Isaiah 53
Book of Isaiah
Isaiah 53:1 Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the
Lord revealed?
-
Arm = Is the strength and power
-
Roman 10:16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias
(Isaiah) saith, Lord, who
hath believed our report?
17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
18 But I say, Have they not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all
the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world.
-
John 12:38 That the saying of Esaias (Isaiah)
the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake,
Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom
hath the arm of the Lord been revealed?
-
1 Chron 21:17 And David said unto God, Is it not
I that commanded the people to be numbered? even
I it is that have sinned and done evil indeed;
but as for these sheep, what have they done? let
thine hand, I pray thee, O Lord my God, be on
me, and on my father's house; but not on thy
people, that they should be plagued.
2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out
of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see
him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.
-
The nation will yet say it in their confession
and weeping.
-
This was the Lamb of God
3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted
with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised,
and we esteemed him not.
-
Jesus was despised, All men left the Lord, only
few women stayed with Him
-
John 1:10 He was in the world, and the world was
made by him, and the world knew him not.
11 He came unto his own, and his own
received him not.
4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did
esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
-
Jesus (and no one else)
-
Borne carried = borne the punishment for the
judgment which was brought about by their sins.
-
Griefs = sorrows
-
Matthew 8:17 That it might be fulfilled which
was spoken by Esaias (Isaiah) the prophet,
saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare
our sicknesses.
5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our
iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with
his stripes we are healed.
-
With His stripes, our
sins are forgiven
-
Wounded = pierced
-
1 Peter 2:24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we,
being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye
were healed.
25 For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the
Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his
own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
-
We = like sheep
-
It's there shepherd, that take care of the
sheep, But he was wounded for our
transgressions, he was bruised for our
iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was
upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
-
1 Peter 2:22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:
23 Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he
threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:
-
24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we,
being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye
were healed.
25 For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the
Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.
7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth:
he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her
shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.
-
Sheep trusts their shepherd
-
1 Peter 2:22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:
23 Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he
threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:
-
24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we,
being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye
were healed.
25 For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the
Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.
-
Opened not His mouth, Idiom for silence and
submission
-
Acts 8:32 The place of the scripture which he
read was this, He was led as a sheep to the
slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his
shearer, so opened he not his mouth:
33 In his humiliation his judgment was taken
away: and who shall declare his generation? for
his life is taken from the earth.
-
John 1:34 And I saw, and bare record that this
is the Son of God.
35 Again the next day after John stood, and two
of his disciples;
36 And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he
saith, Behold the Lamb of God!
37 And the two disciples heard him speak, and
they followed Jesus.
8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his
generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the
transgression of my people was he stricken.
-
From prison and from judgment = by constraint
and by sentence He was taken away.
-
Those that followed Him, left him.
-
Cut off = Daniel 9:26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not
for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy
the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood,
and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.
-
Thus climax of this prophecy is reached.
-
1. A hint = Isaiah 42:3 A bruised reed shall he
not break, and the smoking flax shall he not
quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto
truth. (4) He shall not fail nor be discouraged,
till he have set judgment in the earth: and the
isles shall wait for his law.
-
2. Open lament = Isaiah 49:4 Then I said, I have
laboured in vain, I have spent my strength for
nought, and in vain: yet surely my judgment is
with the Lord, and my work with my God.
-
3.Personal suffering; now = Isaiah 50:6 I gave
my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them
that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face
from shame and spitting.
-
4. Violent death = Isaiah 53:7 He was oppressed,
and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his
mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter,
and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so
he openeth not his mouth.
8 He was taken from prison and from judgment:
and who shall declare his generation? for he was
cut off out of the land of the living: for the
transgression of my people was he stricken.
9 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death;
because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.
-
He made, one or they appointed, or assigned His
grave or, it His grave was appointed, made is
rendered "appoint"
-
Even where it is rendered "to make" it has the
force of "appoint"
-
Matthew 27:38 Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right
hand, and another on the left.
-
Jesus had done no violence, neither was any
deceit in his mouth.
-
Wicked = criminals, these have a separate part
assigned in all Jewish cemeteries.
-
Rich man = Matthew 27:57 When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named
Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple:
58 He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate
commanded the body to be delivered.
59 And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen
cloth,
60 And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock:
and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.
61 And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over
against the sepulchre.
10 Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when
thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he
shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in
his hand.
-
When thou shalt make, this introduces the break
in the Dispensations, which is the subject of
the rest of the chapter: the "glory which shall
follow" the sufferings.
-
An offering for sin = the trespass offering
-
Psalms 40:1 I waited patiently for the Lord; and
he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.
2 He brought me up also out of an horrible pit,
out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a
rock, and established my goings.
3 And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even
praise unto our God: many shall see it, and
fear, and shall trust in the Lord.
4 Blessed is that man that maketh the Lord his
trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as
turn aside to lies.
5 Many, O Lord my God, are thy wonderful works
which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are
to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order
unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them,
they are more than can be numbered.
6 Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire;
mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and
sin offering hast thou not required.
7 Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the
book it is written of me,
-
8 I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea,
thy law is within my heart.
9 I have preached righteousness in the great
congregation: lo, I have not refrained my lips,
O Lord, thou knowest.
10 I have not hid thy righteousness within my
heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy
salvation: I have not concealed thy loving
kindness and thy truth from the great
congregation.
11 Withhold not thou thy tender mercies from me,
O Lord: let thy loving kindness and thy truth
continually preserve me.
12 For innumerable evils have compassed me
about: mine iniquities have taken hold upon me,
so that I am not able to look up; they are more
than the hairs of mine head: therefore my heart
faileth me.
13 Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me: O Lord,
make haste to help me.
14 Let them be ashamed and confounded together
that seek after my soul to destroy it; let them
be driven backward and put to shame that wish me
evil.
15 Let them be desolate for a reward of their
shame that say unto me, Aha, aha.
16 Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be
glad in thee: let such as love thy salvation say
continually, The Lord be magnified.
-
He shall see His seed: "see" corresponding with
"see" in the result, issue, and reward of His
suffering.
-
Isaiah 52:15 So shall he sprinkle many nations;
the kings shall shut their mouths at him: for
that which had not been told them shall they
see; and that which they had not heard shall
they consider.
-
Psalms 22:30 A seed shall serve him; it shall be
accounted to the Lord for a generation.
-
Psalms 24:6 This is the generation of them that
seek him, that seek thy face, O Jacob. Selah.
-
The Chaldee Tarum reads "they (His seed) shall
see the kingdom of their Messiah
11 He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by
his knowledge shall my righteous servant
justify many; for he shall bear
their iniquities.
-
By His knowledge, The Lord's loved for us.
"Satisfied by His knowledge, My righteous
Servant shall justify many, for he shall bear.
-
We have not an impotent Father, or a
disappointed Christ, or a defeated Holy Spirit,
as is so commonly preached: but a omnipotent
Father, an all-victorious Christ and an Almighty
Holy Spirit, able to break the hardest heart and
subdue the stoutest will.
-
Justify = to make right
12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall
divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul
unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the
sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.
-
Divide = apportion, or assign
-
Poured out, only here (in the "latter" portion)
and (the "former" portion)
-
Isaiah 32:15 Until the spirit be poured upon us
from on high, and the wilderness be a fruitful
field, and the fruitful field be counted for a
forest.
-
He was numbered = Mark 15:28 And the scripture
was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered
with the transgressors.
