Numbers 21
Numbers 21:1 And when king Arad the Canaanite, which dwelt in the south,
heard tell that Israel came by the way of the spies; then he fought
against Israel, and took some of them prisoners.
2 And Israel vowed a vow unto the Lord, and said, If thou wilt indeed
deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their
cities.
-
The first thing you need to do before you go into war is get right
with God.
3 And the Lord hearkened to the voice of Israel, and delivered up the
Canaanites; and they utterly destroyed them and their cities: and he
called the name of the place Hormah.
-
Lord hearkened to the voice of Israel, and delivered up the
Canaanites. Who done this?
God
4 And they journeyed from mount Hor by the way of the Red sea, to
compass the land of Edom: and the soul of the people was much
discouraged because of the way.
5 And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye
brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no
bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loatheth this light
bread.
-
People speaking against God and Moses again,
complaining, just like today.
6 And the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and
they bit the
people; and much people of Israel died.
-
The Lord is fed up with these people,
because of their complaining
7 Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, for we
have spoken against the Lord, and against thee; pray unto the Lord, that
he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people.
-
Now they want Moses to pray and help them
8 And the Lord said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it
upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten,
when he looketh upon it, shall live.
-
The Lord wanted to know how much faith they had.
-
These people didn't want to go into the promise
land, they wanted to go back to Egypt.
-
John 3:12 If I have told you earthly things, and
ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell
you of heavenly things?
13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he
that came down from heaven, even the Son of man
which is in heaven.
14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the
wilderness, even so must the Son of man be
lifted up:
15 That whosoever believeth in him should not
perish, but have eternal life.
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his
only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in
him should not perish, but have everlasting
life.
17 For God sent not his Son into the world to
condemn the world; but that the world through
him might be saved.
18 He that believeth on him is not condemned:
but he that believeth not is condemned already,
because he hath not believed in the name of the
only begotten Son of God.
19 And this is the condemnation, that light is
come into the world, and men loved darkness
rather than light, because their deeds were
evil.
20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the
light, neither cometh to the light, lest his
deeds should be reproved.
9 And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came
to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the
serpent of brass, he lived.
-
If they had faith, they lived.
-
If they didn't have faith, they died
10 And the children of Israel set forward, and pitched in Oboth.
11 And they journeyed from Oboth, and pitched at Ije-abarim, in the
wilderness which is before Moab, toward the sun rising.
-
Moab were the sons of Lots, by the two daughters
-
God told the children not to fight with them
12 From thence they removed, and pitched in the valley of Zared.
13 From thence they removed, and pitched on the other side of Arnon,
which is in the wilderness that cometh out of the coasts of the
Amorites: for Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the
Amorites.
-
Coasts = border
-
Amorites were the Kenites
-
Amorites took this land from Moabs
14 Wherefore it is said in the book of the wars of the Lord, What he did
in the Red sea, and in the brooks of Arnon,
-
The older generation were getting old, some have
died.
-
Here's the younger generation.
15 And at the stream of the brooks that goeth down to the dwelling of Ar,
and lieth upon the border of Moab.
16 And from thence they went to Beer: that is the well whereof the Lord
spake unto Moses, Gather the people together, and I will give them
water.
-
Beer = Well
-
The Lord gave them water, but they had to do the
work
-
This is the last time God brought water from the rock
17 Then Israel sang this song, Spring up, O well; sing ye unto it:
18 The princes digged the well, the nobles of the people digged it, by
the direction of the lawgiver, with their staves. And from the
wilderness they went to Mattanah:
-
This time, The Lord going to give them water,
but they are going to have to work for it.
-
Here we see God blessing the younger generation.
-
This happened after 40 years.
-
Numbers 14:29 Your carcases shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were
numbered of you, according to your whole number, from
twenty years old
and upward, which have murmured against me
19 And from Mattanah to Nahaliel: and from Nahaliel to Bamoth:
20 And from Bamoth in the valley, that is in the country of Moab, to the
top of Pisgah, which looketh toward Jeshimon.
