Jeremiah 1 Book of Jeremiah
Jeremiah means Human kings "rejected."
David's "righteous Branch" "raised up."
Jeremiah
1:1 The words of Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah, of the priests that were
in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin:
-
Jeremiah's prophecy is
dated (Jeremiah 1:2,3) as being in the days of
Josiah ... in the thirteenth year of
his reign.
-
It came also in the days of
Jehoiakim the son of Josiah ... unto the end of
the eleventh year of Zedekiah ... unto the
carrying away of Jerusalem captive in the fifth
month."
-
The 13th year of Josiah was
518 B.C.
-
The 11th year of Zedekiah
was 477 B.C.
-
Therefore the whole period
covered by Jeremiah was 41 years.
-
It is highly probable that
this period was exactly forty years the last
probationary period vouch safed by God, before
Jerusalem was destroyed and the Temple burnt.
-
But, as the month in the
thirteenth year of Josiah, at
which the Word first came to Jeremiah, is not
stated, the whole period has to be shown as
above, 41 years.
-
Having regard to the
Formulae of prophetic utterances, there appear
to be some fifty-one distinct and clearly marked
prophecies, commencing with some such formula as
"The word of the LORD came".
-
It would have been well if
the book could have been divided into fifty-one
chapters (instead of fifty-two)
-
Like the corresponding
period of probation covered by the Acts of the
Apostles, before the destruction of the second
Temple.
-
Should be repeated in each
of these passages, from Jeremiah 47:1 " The word
of God came to Jeremiah the
prophet against".
2 To whom the word of the LORD came in the days of Josiah the son of
Amon king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign.
-
The word of the LORD came. It is remarkable that, in the four longer
prophets, this formula is almost entirely confined to the two who
were priests (Jeremiah and Ezekiel).

Josiah. Three kings named here and in Jeremiah
1:3 It came also in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah
king of Judah, unto the end of the eleventh year of Zedekiah the son
of Josiah king of Judah, unto the carrying away of Jerusalem captive
in the fifth month.
-
2 Kings 23:31 Jehoahaz was twenty and three years old when he began
to reign; and he reigned three months in Jerusalem. And his mother's
name was Hamutal, the daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah.
-
2 Kings 24:8 Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he began
to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months. And his mother's
name was Nehushta, the daughter of Elnathan of Jerusalem.
-
Two others not named here (Jehoahaz and
Jehoiachin), who reigned only three months each.
-
Thirteenth year. A year after Josiah began his
reformation
-
2 Chronicles 34:3 For in the eighth year
of his reign, while he was yet young, he began to seek after the God
of David his father: and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah
and Jerusalem from the high places, and the groves, and the carved
images, and the molten images.
-
Sixty-six years after Isaiah ended. For the
chronology of Jeremiah.
-
Jeremiah was probably still at Anathoth.
-
2 Chronicles 34:22 And Hilkiah, and they that the king had
appointed, went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the
son of Tikvath, the son of Hasrah, keeper of the wardrobe; (now she
dwelt in Jerusalem in the college:) and they spake to her to that
effect.
3 It came also in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah,
unto the end of the eleventh year of Zedekiah the son of Josiah king of
Judah, unto the carrying away of Jerusalem captive in the fifth month.
-
It came also in the days. Genesis 14:1
And it came to pass in the days of Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch
king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of
nations;
-
The fifth month. The month that Jerusalem was
destroyed.
-
Jeremiah 52:12 Now in the fifth month, in the tenth day of the
month, which was the nineteenth year of Nebuchadrezzar king of
Babylon, came Nebuzar-adan, captain of the guard, which served the
king of Babylon, into Jerusalem.
-
2 Kings 25:3 And on the ninth day of the fourth month the
famine prevailed in the city, and there was no bread for the people
of the land.
-
2 Kings 25:8 And in the fifth month, on the seventh day
of the month, which is the nineteenth year of king
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, came Nebuzar-adan, captain of the
guard, a servant of the king of Babylon, unto Jerusalem:
-
After that, Jeremiah continued in the Land;
and, later, in Egypt.
-
Jeremiah 40:1
The word that came to Jeremiah from the
LORD, after that Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard had let him
go from Ramah, when he had taken him being bound in chains among all
that were carried away captive of Jerusalem and Judah, which were
carried away captive unto Babylon.
-
Jeremiah 42:7 And it came to pass after ten
days, that the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah.
4 Then the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
-
Then, in the thirteenth year of Josiah.
-
Word, because referring to this special
prophecy.
5 Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest
forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet
unto the nations.
-
I formed thee in the belly
I knew thee
-
This is certainly plainly stated.
-
I knew you before you were in your mother's
belly.
-
God knew the soul He placed in the flesh body of
this man, who is called Jeremiah.
-
And do you know what that means?
-
Before you were born of woman into this world
that is, God knew you.
-
He sanctified you, if you're one of the elect,
and destined you to teach His truth.
-
I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations =
Gentiles = All races
-
Sanctified thee = set thee apart, or, hallowed
thee.
-
Exodus 3:5 And he said, Draw not nigh
hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for
the place whereon thou standest is Holy Ground.
-
Compare John Baptist, Luke 1:15 For he shall be
great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink
neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be
filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his
mother's womb.
16 And many of the children
of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.
17 And he shall go before him in the spirit
and power of Elias (Elijah),
to turn the hearts of the fathers to the
children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of
the just; to make ready a people prepared for
the Lord.
-
Paul, Galations 1:15 But when it pleased
God, who separated me from my mother's womb, and
called me by his grace,
16 To reveal his Son
in me, that I might preach him among the
heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh
and blood:
-
Samson, Judges 13:3 And the angel
of the LORD appeared unto the woman, and said
unto her, Behold now, thou art barren,
and bearest not: but thou shalt conceive, and
bear a son.
6 Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! behold, I cannot speak: for I am a child.
7 But the LORD said unto me, Say not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to
all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt
speak.
-
Numbers 22:20 And God came unto Balaam at
night, and said unto him, If the men come to call thee, rise up, and
go with them; but yet the word which I shall say unto thee, that
shalt thou do.
8 Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee,
saith the LORD.
9 Then the LORD put forth his hand, and touched my mouth. And the LORD
said unto me, Behold, I have put my words in thy mouth.
10 See, I have this day set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms,
to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down, to
build, and to plant.
11 Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Jeremiah, what
seest thou? And I said, I see a rod of an almond tree.
-
The almond tree (tree or nut; as being the earliest
in bloom) almond (tree).
12 Then said the LORD unto me, Thou hast well seen: for I will hasten my
word to perform it.
13 And the word of the LORD came unto me the
second time, saying, What
seest thou? And I said, I see a seething pot; and the face thereof is
toward the north.
14 Then the LORD said unto me, Out of the north an evil shall break
forth upon all the inhabitants of the land.
15 For, lo, I will call all the families of the kingdoms of the north,
saith the LORD; and they shall come, and they shall set every one his
throne at the entering of the gates of Jerusalem, and against all the
walls thereof round about, and against all the cities of Judah.

