Exodus 17
Exodus 17:1 And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from
the wilderness of Sin, after their journeys, according to the commandment of the
Lord, and pitched in Rephidim: and there was no water for the people to drink.
2 Wherefore the people did chide with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may
drink. And Moses said unto them, Why chide ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt the
Lord?
-
Chide = Murmuring was good policy.
-
They would
not "dig" (as at Beer and Elim) = to beg they
were not ashamed.
-
Tempt = put to the proof
3 And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against
Moses, and said, Wherefore is this that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt, to
kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?
4 And Moses cried unto the Lord, saying, What shall I do unto this people? they
be almost ready to stone me.
-
They be almost ready = Hebrew "yet a little and
they will".
-
Moses, David, Jeremiah, Stephen, Paul, and the
Lord Jesus suffered from stoning or its
threatening.
-
They were ready to stone Moses
5 And the Lord said unto Moses, Go on before the people, and take with thee of
the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in
thine hand, and go.
6 Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt
smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink.
And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.
-
Rock = Jacob Pillar = stone of destiny

Zech 13:7 Awake, O sword, against my shepherd,
and against the man that is my fellow, saith the
Lord of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep
shall be scattered: and I will turn mine hand
upon the little ones.
8 And it shall come to pass, that in all the
land, saith the Lord, two parts therein shall be
cut off and die; but the third shall be left
therein.
9 And I will bring the third part through the
fire, and will refine them as silver is refined,
and will try them as gold is tried: they shall
call on my name, and I will hear them: I will
say, It is my people: and they shall say, The
Lord is my God.
-
Smite = Smitten only once
-
God on the Rock = God in Christ
-
2 Cor 5:19 To wit, that God was in Christ,

their trespasses unto them; and hath committed
unto us the word of reconciliation.
-
No water till smitten water
-
Psalms 78:20 Behold, he smote the rock, that the
waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed;
can he give bread also? can he provide flesh for
his people?
21 Therefore the Lord heard this, and was wroth:
so a fire was kindled against Jacob, and anger
also came up against Israel;
22 Because they believed not in God,
and trusted not in His salvation:
-
John 7:38 He that believeth on me, as the
scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow
rivers of living water.
39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they
that believe on him should receive: for the Holy
Spirit was not yet given; because that Jesus was
not yet glorified.)
-
Water from the rock.
-
Fire out of the rock

Then the angel of the Lord departed out of his
sight.
-

of the earth, that he might eat the increase of
the fields; and he made him to suck honey out of
the rock, and oil out of the flinty rock;
14 Butter of kine, and milk of sheep, with fat
of lambs, and rams of the breed of Bashan, and
goats, with the fat of kidneys of wheat; and
thou didst drink the pure blood of the grape.

one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady
until the going down of the sun.

Zechariah 4:3
And two olive trees by it,
one upon the right side of the
bowl, and the other upon the left side
thereof.
4 So I answered and spake to the angel that
talked with me, saying, What are these, my lord?
5 Then the angel that talked with me answered
and said unto me, Knowest thou not what these
be? And I said, No, my lord.
6 Then he answered and spake unto me, saying,
This is the word of the Lord unto
Zerubbabel, saying, Not by
might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the
Lord of hosts.
7 Who art thou, O great mountain? before
Zerubbabel thou shalt become a plain: and he
shall bring forth the headstone
thereof with shoutings, crying, Grace, grace
unto it.
8 Moreover the word of the Lord came unto me,
saying,
9 The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the
foundation of this house; his hands
shall also finish it; and thou shalt know that
the Lord of hosts hath sent me unto you.

an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To
him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and
will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name
written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.
Sword of my mouth = The word of God
He shall bring forth the
headstone =
Christ
1 Peter 2:4 To whom coming, as unto a
living stone, disallowed indeed of men,
but chosen of God, and
precious,
5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built
up a spiritual house, an holy
priesthood, to offer up spiritual
sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus
Christ.
6 Wherefore also it is contained in the
scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief
corner stone, elect, precious: and he
that believeth on him shall not be confounded.
7 Unto you therefore which believe he is
precious: but unto them which be disobedient,
the stone which the builders disallowed, the
same is made the head of the corner,
8 And a stone of stumbling, and a rock
of offence, even to them which stumble
at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also
they were appointed.
9 But ye are a chosen generation, a
royal priesthood, an holy nation, a
peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the
praises of him who hath called you out of
darkness into his marvellous light:
10 Which in time past were not a people, but
are now the people of God:
which had not obtained mercy, but now have
obtained mercy.
11 Dearly beloved, I beseech you as
strangers and pilgrims, abstain from
fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;
13 And Joshua discomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.
14 And the Lord said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book, and
rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.
15 And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovah-nissi:
16 For he said, Because the Lord hath sworn that the Lord will have war with
Amalek from generation to generation.

(Leviticus. 26: 28-46) God warned Israel that if they persisted in continually
breaking His Laws, not only would curses come upon them.
He would punish them for seven times, (a time being 360 years, seven times would
be 2520 years) and would banish them from the land of Palestine and scatter them
among the heathens (like lost sheep)
