Tongues,
Means Languages By The Holy Spirit or By A Translator All
Understood
What was spoken on Pentecost Day?
Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and
began to speak with
other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every
nation under heaven.
6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came
together, and were confounded, because
that every man heard them speak in
his own language.
They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and
began to speak with
other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Did it say, people heard and nobody understood? No it
said ALL understood in their own Language
Tongues = the tongue; by implication, a
language
There's two meaning to tongues = a language all
understood at the time of teaching
Pentecost Day = By the Holy Spirit = they were
all filled with the Holy Spirit, and
began to speak with
other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
God teaches you as you study His word through the Holy Spirit.
If your teaching and someone doesn't know your
language, always have someone that can
interrupt to them in their language
1 Corinthians 14:1 Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather
that ye may prophesy.
-
Teach the word of God, which gives people hope.
2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but
unto God:
for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
-
If your teaching and someone doesn't know your
language, always have someone that can
interrupt to them in their language
-
If you don't have an interrupter, there is no
reason for teaching
-
You got to speak the language they're speaking
or it's not doing anyone any good
3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and
comfort.
4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.
5 I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that
ye prophesied: for
greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except
he interpret, that the
church may receive edifying.
-
Tongues = Language
-
If someone speaks another language have an
interrupter
-
You can not help a church, if there is no one to
interrupt the word to all the people
-
If you don't have an interrupter, there is no
reason for teaching
6 Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit
you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by
prophesying, or by doctrine?
7 And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they
give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?
8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the
battle?
-
When you deliver the word, know what you are
talking about
-
If someone speaks another language have an
interrupter
-
To the battle = for war
9 So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how
shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.
-
Utter = give
-
Easy to be understand = intelligible
10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them
is without signification.
-
It may be = if it may be
-
Without = dumb
-
Acts 8:32 The place of the scripture which he
read was this, He was led as a sheep to the
slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his
shearer, so opened he not his mouth:
11 Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that
speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me.
-
Meaning = force
-
Barbarian = Acts 28:2 And the barbarous people shewed us no little
kindness: for they kindled a fire, and received us every one, because of
the present rain, and because of the cold.
-
Speaking in tongues = languages
-
Pentecost Day = When the disciples were deliver up, they spoke in
tongues, all understood. (Acts 2)
-
Acts 2:6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were
confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.
-
Every man heard them speak in his own language
-
If you here babel, you know it's not of God
7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold,
are not all these which speak Galilaeans?
8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?
Hear we every man in our own tongue
Today if you go into another country, what does the
Pastors do?
When you go into another country you get a translator to teach
the people or it's will not do you any good to teach.
They get someone to translate the language where they can
understand or it's will not do you any good to teach.
1 Corinthians 14:33 For God is not the author of
confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the
saints.
Hebrew 4:12 For the word of God is quick,
and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the
dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and
is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
-
His word, the truth is the two-edged
sword
-
Babylon, which comes from the
Hebrew word ''Babel'', means confusion.
-
This sword of truth is going to
cause present day Babylon to fall.
-
Because a lie cannot stand in front
of truth.
When you hear babel it's not of God, if someone
tells you to learn (speak in tongues (Babel) it's not of God)
Only God can teach you through the Holy Spirit which you would
understand.
John 14:26 But the
Comforter, which is the Holy Spirit, whom the
Father will send in my name, He shall teach you all things,
and bring all things to your remembrance,
whatsoever I have said unto you.
Mark 13:11 But when they shall lead
you, and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand what ye
shall speak, neither do ye premeditate: but whatsoever shall be
given you in that hour, that speak ye: for it is not ye that
speak, but the Holy Spirit.
For it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Spirit
=
What was spoken of on Pentecost Day? This is that which was spoken by
the prophet Joel.
God's very elect will be delivered up as the disciple
were in the last days (Matthew 24, Mark 13 and Luke 21)
Acts 2:1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one
accord in one place.
-
The day of Pentecost
-
All races were there
2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty
wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
-
A rushing mighty wind from heaven
3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it
sat upon each of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and
began to speak with
other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
-
They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and
began to speak with other tongues
5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every
nation under heaven.
6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were
confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.
-
Every man heard them speak in his own language
-
If you here baal, you know it's not of God
-
Man can not do this
7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold,
are not all these which speak Galilaeans?
8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?
-
Hear we every man in our own tongue
9 Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia,
and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia,
10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about
Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes,
11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the
wonderful works of God.
-
We do hear them speak in our tongues the
wonderful works of God
12 And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another,
What meaneth this?
13 Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine.
14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said
unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this
known unto you, and hearken to my words:
15 For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third
hour of the day.
16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;
-
This is that which was spoken by the prophet
Joel
17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God,
I will pour
out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall
prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall
dream dreams:
-
It shall come to pass in the last days, saith God
-
I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh..
your sons and your daughters
18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those
days of My Spirit; and they shall prophesy:
-
I will pour out in those days of my Spirit
-
Mark 13:11 But when they shall lead
you, and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand what ye
shall speak, neither do ye premeditate: but whatsoever shall be
given you in that hour, that speak ye: for it is not ye that
speak, but the Holy Spirit.
-
Did it say they will Babel?
-
It said they shall prophesy My Word
19 And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth
beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke:
-
I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs
in the earth beneath; blood, and fire
20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood,
before that great and notable day of the Lord come:
-
The moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come
21 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of
the Lord shall be saved.
-
Whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord
shall be saved
22 Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved
of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him
in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:
Acts 10:38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with