Note these two kingdoms the 5th and the 6th. The feet are the two branches from whence the
ten toes come, being the same as the

-
Mark 13:14 But when ye shall see the abomination of
desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it
(he) ought not, (let him that readeth understand,) then let them that
be in Judaea flee to the mountains:
16 And I will utter my judgments against them touching all their
wickedness, who have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other
gods, and worshipped the works of their own hands.
-
Worshipped the works of their own hands
17 Thou therefore gird up thy loins, and arise, and speak unto them all
that I command thee: be not dismayed at their faces, lest I confound
thee before them.
-
Gird was their belt. In this time men wore skirts. When they went to
war they would take their gird (belt) to hold their skirt up.
-
Ephesians 6:11 Put on the whole armour of God,
that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
-
Last days = Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not
against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers,
against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual
wickedness in high places.
13 Wherefore take unto you the whole
armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and
having done all, to stand. 14 Stand therefore, having your loins
girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of
righteousness; 15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the
gospel of peace; 16 Above all, taking the shield of faith,
wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the
wicked. 17 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but
against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the
darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
18 For, behold, I have made thee this day a defenced city, and an iron
pillar, and brasen walls against the whole land, against the kings of
Judah, against the princes thereof, against the priests thereof, and
against the people of the land.
-
Made thee = give thee (as)
-
Brasen walls, with two early printed editions
read "a wall of bronze".
-
Against, Anaphora, by which "against" is
repeated seven times.
-
In order to emphasize the fact that as man's
thoughts and ways are the opposite of God's.
-
It is impossible for a prophet who is God's
spokesman to be other than "against" man.
-
Isaiah 55:8 For My thoughts are not your
thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, saith the LORD.
-
Jeremiah 34:19 The princes of Judah, and the princes of Jerusalem,
the eunuchs, and the priests, and all the people of the land, which
passed between the parts of the calf;
20 I will even
give them into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of them
that seek their life: and their dead bodies shall be for
meat unto the fowls of the heaven, and to the beasts of the earth.
21 And Zedekiah king of Judah and his princes will I
give into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of
them that seek their life, and into the hand of the
king of Babylon's army, which are gone up from you.
19 And they shall fight against thee; but they shall not prevail against
thee; for I am with thee, saith the LORD, to deliver thee.
