CONSTELLATION CAPRICORNUS,  The Sea Goat

Consists of 51 stars: three of the 3rd magnitude: three of the 4th, etc.

In all the ancient zodiacs, this picture is shown as a fallen and dying goat With the tall of a fish - half goat and half fish. One leg of the goat is doubled under his body and the other is powerless to lift him up. The tail of the fish, on the other hand, seems to be full of vigor and life.

Capricornus is the Latin name for this constellation and means not only "goat" but "atonement".

In Zodiac of Denderah and Esneh, Hu-penius = the place of the sacrifice.

Its Hebrew name is Gedi, meaning "the kid" or "cut off".

The major star (in the horn) is named AI Gedi meaning "the kid" or "goat".

Other stars have the same meaning. Deneb AL Gedi, the sacrifice cometh; the sacrifice of the kid.

Ma 'asad, "the slaying".

Sa' ad al Naschira, "the record of the cutting off".

In this constellation the thought, expressed, is the "atoning sacrifice". In the Scriptures, the goat is a sacrificial animal. Aaron "took the goat... and slew it, and offered it for sin"(Lev.9:15). And of the goat of the "sin-offering", Moses said:" it is most holy, and God hath given it you to bear the iniquity of the congregation, to make atonement for them before the Lord" (Lev. 10:17). This was one of two goats. The other was not sacrificed, "and he shall let go the goat in the wilderness" (Lev. 16:22).

The dying goat is comparable with the falling and dying of Christ as the sin-offering referred to in the sign Hercules. Christ "was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities"(Isaiah 53:5). "He was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken" (Isaiah 53:8).

The living fish proceeding from the dying goat pictures a mystic procreation and a bringing forth. That which is brought forth is a fish, the familiar and well understood symbol of Jesus Christ. In the name and titles of the Seed of the woman - "Jesus Christ, the Son of God, our Saviour" - the initials in Greek form a name which signifies a fish.

The pagan myths concerning this constellation are many and varied. Pan and Bacchus are both connected to Capricornus, as well as Oannes, the half-fish god of the Babylonians and Dagon, the half-fish god of the Philistines. According to Philo, the name "Dagon" means "fruitfulness, the seed-producing". Dagon was to the Philistines, the same as Horus was to the Egyptians, having a human form in place of the goat. He was worshipped as the god of husbandry; the god of seeds and harvests. The Babylonians also referred to Capricornus as the "Father of Light" and sometimes identified him with their culture-god Ea who came to earth to benefit mankind.

In spite of such paganized and corrupted paraphrasing, the original primeval conception shines through; of Christ, Redeemer and Savior, fallen and dying in the Goat, but producing the living fish, the "great multitude, which no man could number"(Revelation 7:9)

These are the redeemed that shall obtain eternal life through the death of their Redeemer.

The lesser constellations in this sign also reveal a prophetic knowledge which only He possessed, knowing that in the ''fulness of the time ... God sent forth His Son ... to redeem them that were under the law"(Gal. 4:4-5).

The Sign Capricornus  The Sea Goat, The goat of atonement slain for the redeemed
(from The Witness of the Stars, by E. W. Bullinger)

It is most noteworthy that this Second Book opens with the Goat , and closes with the Ram: two animals of sacrifice; while the two middle chapters are both connected with fishes. The reason for this we shall see as we proceed.

Both are combined in the first chapter, or "Sign" of Capricornus.

In all the ancient Zodiacs, or Planispheres, we find a goat with a fish's tail. In the Zodiacs of Denderah and Esneh, in Egypt, it is half-goat and half-fish, and it is there called Hu-penius, which means the place of the sacrifice.

In the Indian Zodiac it is a goat passant traversed by a fish.

There can be no doubt as to the significance of this sign.

In the Goat we have the Atoning Sacrifice, in the Fish we have the people for whom the atonement is made. When we come to the sign PISCES we shall see more clearly that it points to the multitudes of the redeemed host.

The Goat is bowing its head as though falling down in death. The right leg is folded underneath the body, and he seems unable to rise with the left. The tail of the fish, on the other hand, seems to be full of vigour and life.

The Hebrew name of the sign is Gedi, the kid or cut off, the same as the Arabic Al Gedi. CAPRICORNUS is merely the modern (Latin) name of the sign, and means goat.

There are 51 stars in the sign, three of which are of the 3rd magnitude, three of the 4th, etc. Five are remarkable stars, a and b in the horn and head, and the remaining three g, d and e, in the fishy tail. The star a is named Al Gedi, the kid or goat, while the star d is called Deneb Al Gedi, the sacrifice cometh.

Other star-names in the sign are Dabih (Syriac), the sacrifice slain; Al Dabik and Al Dehabeh (Arabic) have the same meaning; Ma'asad, the slaying; Sa'ad al Naschira, the record of the cutting off.

Is not this exactly in accord with the Scriptures of truth? There were two goats! Of "the goat of the sin-offering" it is written, "God hath given it to you to bear the iniquity of the congregation, to make atonement for them before the LORD" (Lev 10:16,17): of the other goat, which was not slain, "he shall let it go into the wilderness" (Lev 16:22). Here is death and resurrection. Christ was "wounded for our transgressions, and bruised for our iniquities." "For the transgression of MY PEOPLE was He stricken" (Isaiah 53). He laid down His life for the sheep.

In the first chapter of the First Book we had the same Blessed One presented as "a corn of wheat." Here we see Him come to "die," and hence not abiding alone, but bringing forth "much fruit" (John 12:24). The living fish proceeds from the dying goat, and yet they form only one body. That picture, which has no parallel in nature, has a perfectly true counter part in grace; and "a great multitude, which no man can number," have been redeemed and shall obtain eternal life through the death of their Redeemer.

John 12:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.

25 He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.

26 If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.

Astronomers confess that the perverted legends of the Greeks give but "a lame account" of this sign, "and it offers no illustration of its ancient origin."

Its ancient origin reveals a prophetic knowledge, which only He possessed who knew that in "the fulness of time" He would send forth His Son.

We now come to the three constellations which give us three pictures setting forth the death of this Sacrifice and of His living again.

SAGITTA (The Arrow) The arrow of God sent forth

AQUILA (The Eagle) The smitten one falling

DELPHINUS (The Dolphin) The dead one rising again

Exactly 2520 years from the exile of Benjamin, Iceland became an independent nation.

The first tribe to be conquered by the Assyrians was Manasseh, in 745 B.C. Exactly 2520 years later America became a nation on July 4, 1776.

(Leviticus. 26: 28-46) God warned Israel that if they persisted in continually breaking His Laws, not only would curses come upon them.

He would punish them for seven times, (a time being 360 years, seven times would be 2520 years) and would banish them from the land of Palestine and scatter them among the heathens (like lost sheep)
