isaiah 22:3 All thy rulers are fled

dominion, that thou shalt break his yoke from off thy neck.
-
Genesis 32:6 And the messengers returned
to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau,
and also he cometh to meet thee, and four
hundred men with him.
-
7 Then Jacob was greatly afraid and
distressed: and he divided the people
that was with him, and the flocks, and
herds, and the camels, into two bands;
8 And said, If Esau come to the one
company, and smite it, then the other company
which is left shall escape.
9 And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham,
and God of my father Isaac, the LORD which
saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to
thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee:
10 I am not worthy of the least of all the
mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast
shewed unto thy servant; for with my staff I
passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two
bands.
11 Deliver me, I pray thee,
from the hand of my brother, from the
hand of Esau: for I fear him,
lest he will come and smite me, and the
mother with the children.
12 And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good,
and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which
cannot be numbered for multitude.
13 And he lodged there that same night; and
took of that which came to his hand a present
for Esau his brother;
14 Two hundred she goats, and twenty he goats,
two hundred ewes, and twenty rams.
15 Thirty milch camels with their colts, forty
kine, and ten bulls, twenty she asses, and ten
foals.
16 And he delivered them into the hand of
his servants, every drove by themselves; and
said unto his servants, Pass over before
me, and put a space betwixt drove and
drove.
17 And he commanded the foremost, saying, When
Esau my brother meeteth thee, and asketh thee,
saying, Whose art thou? and whither goest
thou? and whose are these before thee?
18 Then thou shalt say, They be thy
servant Jacob's; it is a present sent
unto my lord Esau: and, behold, also he is
behind us.
19 And so commanded he the second, and the
third, and all that followed the droves, saying,
On this manner shall ye speak unto Esau, when ye
find him.
20 And say ye moreover, Behold, thy servant
Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will
appease him with the present that goeth before
me, and afterward I will see his face;
peradventure he will accept of me.
21 So went the present over before him: and
himself lodged that night in the company.
22 And he rose up that night, and took his two
wives, and his two women servants, and his
eleven sons, and passed over the ford
Jabbok.
-
Thou shalt break = Fulfilled in 2 Kings 8:20
In his days Edom revolted from under the
hand of Judah, and made a king over themselves.
-
21 So Joram went over to Zair, and all the
chariots with him: and he rose by night, and
smote the Edomites which compassed him about,
and the captains of the chariots: and the people
fled into their tents.
-
22 Yet Edom revolted from under the hand of
Judah unto this day. Then Libnah revolted at the
same time.
-
Shall serve thy brother = 1 Samuel 14:47
So Saul took the kingdom over Israel, and fought
against all his enemies on every side, against
Moab, and against the children of Ammon, and
against Edom, and against the kings of Zobah,
and against the Philistines: and whithersoever
he turned himself, he vexed them.
-

Edom; throughout all Edom put he garrisons, and
all they of Edom became David's servants. And
the LORD preserved David whithersoever he went.

1 Kings 22:47 There was then no
king in Edom: a deputy was king.
-
1 Chronicles 18:13 And he put garrisons
in Edom; and all the Edomites became David's
servants. Thus the LORD preserved David
whithersoever he went.
41 And Esau hated Jacob because of the
blessing wherewith his father blessed him: and Esau said in his heart,
The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then will I slay my
brother Jacob.
-
At hand = Isaac mistaken = Esau mistaken here
-
Esau hated Jacob
because of the blessing
-
The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then
will I slay my brother Jacob.
42 And these words of Esau her elder son were
told to Rebekah: and she sent and called Jacob her younger son,
and said unto him, Behold, thy brother Esau, as touching thee, doth
comfort himself, purposing to kill thee.
43 Now therefore, my son, obey my voice; and arise, flee thou to Laban
my brother to Haran;
-
Flee thou = flee for thyself
-
Haran = Genesis 11:31 And Terah took
Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his
son's son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his
son Abram's wife; and they went forth with them
from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of
Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and dwelt
there.
44 And tarry with him a few days, until thy
brother's fury turn away;
-
A few days = Rebekah mistaken, for he was
there 20 years
45 Until thy brother's anger turn away from
thee, and he forget that which thou hast done to him:
then I will send, and fetch thee from thence: why should I be deprived also of
you both in one day?
-
Both = Jacob by Esau's hand, and Esau by
the avenger of blood
46 And Rebekah said to Isaac, I am weary of my life
because of the daughters of Heth: if Jacob take a wife of the daughters
of Heth, such as these which are of the daughters of the land,
what good shall my life do me?
-
Daughters of Heth. Refers to Esau's wives
-
What good = "Wherefore to me life? "What
