John 8
Adultery Takes Two, where is the man? After Jesus said, He that is
without sin among you let him first cast a stone at
her. Being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by
one. Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing
in the midst.
Jesus says...When
Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto
her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?
She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I
condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!
Matthew 23:29 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!
because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the
righteous,
30 And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have
been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
31 Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that
ye are the children of them which killed the
prophets.
32 Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.
33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye
escape the damnation of hell?
John 8:1 Jesus went unto the mount of Olives.
2 And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the
people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them.
3 And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in
adultery; and when they had set her in the midst,
-
The scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a
woman taken in adultery
-
Where is the man?
-
It takes two
-
This is what false preachers teach today
"lies"
-
Colossians 2:4 And this I say, lest any man should beguile you with enticing words.
-
Colossians 2:8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit,
after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and
not
after Christ.
4 They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the
very act.
-
Theses were saying, this woman taken in
adultery, in the very act.
-
Again, Where is the man?
-
In the very act. Greek = means
self-detected
5 Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but
what sayest thou?
-
Moses = grace and truth. In the days of Moses
there was grace, and the law itself was an
exhibition of truth; but when Jesus Christ came,
He was Himself the Truth, the very
personification of truth, and His life and death
were the supreme manifestation of grace.
-
John 1:17 For the law was given by Moses, but
grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
-
John 6:32 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily,
verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that
bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the
true bread from heaven.
33 For the bread of God is he which cometh down
from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.
-
Commanded . . . stoned = This law referred only
to a "betrothed damsel"; and to show that the
Lord knew their thoughts, and knew also that
this was another man's "wife".
-
He complied with the law prescribed in "such" a
case, and stooped down and wrote the curses (as
required in John 8:23) on the ground.
-
John 8:23 And he said unto them, Ye are from
beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world;
I am not of this world.
-
But = therefore
6 This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But
Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though
he heard them not.
-
Tempting = testing = They were testing Jesus
-
What did Jesus do?
-
Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on
the ground, as though he heard them not.
-
The temptation was in the word "such", and of two
cases they mention the punishment without defining what it was: for the
one in (a virgin) the death was stoning; but in the case of a "wife" the
punishment was not stoning, but required a special procedure (Numbers
5:11-31, which left the punishment with God.
-
Deuteronomy 22:23 If a damsel that is a virgin be
betrothed unto an husband, and a man find her in the city, and lie with
her;
24 Then ye shall bring them both out unto
the gate of that city, and ye shall stone them
with stones that they die; the damsel, because she cried not, being in
the city; and the man, because he hath humbled his neighbour's wife: so
thou shalt put away evil from among you.
-
Today laws = Ask God to forgive you for our sins
-
That = in order that
-
On = into the dust of the earth
7 So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto
them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at
her.
-
He that is without
sin among you, let him first cast a stone at
her.
-
Without sin = sinless =
nowhere else in the N.T.
-
At = upon.
8 And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground.
-
Wrote = The curses, as before
9 And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went
out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus
was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.
-
Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in
the midst.
-
Convicted = By the manifestation of the Lord's
knowledge of what was in their hearts and of
what they were concealing for the purpose of
tempting Him.
-
At = from
-
Eldest = elders
-
Unto = as far as
-
John 8:46 Which of you convinceth me of sin? And
if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?
47 He that is of God heareth God's words: ye
therefore hear them not, because ye are not of
God.
10 When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said
unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned
thee?
-
But = except
-
No man = no one
11 She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn
thee: go, and sin no more.
-
She said, No man, Lord. And
Jesus said unto her, Neither do I
condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
-
Thee = He does not say "thy
sin"
-
He speaks judicially
-
First they didn't from the man, they just
brought the man
12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the
world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have
the light of life.
-
Walk with the Lord, Not as the world, of
darkness
-
I am the light of the
world
-
Then = Therefore
-
Again = refers to a subsequent occasion in "the
Treasury".
-
John 8:20 These words spake Jesus in the
treasury, as he taught in the temple: and no man
laid hands on him; for his hour was not yet
come.
-
I am = John 6:35
And Jesus said unto them,
I am the bread of life: he that cometh to
me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on
me shall never thirst.
-
John 9:5 As long as I am in the world,
I am the light of the
world.
-
John 10:7 Then said Jesus unto them again,
Verily, verily, I say unto you,
I am the door of the sheep.
