1 Samuel 11:1 Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against
Jabesh-Gilead: and all the men of Jabesh said unto Nahash, Make a covenant with
us, and we will serve thee.
-
Judges 10:7 And the anger of the LORD was
hot against Israel, and he sold them into the
hands of the Philistines, and into the hands of
the children of Ammon.
-
The men = Those who had not obeyed the summons
of were extinguished, and their daughters
given to remnant of Benjamin.
-
This gave them a claim on Saul, who was a
Benjamite.
-
Judges 21:8 And they said, What one is there of
the tribes of Israel that came not up to Mizpeh
to the Lord? And, behold, there came none to the
camp from Jabesh-gilead to the assembly.
-
Ammon, a son of Lot; also his posterity and
their country: Ammon, Ammonites.
-
Nahash = a snake (from its hiss): serpent
-
Jabesh = a region East of the Jordan; Gilead,
Gileadite.
2 And Nahash the Ammonite answered them, On this condition will I make a
covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it for a
reproach upon all Israel.
-
Right eyes = As the shield covered the
left eye, the right was necessary for seeing.
-
The loss of it incapacitated men from fighting.
3 And the elders of Jabesh said unto him, Give us seven days' respite, that we
may send messengers unto all the coasts of Israel: and then, if there be no man
to save us, we will come out to thee.
-
Coasts = borders
-
Man to save us = saviour
4 Then came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul, and told the tidings in the ears
of the people: and all the people lifted up their voices, and wept.
5 And, behold, Saul came after the herd out of the field; and Saul said, What
aileth the people that they weep? And they told him the tidings of the men of
Jabesh.
6 And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his
anger was kindled greatly.
7 And he took a yoke of oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout
all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whosoever cometh
not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And
the fear of the Lord fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.
8 And when he numbered them in Bezek, the children of Israel were three hundred
thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.
-
Judges 1:4 And Judah went up; and the LORD
delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into
their hand: and they slew of them in Bezek ten
thousand men.
-
5 And they found Adoni-bezek in Bezek:
and they fought against him, and they slew the
Canaanites and the Perizzites.
9 And they said unto the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of
Jabesh-gilead, To morrow, by that time the sun be hot, ye shall have help. And
the messengers came and shewed it to the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.
-
Help = salvation, or deliverance
10 Therefore the men of Jabesh said, To morrow we will come out unto you, and ye
shall do with us all that seemeth good unto you.
11 And it was so on the morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and
they came into the midst of the host in the morning watch, and slew the
Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it came to pass, that they which
remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together.
12 And the people said unto Samuel, Who is he that said, Shall Saul reign over
us? bring the men, that we may put them to death.
-
Who is he that said, Saul shall reign over us?
-
1 Samuel 10:27 But the children of
Belial said, How shall this man save
us? And they despised him, and
brought him no presents. But he held his
peace.
-
Belial = without profit, worthlessness,
destruction, wickedness: evil, naughty, ungodly
(men), wicked.
-
Belial = The meaning of this word as found in
the Scriptures is worthlessness,
and hence reckless, lawlessness.
-
Belial = The expression son or man of Belial
must be understood as meaning simply a
worthless, lawless fellow.
-
Belial = is generally understood as an
appellative of Satan, as the personification of
all that was bad.
-
2 Corinthians 6:15
And what
concord hath Christ
with Belial? or what part hath
he that believeth with an infidel?
-
16 And what agreement hath
the temple of God with idols? for ye are the
temple of the living God; as God hath said, I
will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will
be their God, and they shall be my people.
17 Wherefore come out from among them,
and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and
touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive
you,
18
And will be a Father unto you, and ye
shall be my sons and daughters, saith
the Lord Almighty.
-
And what concord
hath Christ with Belial? By Belial, in this
text, very good interpreters understand the
devil; judging that the apostle here opposeth
Christ, who is the Head of
Believers and of the church.
-
To him Satan who is the
head of all unbelievers, and the god of
the world.
-
The term is used only in this place in the New
Testament, but very often in the Old Testament,
to express men notoriously wicked and scandalous
-
2 Corinthians 4:4 In whom the god of this world (Satan) hath
blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of
the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should
shine unto them.
-
John 8:23 And he said unto them, Ye
are from beneath; I am from above:
ye are of this world;
13 And Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day: for to day the
Lord hath wrought salvation in Israel.
14 Then said Samuel to the people, Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the
kingdom there.
15 And all the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before the
Lord in Gilgal; and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace offerings before
the Lord; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.
-
1 Samuel 10:17 And Samuel called the people
together unto the LORD to Mizpeh;
-
2 Samuel 19:15 So the king returned, and
came to Jordan. And Judah came to Gilgal, to go
to meet the king, to conduct the king over
Jordan.
• Exactly 2520 years from the exile
of Benjamin, Iceland became an independent nation.
•
The first tribe to be
conquered by the Assyrians was Manasseh,
in 745 B.C. Exactly 2520 years later America became a nation on July 4, 1776.
(Leviticus. 26: 28-46) God warned Israel that if they persisted in continually
breaking His Laws, not only would curses come upon them.
He would punish them for seven times, (a time being 360 years, seven times would
be 2520 years) and would banish them from the land of Palestine and scatter them
among the heathens (like lost sheep)