power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of
the devil; for God was with him.
39 And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of
the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree:
40 Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly;
41 Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even
to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead.
42 And He commanded us to preach unto the people, and
to testify that it
is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead.
43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through
his name
whosoever
believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.
44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Spirit fell on
all them which heard the word.
45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many
as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the
gift of the Holy Spirit.
46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and
magnify God. Then
answered Peter,
47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which
have received the Holy Spirit as well as we?
48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then
prayed they him to tarry certain days.
They shall speak with new tongues = the
tongue; by implication, a language
Verse 44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Spirit fell on
all them
which heard the word.
Now did they hear Peter speaking Babel or did they hear
what Peter said?
Acts 19:6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon
them, the Holy Spirit came on them; and
they spake with tongues, and
prophesied.
7 And all the men were about twelve.
8 And he went into the synagogue, and spake
boldly for the space of three months, disputing and
persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God.
Mark 16:9 Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he
appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven
devils.
10 And she went and told them that had been with him, as they
mourned and wept.
11 And they, when they had heard that he was alive, and had been
seen of her, believed not.
12 After that he appeared in another form unto two of them, as
they walked, and went into the country.
13 And they went and told it unto the residue: neither believed
they them.
14 Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat,
and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart,
because they believed not them which had seen him after he was
risen.
15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach
the gospel to every creature.
16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that
believeth not shall be damned.
17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name
shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
-
Cast out devils
-
New tongues = different in character = Act 2 =
With the Holy Spirit all will understand
-
Tongues = the tongue; by implication, a
language = By a Translator
18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly
thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick,
and they shall recover.
-
Song of Moses is a good start to see who these serpents are, and
their drink any deadly thing.
-
Deuteronomy 32:24 They shall be
burnt with hunger, and devoured with burning
heat, and with bitter destruction: I will also
send the teeth of beasts upon them, with the
poison of serpents of the dust.
-
Deuteronomy 32:33 Their wine is the
poison of dragons, and the cruel venom of asps.
- They go against God
- Who are the serpents?
- Matthew 23:33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape
the damnation of hell?
- Offspring of Serpent = The Generation of the fig tree = bad
figs
- Learn the parables of the fig trees
- What is their poison?
- Lies
- If you're serving God, and someone says something against
you, it's not going to hurt you.
- Why?
- Satan's children are going to mock you.
- Your character will not be destroyed
- Who is the dragon? Satan
- Satan's flood of lies.
- Serpent = Satan = represents deception = a deceitful
or treacherous person
- Revelation 12:15 And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as
a
flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the
flood.
- What comes out of your mouth?
- Their power is in their mouth.
16 And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her
mouth, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his
mouth.
17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make
war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God,
and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.
- Mark 16:17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my
name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
- Who are these serpents?
- Satan's Children
- What is their drink?
- Verse 32 - It's the confusion, Their lies
19 So then after
the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat
on the right hand of God.
20 And they went forth, and preached
everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with
signs following. Amen.
- God did not said, go pick up a snake or drink poison.
- God said, study my word.
-
The truth shall make you free,
Christ uses
symbolize like insects, water, wind,
trees, animals, horses, seasons, all of the nature itself, to
relate something to you because you can identify with the things
you can see.
- Luke 10:19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and
scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any
means hurt you.
- Revelation 9:3 And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the
earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have
power.
4 And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the
grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only
those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads.
5 And to
them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should
be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a
scorpion, when he striketh a man.
19 So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received
up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.
20 And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord
working with them, and confirming the word with signs following.
Amen.
1 Corinthians 14:12 Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may
excel to the edifying of the church.
-
Even so ye = so ye also
-
Spiritual gifts = Here put for the operations of
the Holy Spirit as in verse 2.
-
Excel = abound
-
The Church = makes up the many members body
-
Do what's right for the Church
-
Zealous = to have warmth of feeling
for or against
-
Zealous = Acts 21:20 And when they heard it,
they glorified the Lord, and said unto him, Thou
seest, brother, how many thousands of Jews there
are which believe; and they are all zealous of
the law:
13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may
interpret.
14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding
is unfruitful.
-
Verse
33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of
the saints.
-
Understanding = mind
-
Paul is saying, if your not going to teach where
people can understand = it's is unfruitful
15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the
understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the
understanding also.
-
Speak into people with your language only
-
Sing = Making melody
-
Ephesians 5:15 See then that ye walk
circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise
16 Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the
room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth
not what thou sayest?
-
If they don't know what's your saying, there no
sense in teaching
-
When = if
-
Occupieth = fills up
-
Matthew 13:14 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of
Esaias (Isaiah), which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not
understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive:
-
Question of Disciples, reason and because
-
The Prophet Isaiah, in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias
(Isaiah), which saith,
-
Isaiah 6:9 And he said, Go, and tell this
people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and
see ye indeed, but perceive not.
10 Make the heart of this people fat, and make
their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they
see with their eyes, and hear with their ears,
and understand with their heart, and convert,
and be healed.
-
Unlearned = Private as opposed to official
-
Acts 4:13 Now when they saw the boldness of
Peter and John, and perceived that they were
unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and
they took knowledge of them, that they had been
with Jesus.
17 For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.
-
Acts 27:35 And laid them down at the apostles'
feet: and distribution was made unto every man
according as he had need.
18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:
-
Paul is saying, he knows more languages then
most people know
-
Thank = same as ''give thanks'' in verse 17
-
I speaking = speaking (as I do)
19 Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that
by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown
tongue.
-
Paul is saying, if they cannot understand,
you're wasting your time and their time
-
Had rather = desire to
20 Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children,
but in understanding be men.
-
Be = become
-
Be ye children = act as babes
-
Malice = NT:2549 badness, evil, naughtiness,

speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the
Lord.
-
Reasons and cautions
-
Divine prediction
-
Study with understanding
-
Isaiah 28:9 Whom shall he teach knowledge? and
whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them
that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from
the breasts.
10 For precept must be upon precept, precept
upon precept; line upon line, line upon line;
here a little, and there a little:
-
John 10:34 Jesus answered them, Is it not
written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?
22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that
believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them
which believe.
-
Languages should means something
-
Deeper teaching, teach in their language
-
If you cannot teach their language, don't go
there
23 If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak
with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will
they not say that ye are mad?
-
It's liken to many people talking at the same
time, nobody knows what you're talking about
24 But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one
unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all:
-
One = any one
-
Convinced = Translation four times "convince",
once "convict, five times "rebuke", six times
"reprove" and once "tell a fault".
-
Matthew 18:15 Moreover if thy brother shall
trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault
between thee and him alone: if he shall hear
thee, thou hast gained thy brother.
16 But if he will not hear thee, then take with
thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two
or three witnesses every word may be
established.
17 And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it
unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the
church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man
and a publican.
18 Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall
bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and
whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be
loosed in heaven.
19 Again I say unto you, That if two of you
shall agree on earth as touching any thing that
they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my
Father which is in heaven.
20 For where two or three are gathered together
in my name, there am I in the midst of them.
-
Judged = discerned
25 And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on
his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.
-
Report = announcing, or declaring = With
understanding
-
In = among
-
Of a truth = indeed
-
John 8:36 If the Son therefore shall make you
free, ye shall be free indeed.
37 I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye
seek to kill me, because my word hath no place
in you.
26 How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a
psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an
interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.
-
Build the church up, For God is not the author
of confusing, verse 33
-
How = same as "What" verse 15
-
Every = each
-
Interpretation = 1 Corinthians 12:10
But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man
severally as he will.
27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by
three, and that by course; and let one interpret.
-
Unknown tongue = another language
-
Let there be an interpreter
-
Any man = any one, as in verse 24
-
By = according to
-
By course = in turn
28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let
him speak to himself, and to God.
-
If no interpreter, don't speak
29 Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge.
-
Judge = discern, or discriminate
30 If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his
peace.
-
Revealed = hold his peace = same as "keep
silence" in verse 28, 34
31 For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be
comforted.
32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.
-
Spirits = spiritual gifts as in verse 12
-
Subject to = under the control of their
possessors = so there was no warrant for the
scenes of excitement sometimes exhibited in
ancient, as well as in modern, days.
33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of
the saints.
-
God is not the author of confusion, but of peace
-
Luke 21:9 But when ye shall hear of wars and commotions, be
not terrified: for these things must first come to pass; but the
end is not by and by.
-
2nd
seal - When you hear of wars
and rumors of wars..
Don't worry.

He's saying,
What's the opposite of wars?

For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then
sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman

-
By and By Hebrew word # 2112 = as soon as, forthwith, immediately,
shortly, straightway
-
Acts 9:13 Then Ananias answered, Lord, I have
heard by many of this man, how much evil he hath
done to thy saints at Jerusalem:
34 Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto
them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the
law.
-
Your to keep silence why your pastor is
teaching, after church you can ask questions.
-
This goes for men or women
-
Joel 2:28 And it shall come to pass
afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon
all flesh; and your sons and your daughters
shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams,
your young men shall see visions:
-
Acts 2:17 And it shall come to pass in
the last days, saith God, I will pour
out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons
and your daughters shall prophesy, and your
young men shall see visions, and your old men
shall dream dreams:
18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I
will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and
they shall prophesy
-
Jeremiah 17:5
Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and
maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD.
35 And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it
is a shame for women to speak in the church.
-
Same as verse 34

Jeremiah 17:5
Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and
maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD.
36 What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only?
37 If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge
that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.
38 But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant.
39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.
-
