1 Kings 5
Book of Kings
This
Books of Kings begins with:
1. King David and ends with king of Babylon.
2.
Opens with Temple built, and closes with Temple burnt.
This book of Kings begins with David's first successor on the throne of his
kingdom, and ends with David's last successor released from the
house of the captivity.
Characters of all are tested by the standard David.
1 Kings 5:1 And Hiram king of Tyre sent his servants unto
Solomon; for he had heard that they had anointed him king in the
room of his father: for Hiram was ever a lover of David.
-
Lover = ally, Hebrews always at amity with the
Phoenicians. Never with Canaanites.
-
1 Kings 5:10 So Hiram gave Solomon cedar trees
and fir trees according to all his desire.
11 And Solomon gave Hiram twenty thousand
measures of wheat for food to his household, and
twenty measures of pure oil: thus gave Solomon
to Hiram year by year.
-
1 Kings 9:12 And Hiram came out from
Tyre to see the cities which Solomon
had given him; and they pleased him not.
13 And he said, What cities are these which thou
hast given me, my brother? And he called them
the land of Cabul unto this day.
14 And Hiram sent to the king sixscore talents
of gold.
15 And this is the reason of the levy which king
Solomon raised; for to build the house of the
Lord, and his own house, and Millo, and the wall
of Jerusalem, and Hazor, and Megiddo, and Gezer.
16 For Pharaoh king of Egypt had gone up, and
taken Gezer, and burnt it with fire, and slain
the Canaanites that dwelt in the city, and given
it for a present unto his daughter, Solomon's
wife.
-
2 Chronicles 2:3 And Solomon sent to Huram the king
of Tyre, saying, As thou didst deal with David
my father, and didst send him cedars to build
him an house to dwell therein, even so deal with
me.
4 Behold, I build an house to the name of the
Lord my God, to dedicate it to him, and to burn
before him sweet incense, and for the continual
shewbread, and for the burnt offerings morning
and evening, on the sabbaths, and on the new
moons, and on the solemn feasts of the Lord our
God. This is an ordinance for ever to Israel.
2 And Solomon sent to Hiram, saying,
3 Thou knowest how that David my father could not build an house
unto the name of the Lord his God for the wars which were about
him on every side, until the Lord put them under the soles of
his feet.
-
Could not = There were three reasons altogether:
-
(1) Not the time = 2 Samuel 7:5 Go and tell my
servant David, Thus saith the Lord, Shalt thou
build me an house for me to dwell in?
6 Whereas I have not dwelt in any house since
the time that I brought up the children of
Israel out of Egypt, even to this day, but have
walked in a tent and in a tabernacle.
7 In all the places wherein I have walked with
all the children of Israel spake I a word with
any of the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to
feed my people Israel, saying, Why build ye not
me an house of cedar?
8 Now therefore so shalt thou say unto my
servant David, Thus saith the Lord of hosts, I
took thee from the sheepcote, from following the
sheep, to be ruler over my people, over Israel:
9 And I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest,
and have cut off all thine enemies out of thy
sight, and have made thee a great name, like
unto the name of the great men that are in the
earth.
10 Moreover I will appoint a place for my people
Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell
in a place of their own, and move no more;
neither shall the children of wickedness afflict
them any more, as beforetime,
11 And as since the time that I commanded judges
to be over my people Israel, and have caused
thee to rest from all thine enemies. Also the
Lord telleth thee that he will make thee an
house.
-
1 Chronicles 22:4 Also cedar trees in abundance: for
the Zidonians and they of Tyre brought much
cedar wood to David.
5 And David said, Solomon my son
is young and tender, and the house that is to be
builded for the Lord must be exceeding
magnifical, of fame and of glory throughout
all countries: I will therefore
now make preparation for it. So David prepared
abundantly before his death.
6 Then he called for Solomon his son, and
charged him to build an house for the
Lord God of Israel
7 And David said to Solomon, My son, as for me,
it was in my mind to build an house unto the
name of the Lord my God:
-
2 Chronicles 6:6 But I have chosen Jerusalem,
that my name might be there;
and have chosen David to be over my
people Israel.
7 Now it was in the heart of David my
father to build an house for the name
of the Lord God of Israel.
8 But the Lord said to David my father,
Forasmuch as it was in thine heart to build an
house for my name, thou didst well in that it
was in thine heart:
-
(2) Not the opportunity = Luke 5:3 And he
entered into one of the ships, which was
Simon's, and prayed him that he would thrust out
a little from the land. And he sat down, and
taught the people out of the ship.