8 All that ever came before me are thieves and
robbers: but the sheep did not hear them.
9 I am the door: by me if
any man enter in, he shall be saved, and
shall go in and out, and find pasture.
-
John 10:11 I am the good
shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his
life for the sheep.
-
John 11:25 Jesus said unto her,
I am the resurrection, and
the life: he that believeth in me, though
he were dead, yet shall he live:
26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me
shall never die. Believest thou this?
27 She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that
thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which
should come into the world.
-
John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him,
I am the way, the truth,
and the life: no man cometh unto the
Father, but by me.
-
John 15:1 I am the true
vine, and my Father
is the husbandman.
2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he
taketh away: and every branch that beareth
fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth
more fruit.
-
John 5:36 But I have greater witness than that
of John: for the works which the Father hath
given me to finish, the same works that I do,
bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent
me.
-
World = for its inhabitants without
distinction, implying others than Jews.
-
Not = in no wise
-
Shall have = not merely see it, but possess it
-
Life = the life
-
Life = the fountain of life
-
1 John 5:11 And this is the record, that God
hath given to us eternal life, and this life is
in his Son.
12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that
hath not the Son of God hath not life.
-
Psalms 36:8 They shall be abundantly satisfied
with the fatness of thy house; and thou shalt
make them drink of the river of thy pleasures.
9 For with thee is the fountain of life: in thy
light shall we see light.
10 O continue thy loving
13 The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest record of
thyself; thy record is not true.
-
What did the Pharisees said?
-
There record is not true
-
Do you want to follow Christ or The
tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and
not after Christ.
-
Colossians 2:8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit,
after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not
after Christ.
-
Bearest record = bear witness
-
Of = concerning.
14 Jesus answered and said unto them, Though I bear record of myself,
yet my record is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but
ye cannot tell whence I come, and whither I go.
-
Though = Even if
-
Know = John 1:26 John answered them, saying, I
baptize with water: but there standeth one among
you, whom ye know not.
-
Cannot tell = know
-
And = or
15 Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man.
-
Man always wanted to take God's place, This is
why we are in this world age.
-
After = according to
16 And yet if I judge, my judgment is true: for I am not alone, but I
and the Father that sent me.
17 It is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is
true.
-
John 7:49 But this people who knoweth not the
law are cursed.
-
It is . . . written = It has been and standeth
written.
Also . . . law = law also, your law
-
John 8:13 The Pharisees therefore said unto him,
Thou bearest record of thyself; thy record is
not true.
-
Two = Deuteronomy 19:16 If a false witness rise
up against any man to testify against him that
which is wrong;
17 Then both the men, between whom the
controversy is, shall stand before the Lord,
before the priests and the judges, which shall
be in those days;
18 And the judges shall make diligent
inquisition: and, behold, if the witness be a
false witness, and hath testified falsely
against his brother;
19 Then shall ye do unto him, as he had thought
to have done unto his brother: so shalt thou put
the evil away from among you.
18 I am one that bear witness of myself, and the Father that sent me
beareth witness of me.
-
Bear witness. Same as "bear record" in John 8:13
The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou
bearest record of thyself; thy record is not
true.
19 Then said they unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye
neither know me, nor my Father: if ye had known me, ye should have known
my Father also.
-
If = A true hypothesis
-
Should = would
20 These words spake Jesus in the treasury, as he taught in the temple:
and no man laid hands on him; for his hour was not yet come.
-
The treasury = A part of the Temple, in the
court of the women
-
As He taught = teaching
-
Laid hands = arrested
-
John 7:30 Then they sought to take him: but no
man laid hands on him, because his hour was not
yet come.
31 And many of the people believed on him, and
said, When Christ cometh, will he do more
miracles than these which this man hath done?
32 The Pharisees heard that the people murmured
such things concerning him; and the Pharisees
and the chief priests sent officers to take him.
21 Then said Jesus again unto them, I go my way, and ye shall seek me,
and shall die in your sins: whither I go, ye cannot come.
-
Go My way = withdraw Myself
-
Shall = will
-
Sins = sin = The sin of rejecting Him
-
Cannot = are not able to
22 Then said the Jews, Will he kill himself? because he saith, Whither I
go, ye cannot come.
-
Jews = A characteristic expression of this
Gospel, pointing to the consequences of their
rejection of Messiah, when they would be (Lo
Ammi = not My People): no longer regarded as
"Israel", but as "Jews", the name given them by
Gentiles.
