1 John 5:1 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.

  • What did it say?
  • Every one who believe that Jesus is the Christ is begotten of God
  • Begotten: (Ap 98)
  • When used of God it denotes His relationship to His "beloved Son"; and to those ("sons") who have been begotten (not "born", see note on (Matthew 1:1) into a new creation. It implies "sons" not "offspring", As in Acts 17:28, 29. These were "offspring", and were existing (Greek huparcho), as such, according to nature, on the ground of creation; not "sons" as being "begotten" into a new creation.
2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep His commandments.

3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.
  • Keep His Commandments = Keeps you alive = freedom = peace of mind
  • If you're doing your best, you will have peace of mind
  • Love that =  Keeping Hs commandments is a result of His love being shed abroad in our hearts
  • Romans 5:5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit which is given unto us.
  • We are never disappointed in our hope, because God's love floods in our hearts.
  • A gift from the Holy Spirit or the Comforter.
  • Even when we have this hope and faith, many of us fail to realize what this gift means.
  • It means we can lean on the Comforter, share our burdens and our disappointments with Him; whereby He will lift them from us, as was promised.
  • Keep: Matthew 19:17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.
  • Grievous = burden some
  • Acts 20:29 For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.
4 For whatsoever is born of God over cometh the world: and this is the victory that over cometh the world, even our faith.
  • For = Because
  • Hebrew 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
    7 By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.
    8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.
    9 By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:
    10 For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
    11 Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.
5 Who is he that over cometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?
  • Who will over cometh the world?
  • He that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God
  • You study God's word not man word
  • 1 John 3:6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.
  • They're habitually sinner
  • Test of abiding
  • Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel
  • Immanuel = God with us
  • But = Except
6 This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.
  • Witnesses to us that He has come
  • Came = Born of Mary = Bag of water
  • Blood = In the blood
  • The Spirit is truth = God Spirit
  • Verse 8 = And there are three that bear witness in earth, the spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.
  • In the combination of these two names = Also Water = Referring to His baptism, when witness was given to Him by the voice from heaven and the descent of the Spirit.
  • Matthew 3:16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:
    17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
  • John 1:31 And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.
    32 And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.
    33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Spirit.
  • Blood = In the blood
  • Lev 17:11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.
  • Romans 3:25  Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
    26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.
  • Matt 26:28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
  • 1 Peter 1:2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.
    3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
    4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,
    5 Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

  • (Ap 98) In the combination of these two names, the former is emphatic by its position, the second being subsidiary and explanatory. In the Gospels it means "Jesus the Messiah". In the Epistles it means Jesus Who humbled Himself but is now exalted and glorified as Christ. Care should be taken to note the various readings.

7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit: and these three are one.
  • These three are one =  The Father, The Word, and The Holy Spirit
  • Bear record = bear witness, as in verse 6 in heaven
  • The "Spirit, and the water" and omitting all the words from "in heaven" to "in earth"
  • Verse 8 Inclusive.
8 And there are three that bear witness in earth, the spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.

9 If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son.
  • 2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
  • Study God's word, don't listen to men
  • Testified = same as "bear witness" in verse 6
  • Of = concerning
10 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.
  • Believeth = believeth on, as above
  • Record = same as "witness" in verse 9
  • Gave = hath witnesssed
11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
  • Hath given = gave
  • Roman 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
  • Life = the life = verse 11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son
13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.
  • Belief in Christ
  • Have I written = I wrote
  • Unto = to
  • And may "even unto you that".
14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:
  • When you pray for something, always ask God, if it's be His will
15 And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.
  • Petitions = Matthew 7:7 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:
    8 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
16 If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.
  • For = concerning
  • There is only one unforgiveable sin, is when God's elect is deliver up and you refuse the Holy Spirit to speak through you.
  • Luke 12:10 And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Spirit it shall not be forgiven.
  • The unforgiveable sin, is when God's elect is deliver up and you refuse the Holy Spirit to speak through you.
  • You have to be one of God's elect for this to happen
  • Mark 13:9 But take heed to yourselves: for they shall deliver you up to councils; and in the synagogues (of Satan) ye shall be beaten (mocked): and ye shall be brought before rulers and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them.
  • 10 And the gospel must first be published among all nations.
    • 11 And when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates, and powers, take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say:
    12 For the Holy Spirit shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say.
17 All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.
  • Jeremiah 14:11 Then said the Lord unto me, Pray not for this people for their good.
    12 When they fast, I will not hear their cry; and when they offer burnt offering and an oblation, I will not accept them: but I will consume them by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence.
    13 Then said I, Ah, Lord God! behold, the prophets say unto them, Ye shall not see the sword, neither shall ye have famine; but I will give you assured peace in this place.
    14 Then the Lord said unto me, The prophets prophesy lies in my name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart.
    15 Therefore thus saith the Lord concerning the prophets that prophesy in my name, and I sent them not, yet they say, Sword and famine shall not be in this land; By sword and famine shall those prophets be consumed.
    16 And the people to whom they prophesy shall be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword; and they shall have none to bury them, them, their wives, nor their sons, nor their daughters: for I will pour their wickedness upon them.
18 We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.

19 And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.
  • Look at the world today.. what do you see?
  • Wickedness - the wicked one, as in verse 18.
  • Satan is the prince of this world. And the god of this age
  • John 14:30 Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.
  • Who is the prince of this world?
  • The prince of this world cometh, he hath nothing in me, It's Satan
  • 1 Corinthians 2:8 Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
  • 2 Corinthians 4:4 In whom the god of this world (Satan) hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.
  • John 12:30 Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes.
    31 Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.
  • In John 12:31 Christ refers to Satan as the prince of the world.
  • Daniel 10:13 But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia.

20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.
  • Witnesses in us that He has come
  • We know the truth, through His word
  • We are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ.
  • This is the true God, and eternal life
  • Is come = John 8:42 42 Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.
  • In the last refers, the two verbs are seen: "shall Come" and "will Come"
  • Understanding Greek Translation nine times "mind", once "imagination"
  • Luke 1:51 51 He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
  • Understanding here true = This refers to the Father
  • This also referring to the Father, the source of LIFE, which was manifested in HIS SON and is given to us through, and in Him verse 11, 12 above.
  • John 5: 26 For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;
    27 And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.
  • Romans 6:23 23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
  • 1 John 1:1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;
    • 2 (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)
21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.
  • Amen = That's the way it's going be
  • 2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
  • Study God's word, don't listen to men
  • Keep = guard as in Jude 24
  • An idol may not be a material one, but may consist in whatever a man looks to for help, apart from the Living God.
  • Ephesians 5:5 For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