-
(3) Not the man = 1 Chron 22:8 But the word of
the Lord came to me, saying, Thou hast
shed blood abundantly, and hast made
great wars: thou shalt not build an
house unto my name, because thou hast shed much
blood upon the earth in my sight.
-
1 Chron 28:3 But God said unto me, Thou
shalt not build an house for my name,
because thou hast been a man of war, and hast
shed blood.
4 But now the Lord my God hath given me rest on every side, so
that there is neither adversary nor evil occurrent.
5 And, behold, I purpose to build an house unto the name of the
Lord my God, as the Lord spake unto David my father, saying, Thy
son, whom I will set upon thy throne in thy room, he shall build
an house unto my name.
6 Now therefore command thou that they hew me cedar trees out of
Lebanon; and my servants shall be with thy servants: and unto
thee will I give hire for thy servants according to all that
thou shalt appoint: for thou knowest that there is not among us
any that can skill to hew timber like unto the Sidonians.
7 And it came to pass, when Hiram heard the words of Solomon,
that he rejoiced greatly, and said, Blessed be the Lord this
day, which hath given unto David a wise son over this great
people.
8 And Hiram sent to Solomon, saying, I have considered the
things which thou sentest to me for: and I will do all thy
desire concerning timber of cedar, and concerning timber of fir.
-
Sent = wrote
-
2 Chron 2:11 Then Huram the king of Tyre
answered in writing, which he sent to Solomon,
Because the Lord hath loved his people, he hath
made thee king over them.
9 My servants shall bring them down from Lebanon unto the sea:
and I will convey them by sea in floats unto the place that thou
shalt appoint me, and will cause them to be discharged there,
and thou shalt receive them: and thou shalt accomplish my
desire, in giving food for my household.
-
Bring them down = Note the illustration in the
conversion of sinners.
-
Cut down from nature's standing; down through
the waters of death
-
Romans 6:11 Likewise reckon
ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin,
but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our
Lord.
-
Or, sin should not affect you or tempt you as
easily as before you chose to serve God.
-
Before finding their place in the temple of God
-
Eph 2:20 And are built upon the foundation of
the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself
being the chief corner stone;
21 In whom all the building fitly framed
together groweth unto an holy temple in the
Lord:
22 In whom ye also are builded together for an
habitation of God through the Spirit.
-
Same with the stones.
-
1 Kings 5:17 And the king commanded, and they
brought great stones, costly stones, and hewed
stones, to lay the foundation of the house.
10 So Hiram gave Solomon cedar trees and fir trees according to
all his desire.
-
Gave = continued to give
-
Psalms 45:12 And the daughter of Tyre shall be
there with a gift; even the rich among the
people shall intreat thy favour.
11 And Solomon gave Hiram twenty thousand measures of wheat for
food to his household, and twenty measures of pure oil: thus
gave Solomon to Hiram year by year.
-
Gave = Not the same as 2 Chron 2:10. That was
for Hiram's workmen in Lebanon.
-
This was for his royal household at Tyre.
-
2 Chronicle 2:10 And, behold, I will give to thy
servants, the hewers that cut timber, twenty
thousand measures of beaten wheat, and twenty
thousand measures of barley, and twenty thousand
baths of wine, and twenty thousand baths of oil.
-
Pure = bruised (as in a mortar), not crushed in
a press.
12 And the Lord gave Solomon wisdom, as he promised him: and
there was peace between Hiram and Solomon; and they two made a
league together.
-
As = according as
-
League = a covenant = For breaking which
Tyre was judged later.
-
Amos 1:9 Thus saith the Lord; For three
transgressions of Tyrus, and for four, I will
not turn away the punishment thereof; because
they delivered up the whole captivity to Edom,
and remembered not the brotherly covenant.
13 And king Solomon raised a levy out of all Israel; and the
levy was thirty thousand men.
-
Levy = tribute of men for free labour, not the
bond service.
-
1 Kings 9:21 Their children that were left after
them in the land, whom the children of Israel
also were not able utterly to destroy, upon
those did Solomon levy a tribute of bond service
unto this day.
22 But of the children of Israel did Solomon
make no bondmen: but they were men of war, and
his servants, and his princes, and his captains,
and rulers of his chariots, and his horsemen.
23 These were the chief of the officers that
were over Solomon's work, five hundred and
fifty, which bare rule over the people that
wrought in the work.
-
1 Kings 4:6 And Ahishar was over the household:
and Adoniram the son of Abda was over the
tribute.
7 And Solomon had twelve officers over all
Israel, which provided victuals for the king and
his household: each man his month in a year made
provision.
8 And these are their names: The son of Hur, in
mount Ephraim:
-
2 Samuel 20:24 And Adoram was over the tribute:
and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder:
25 And Sheva was scribe: and Zadok and Abiathar
were the priests:
26 And Ira also the Jairite was a chief ruler
about David.