-
Moses looketh toward the promise land, but Moses
couldn't go into the promise land.
-
Moses could see the promise land, but not enter
into it.
-
Numbers 20:24 Aaron and Moses shall not enter
into the promise land, Because ye rebelled
against my word at the water of Meribah.
21 And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, saying,
-
They are going to ask to pass their land, unto
Sihon king of the Amorites
22 Let me pass through thy land: we will not turn into the fields, or
into the vineyards; we will not drink of the waters of the well: but we
will go along by the king's high way, until we be past thy borders.
-
They are asking in peace to go through their
land.
23 And Sihon would not suffer Israel to pass through his border: but
Sihon gathered all his people together, and went out against Israel into
the wilderness: and he came to Jahaz, and fought against Israel.
24 And Israel smote him with the edge of the sword, and possessed his
land from Arnon unto Jabbok, even unto the children of Ammon: for the
border of the children of Ammon was strong.
-
This was Moab lands.
-
Judges 11:21 And the Lord God of Israel
delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand
of Israel, and they smote them: so Israel
possessed all the land of the Amorites, the
inhabitants of that country.
22 And they possessed all the coasts of the
Amorites, from Arnon even unto Jabbok, and from
the wilderness even unto Jordan.
23 So now the Lord God of Israel hath
dispossessed the Amorites from before his people
Israel, and shouldest thou possess it?
25 And Israel took all these cities: and Israel dwelt in all the cities
of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all the villages thereof.
-
Israel took all these cities- Israel dwelt
in all the cities of the Amorites
26 For Heshbon was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who had
fought against the former king of Moab, and taken all his land out of
his hand, even unto Arnon.
27 Wherefore they that speak in proverbs say, Come into Heshbon, let the
city of Sihon be built and prepared:
28 For there is a fire gone out of Heshbon, a flame from the city of
Sihon: it hath consumed Ar of Moab, and the lords of the high places of
Arnon.
29 Woe to thee, Moab! thou art undone, O people of Chemosh: he hath
given his sons that escaped, and his daughters, into captivity unto
Sihon king of the Amorites.
-
Chemosh = Moab god = they passed their children
through fire
-
Judges 11:13 And the king of the children of
Ammon answered unto the messengers of Jephthah,
Because Israel took away my land, when they came
up out of Egypt, from Arnon even unto Jabbok,
and unto Jordan: now therefore restore those
lands again peaceably.
30 We have shot at them; Heshbon is perished even unto Dibon, and we
have laid them waste even unto Nophah, which reacheth unto Medeba.
-
Israel had the victory over the Amorites
31 Thus Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorites.
32 And Moses sent to spy out Jaazer, and they took the villages thereof,
and drove out the Amorites that were there.
33 And they turned and went up by the way of Bashan: and Og the king of
Bashan went out against them, he, and all his people, to the battle at
Edrei.
-
Deut 3:1 Then we turned, and went up the way to
Bashan: and Og the king of Bashan came out
against us, he and all his people, to battle at
Edrei.
2 And the Lord said unto me, Fear him not: for I
will deliver him, and all his people, and his
land, into thy hand; and thou shalt do unto him
as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites,
which dwelt at Heshbon.
3 So the Lord our God delivered into our hands
Og also, the king of Bashan, and all his people:
and we smote him until none was left to him
remaining.
4 And we took all his cities at that time, there
was not a city which we took not from them,
threescore cities, all the region of Argob, the
kingdom of Og in Bashan.
5 All these cities were fenced with high walls,
gates, and bars; beside unwalled towns a great
many.
6 And we utterly destroyed them, as we did unto
Sihon king of Heshbon, utterly destroying the
men, women, and children, of every city.
34 And the Lord said unto Moses, Fear him not: for I have delivered him
into thy hand, and all his people, and his land; and thou shalt do to
him as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites, which dwelt at
Heshbon.
35 So they smote him, and his sons, and all his people, until there was
none left him alive: and they possessed his land.
