Joshua 1 Now after the death of Moses the servant of the Lord it
came to pass, that the Lord spake unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses'
minister, saying,
-
Joshua in Hebrew means God the Saviour - Joshua
in Greek means Jesus
-
The great subject is the land, as that of the
Pentateuch was the people.
-
After the death of Moses, in the eleventh month
of fortieth year.
-
Moses is a type of law, Joshua of the Messiah
and the law is "until Christ"
-
Galatians 3:24 Wherefore the law was our
schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we
might be justified by faith.
2 Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan,
thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even
to the children of Israel.
-
Joshua appointment over the people.
-
Only the children that enter the promise land
-
Joshua and Caleb were the only two, that enter
the promise land in that generation under the
age of 20.
3 Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I
given unto you, as I said unto Moses.
-
The Lord tells Joshua, I'll be with you, as I
said unto Moses.
-
The promise was to Israel
4 From the wilderness and this Lebanon even unto the great river, the
river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and unto the great sea
toward the going down of the sun, shall be your coast.
5 There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of
thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail
thee, nor forsake thee.
-
The Lord tells Joshua, there shall not any man
be able to stand before thee all the days of thy
life.
-
This promise first made to Jacob.
-
Genesis 28:14 And thy seed shall be as the dust
of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to
the west, and to the east, and to the north, and
to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall
all the families of the earth be blessed.
15 And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep
thee in all places whither thou goest, and will
bring thee again into this land; for I will not
leave thee, until I have done that which I have
spoken to thee of.
16 And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he
said, Surely the Lord is in this place; and I
knew it not.
-
Passed on by Moses
-
Deuteronomy 31:5 And the Lord shall give them up
before your face, that ye may do unto them
according unto all the commandments which I have
commanded you.
6 Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor
be afraid of them: for the Lord thy God, he it
is that doth go with thee; he will not fail
thee, nor forsake thee.
-
Hebrew 13:5 Let your conversation be without
covetousness; and be content with such things as
ye have: for he hath said, I will never
leave thee, nor forsake thee.
6 Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou
divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to
give them.
-
This is the great subject of the book, divide
for an inheritance the land
-
There's a promise land in our generation, called
the Kingdom of Heaven (Revelation 21 and 22)
7 Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to
do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn
not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper
whithersoever thou goest.
-
God saying do according to all the law, be
strong and very courage
8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt
meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according
to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way
prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
-
God said, If you do not depart from the
law, I will be with you.
-
Meditate on God's word
9 Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not
afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee
whither so ever thou goest.
-
God saying, don't worry I will be with thee
10 Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people, saying,
11 Pass through the host, and command the people, saying, Prepare you
victuals; for within three days ye shall pass over this Jordan, to go into possess the land, which the Lord your God giveth you to possess it.
-
In three days, ye shall pass over this Jordan,
to go into possess the land, I'm going to give
it to you.
-
After forty years they are going into the
promised land
12 And to the Reubenites, and to the Gadites, and to half the tribe of
Manasseh, spake Joshua, saying,
13 Remember the word which Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you,
saying, The Lord your God hath given you rest, and hath given you this
land.
-
The Lord hath given you this land
14 Your wives, your little ones, and your cattle, shall remain in the
land which Moses gave you on this side Jordan; but ye shall pass before
your brethren armed, all the mighty men of valour, and help them;
15 Until the Lord have given your brethren rest, as he hath given you,
and they also have possessed the land which the Lord your God giveth
them: then ye shall return unto the land of your possession, and enjoy
it, which Moses the Lord's servant gave you on this side Jordan toward
the sun rising.
16 And they answered Joshua, saying, All that thou commandest us we will
do, and whithersoever thou sendest us, we will go.
-
They were ALL in agreement
17 According as we hearkened unto Moses in all things, so will we
hearken unto thee: only the Lord thy God be with thee, as he was with
Moses.
18 Whosoever he be that doth rebel against thy commandment, and will not
hearken unto thy words in all that thou commandest him, he shall be put
to death: only be strong and of a good courage.
-
Be strong and of a good courage