-
The Jews = The tribe of Judah
-
The Pharisees =
Matthew 23:29 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!
because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the
righteous,
30 And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have
been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
31 Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that
ye are the children of them which killed the
prophets.
32 Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.
33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye
escape the damnation of hell?
34 Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and
scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some
of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to
city:
35 That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth,
from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias
son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the
altar.
36 Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.
37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest
them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy
children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye
would not!
-
Matthew 16:11
How is it that ye do not understand that I spake
it not to you concerning bread, that ye should
beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the
Sadducees?
-
Matthew 23:2 Saying, The scribes and the
Pharisees sit in Moses' seat:
-
Matthew 23:13
But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees,
hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven
against men: for ye neither go in yourselves,
neither suffer ye them that are entering to go
in.
-
Will He kill Himself? = Surely He will not kill
Himself?
23 And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are
of this world; I am not of this world.
24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye
believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.
25 Then said they unto him, Who art thou? And Jesus saith unto them,
Even the same that I said unto you from the beginning.
26 I have many things to say and to judge of you: but he that sent me is
true; and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him.
27 They understood not that he spake to them of the Father.
28 Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man,
then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as
my Father hath taught me, I speak these things.
29 And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone;
for I do always those things that please him.
30 As he spake these words, many believed on him.
31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue
in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
-
Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall
make you free
33 They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to
any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?
-
Were never.. any man = Have been in
bondage to no on I at any time.
-
Thus ignoring all historical facts. These were
"the Jews" who believed in Joh 8:31, and
thus proved themselves not "believers indeed".
-
John 8:31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue
in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed.
34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever
committeth sin is the servant of sin.
-
Verily, verily = Called forth by this
manifest misrepresentation of the truth.
-
John 1:51 And he saith unto him, Verily,
verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see
heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and
descending upon the Son of man.
-
Whosoever = Every one who.
-
Committeth = doeth or practiseth.
-
Sin = Not a single act, but a life of sin
itself. Same as "sin "in Joh 8:21Then
said Jesus again unto them, I go my way, and ye
shall seek me, and shall die in your sins:
whither I go, ye cannot come.
-
The servant = a bondservant.
35 And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son
abideth ever.
-
For ever = He may be sold or
manumitted.
-
The Son = Never used of believers
in this Gospel. This word is reserved for Christ
only.
-
Ever = for ever, as above
36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
-
Ye shall be free indeed = ye will be really free
indeed
37 I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my
word hath no place in you.
-
What's the subject of John 8?
-
Bible study hour = The
Kenites
-
Who are the
scribes and Pharisees?
-
They sit in the seat of Moses claiming to have
the law of Moses, but they want to kill Jesus
and the prophets of God.
-
John 7:19 Did
not Moses give you the law, and yet none
of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill
me?
-
John 8, Matthew 13, and Jeremiah 35 tells us
the scribes and Pharisees are of Satan's
seed.
-
Good reading Parable of Fig tree = Matthew 13
-
Matthew 23:13
But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees,
hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven
against men: for ye neither go in yourselves,
neither suffer ye them that are entering to go
in.
-
Jeremiah 35:11 But it came to
pass, when Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon came up into the land,
that we said, Come, and let us go to Jerusalem for fear
of the army of the Chaldeans, and for fear of the army
of the Syrians: so we dwell at Jerusalem.
-
The Kenites began to call
themselves Jews in Jeremiah 35:11
-
The Kenites claim to be the
Jews, but they are not, they are the
synagogue of Satan.
-
Revelation 2:9 I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty,
(but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say
they are Jews, and are not, but
are the synagogue of Satan.
-
The tribe of Judah = The Jews
-
Through David was the true birthright
through which Christ came.
-
The "key of David" is the knowledge
of the true genealogy of Christ as opposed to the genealogy of the
false Christ. (Matthew 13)
-
The key to David is to know who killed Jesus, it was not the
Jews.
-
The tares
are the
children of the devil, the Kenites (Matthew
13)
-
I know that ye are Abraham's seed = He
speak of the dignity of mind.
-
The dignity of their extraction admitted: "I
know that you are Abraham's seed, every one
knows it, and it is your honour."
-
He grants them what was true, and in what they
said that was false (that they were never in
bondage to any) he does not contradict them, for
he studied to profit them, and not to provoke
them, and therefore said that which would please
them: I know that you are Abraham's seed.