-
Foretold in 1 Sam 8:16 And he will take your
menservants, and your maidservants, and your
goodliest young men, and your asses, and put
them to his work.
-
David employed forced service of resident
aliens.
-
1 Chronicles 22:2 And David commanded to gather
together the strangers that were in the land of
Israel; and he set masons to hew wrought stones
to build the house of God.
-
2 Samuel 12:31 And he brought forth the people that were therein, and put
them under saws, and under harrows of iron, and
under axes of iron, and made them pass through
the brickkiln: and thus did he unto all the
cities of the children of Ammon. So David and
all the people returned unto Jerusalem.
-
Put = appointed, appointed over, set
-
Genesis 2:8 And the Lord God planted a garden
eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom
he had formed.
-
1 Samuel 8:10 And Samuel told all the words of
the Lord unto the people that asked of him a
king.
11 And he said, This will be the manner of the
king that shall reign over you: He will take
your sons, and appoint them for himself, for his
chariots, and to be his horsemen; and some shall
run before his chariots.
12 And he will appoint him captains over
thousands, and captains over fifties; and will
set them to ear his ground, and to reap his
harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and
instruments of his chariots.
13 And he will take your daughters to be
confectionaries, and to be cooks, and to be
bakers.
14 And he will take your fields, and your
vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of
them, and give them to his servants.
15 And he will take the tenth of your seed, and
of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and
to his servants.
16 And he will take your menservants, and your
maidservants, and your goodliest young men, and
your asses, and put them to his work.
17 He will take the tenth of your sheep: and ye
shall be his servants.
18 And ye shall cry out in that day because of
your king which ye shall have chosen you; and
the Lord will not hear you in that day.
19 Nevertheless the people refused to obey the
voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will
have a king over us;
20 That we also may be like all the nations; and
that our king may judge us, and go out before
us, and fight our battles.
14 And he sent them to Lebanon ten thousand a month by courses:
a month they were in Lebanon, and two months at home: and
Adoniram was over the levy.
15 And Solomon had threescore and ten thousand that bare
burdens, and fourscore thousand hewers in the mountains;
16 Beside the chief of Solomon's officers which were over the
work, three thousand and three hundred, which ruled over the
people that wrought in the work.
17 And the king commanded, and they brought great stones, costly
stones, and hewed stones, to lay the foundation of the house.
-
Brought = quarried
-
Great stones = These stones illustrate the work
of conversion in the sinner.
-
Hewed out of nature's dark quarry, out and
carved for a place in the temple of glory.
-
Isaiah 51:1 Hearken to me, ye that follow after
righteousness, ye that seek the Lord: look unto
the rock whence ye are hewn, and to the hole of
the pit whence ye are digged.
2 Look unto Abraham your father, and unto Sarah
that bare you: for I called him alone, and
blessed him, and increased him.
-
Eph 2:20 And are built upon the foundation of
the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself
being the chief corner stone;
21 In whom all the building fitly framed
together groweth unto an holy temple in the
Lord:
22 In whom ye also are builded together for an
habitation of God through the Spirit.
18 And Solomon's builders and Hiram's builders did hew them, and
the stones quarers: so they prepared timber and stones to build
the house.
-
The stonesquarers = men of Gebal, or Giblites
-
Ezekiel 27:9 The ancients of Gebal and the wise
men thereof were in thee thy calkers: all the
ships of the sea with their mariners were in
thee to occupy thy merchandise.
10 They of Persia and of Lud and of Phut
were in thine army, thy men of war: they hanged
the shield and helmet in thee; they set forth
thy comeliness.
-
Now Jubeil, forty miles north of Sidon.
-
Psalm 83:7 Gebal, and Ammon, and Amalek; the
Philistines with the inhabitants of Tyre;
8 Assur also is joined with them: they have
holpen the children of Lot. Selah.
9 Do unto them as unto the Midianites; as to
Sisera, as to Jabin, at the brook of Kison
-
Phoenician masons" marks still visible on them.
• Exactly 2520 years from the exile
of Benjamin, Iceland became an independent nation.
•
The first tribe to be
conquered by the Assyrians was Manasseh,
in 745 B.C. Exactly 2520 years later America became a nation on July 4, 1776.
(Leviticus. 26: 28-46) God warned Israel that if they persisted in continually
breaking His Laws, not only would curses come upon them.
He would punish them for seven times, (a time being 360 years, seven times would
be 2520 years) and would banish them from the land of Palestine and scatter them
among the heathens (like lost sheep)
