2 Corinthians 2

2 Corinthians 2

2 Corinthians 2:1 But I determined this with myself, that I would not come again to you in heaviness.
  • I determined = judged, or decided
  • Heaviness = sorrow or grief, as verses 3, 7
2 For if I make you sorry, who is he then that maketh me glad, but the same which is made sorry by me?
  • Make = sorry = grieve translation "grieve" or "cause grief" as in verse 4, 5
3 And I wrote this same unto you, lest, when I came, I should have sorrow from them of whom I ought to rejoice; having confidence in you all, that my joy is the joy of you all.
  • Lest = in order that not sorrow, verse 1
4 For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears; not that ye should be grieved, but that ye might know the love which I have more abundantly unto you.
  • Affliction = Not by man, but called by Jesus
  • 1 Corinthians 1:4 I thank my God always on your behalf, for the grace of God which is given you by Jesus Christ.
  • Anguish = straitening or distress
  • Luke 21:25 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;
  • That = in order that
  • Much abundantly = Don't go out and start your own religion = Teach God's word
  • 1 Corinthians 1:12 Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ.
5 But if any have caused grief, he hath not grieved me, but in part: that I may not overcharge you all.
  • Paul is saying, The grief has come from a part of you who have been led away
  • Overcharge = lay a burden, or press heavily, upon
  • 1 Thessalonians 2:9 For ye remember, brethren, our labour and travail: for labouring night and day, because we would not be chargeable unto any of you, we preached unto you the gospel of God.
  • Not wanting to be an expense to them.
  • 2 Thessalonians 3:8 Neither did we eat any man's bread for nought; but wrought with labour and travail night and day, that we might not be chargeable to any of you:
  • We sponged on no one, but worked for our keep.
6 Sufficient to such a man is this punishment, which was inflicted of many.
  • All stood with me, and straighten it out
  • Man = one as in verse 7
  • Punishment = censure
  • Many = the more, the majority
7 So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow.
  • 1 Corinthians 15:54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.
8 Wherefore I beseech you that ye would confirm your love toward him.
  • Confirm = ratify with authority
  • Galatians 1:3 Grace be to you and peace from God the Father, and from our Lord Jesus Christ,
4 Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:
  • Galatians 1:15 But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother's womb, and called me by his grace.
9 For to this end also did I write, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye be obedient in all things.
  • To this end = for this
10 To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ;
  • I forgive also = I also forgive for your sakes
  • Person = face to face or presence
11 Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.
  • Lest Satan should get an advantage of us = this is how Satan works, Satan is like a snake
  • If Satan can keep you upset, your not doing your best =  teaching God's word
12 Furthermore, when I came to Troas to preach Christ's gospel, and a door was opened unto me of the Lord,
  • To preach Christ's gospel = for the gospel of the Messiah
  • Door = was opened unto me of the Lord
  • 1 Corinthians 16:9 For a great door and effectual is opened unto me, and there are many adversaries.
  • God teaches us in a manner that makes His word simple to understand, to those who are willing to invite Him into your life.
As Jesus taught in Revelation 3:20, "Behold I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear My voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with Me."
Note that action is required on our part. We must be willing to open the door and hear His voice with understanding. To "sup" means to share deeper truths.
13 I had no rest in my spirit, because I found not Titus my brother: but taking my leave of them, I went from thence into Macedonia.

14 Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.
  • Causeth us to triumph = leadeth us in triumph, or triumphs over us
  • Colossian 2:15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.
  • Only in these two places. Paul was a captive won by grace.
  • In a Roman triumph there were captives destined to be spared and captives destined to death. as in verse 16
  • Paul gave evidence of the wisdom which dwelt in Him
  • Colossians 2:3 In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
  • In his own conversion, As well as in his preaching.
  • 1 Timothy 1:16 Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.
15 For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish:
  • We are unto God a sweet savour of Christ
  • We're suppose to be planting seeds, even if your teaching, touch Love
16 To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?
  • Eve was the Mother of all living, because through her seed = Christ was born
17 For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ.
  • Corrupt = Thy wine- seller mix the wine with water = adulterate
  • For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God
  • Be willing to help people, at all time