-
They boasted of their descent
from Abraham, as that which aggrandized their
names, and made them exceedingly honourable;
whereas really it did but aggravate their
crimes, and make them exceedingly sinful.
-
Out of their own mouths will he judge
vain-glorious hypocrites, who boast of their
parentage and education:
-
Are you Abraham's seed? Why then did you not
tread in the steps of his faith and obedience?
-
The inconsistency of their practice with this
dignity: But you seek to kill me.
-
They had attempted it several times, and were
now designing it, which quickly appeared (John
8:59), when they took up stones to cast at him.
-
Christ knows all the wickedness, not only which
men do, but which they seek, and design, and
endeavour to do.
-
To seek to kill any innocent man is a crime, but
to compass and imagine the death of him that was
King of kings was a crime the heinousness of
which we want words to express.
-
Genesis 3:20 And
Adam called his wife's name Eve;
because
she was the mother of all living.
-
She (Eve) was the mother of all living
= Because through Eve seed line, Christ would be born
-
Satan tried
to destroy the seed line in which Christ would be born.
-
Without God you are dead, Christ is the light =
everlasting life.
John 3:15
That whosoever
believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only
begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish,
but have everlasting life.
-
Satan =death
-
The reason of this inconsistency.
-
Why were they that were Abraham's seed so
very inveterate against Abraham's promised seed,
in whom they and all the families of the earth
should be blessed?
-
There are many that make a profession of
religion in whom the word of Christ has no
place; they will not allow it a place, for they
do not like it; Satan does all he can to
displace it; and other things possess the place
it should have in us.
-
Where the word of God has no place no good is to
be expected, for room is left there for all
wickedness.
-
If the unclean spirit find the heart empty of
Christ's word, he enters in, and dwells there.
-
Roman 9:7 Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children:
but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called.
-
The promise was made to
all of Abraham's seed but to those of Abraham
and Sarah's issue.
-
"In Isaac shall thy seed be called".
8 That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the
children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the
seed.
Notice in Verse 19 Ye
neither know me, nor my Father:
John 8:19 Then said they unto him, Where is thy
Father? Jesus answered, Ye
neither know me, nor my Father: if ye had known me, ye should have known
my Father also.
20 These words spake Jesus in the treasury, as he taught in the temple:
and no man laid hands on him; for his hour was not yet come.
21 Then said Jesus again unto them, I go my way, and ye shall seek me,
and shall die in your sins: whither I go, ye cannot come.
22 Then said the Jews, Will he kill himself? because he saith, Whither I
go, ye cannot come.
23 And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath;
I am from above:
ye are
of this world; I am not of this world.
24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for
if ye
believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.
38 I speak that which I have seen with My Father: and ye do that which
ye have seen with your father.
-
Notice the two Fathers = I have seen with
My Father
-
Ye do that which
ye have seen with your father
-
The song of Moses = Deuteronomy 32:31 For
their rock is not as our Rock, even our

-
Deuteronomy 32:32 For their vine is
of the vine of Sodom, and of the fields of
Gomorrah: their grapes are grapes of
gall, their clusters are bitter:
-
Deuteronomy 32:33 Their wine is
the poison of dragons, and the cruel venom of
asps.
-
Parable of fig tree = Matthew 13
-
Matthew 23:29 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!
because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the
righteous,
30 And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have
been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
31 Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that
ye are the children of them
which killed the prophet.
39 They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith
unto them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of
Abraham.
40 But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which
I have heard of God: this did not Abraham.
41 Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born
of fornication; we have one Father, even God.
-
Ye do the deeds of your father, Satan
42 Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father,
ye would love me: for
I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he
sent me.
43 Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my
word.
44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will
do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth,
because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of
his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
-
Ye are of your father the devil
-
He was a murderer, Cain
45 And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.
46 Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye
not believe me?
47 He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not,
because ye are not of God.
48 Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou
art a Samaritan, and hast a devil?
49 Jesus answered, I have not a devil; but I honour my Father, and ye do
dishonour me.
50 And I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth.
51 Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall
never see death.
52 Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that thou hast a devil.
Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my
saying, he shall never taste of death.
53 Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the
prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself?
54 Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my
Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God:
55 Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I
know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep
his saying.
56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was
glad.
57 Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and
hast thou seen Abraham?
58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham
was, I am.
59 Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and
went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed
by.
