Proverbs 20:1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.
  • Nobody listens to a drunk, some fools will
  • Mocker = scoffer
  • Raging = a brawler
  • Is deceived = to go astray
  • 1 Tim 5:23 Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities.
  • God said, drink a little, not a gallon
2 The fear of a king is as the roaring of a lion: whoso provoketh him to anger sinneth against his own soul.
  • Sinneth = bear the blame, commit [sin], by fault, harm he hath done, offer cause, make, trespass.
3 It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.
  • A fool is always starting trouble
  • Meddling = breaking out
  • If you can cease from strife = you will have peace
4 The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.
  • Sluggard = lazy person
  • Plow, plowing always done during the early rains
  • Cold = Autumn
  • Cold put for Autumn, and Autumn put for abundance of fruit possessed at that time
5 Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.
  • Deep water is real still, a wise person knows where to find understanding
  • A person with wisdom will know, where to find knowledge, in God's word
6 Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?
  • If you tell someone you're going to do something, do it
  • Keep your word, and you're going to be successful
  • His word is better than a contract
7 The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.
  • If you teach your children what's right, they're going to do what's right; as they become adults
  • Blessed = happy
  • Man walketh in his integrity = This is a person that has a job, and they will work.
  • A lazy person works hard at not doing anything.
8 A king that sitteth in the throne of judgment scattereth away all evil with his eyes.
  • A good king does what's right
9 Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?
  • Ecclesiastes 7:20 For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.
  • Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
  • Can = is able to
  • I am Pure, illustration: Job before he learned his lesson (Job 9:17)
10 Divers weights, and divers measures, both of them are alike abomination to the Lord.
  • He's has two sets of weights
  • One to buy from and another to sell, He cheats people
  • God doesn't like it, it's abomination to the Lord
11 Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.
  • Pure = accurate
  • Right = correct
  • Your actions tells people what kind of person you are.
  • The two sets of balances = one to buy and one to sell
12 The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the Lord hath made even both of them.
  • If you're studying God's word and listening, God's going to give you wisdom.
13 Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread.
  • This is talking about a lazy person.
  • He's not talking about the disabled people
  • Come to poverty = become dispossessed
14 It is naught, it is naught, saith the buyer: but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth.
  • This is a person that tries to rip people off, then he goes and boasteth about how he cheated to get it.
  • Naught = very bad
  • If you cheated people, it's not long before you lose more than you cheated someone
15 There is gold, and a multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.
  • This is someone with wisdom and knowledge
16 Take his garment that is surety for a stranger: and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.
  • Pledge of him, who has become security for a false teacher
  • Strange woman = false teacher
17 Bread of deceit is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.
  • Bread of deceit = bread gained by deceit
  • Bread put by of part, for all kinds of food
  • Deceit = lying
  • Filled with gravel; or grit, implying utmost disappointment
  • It's better to be honest
18 Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war.
  • It's wise to keep people safe, if it means to go to war
19 He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.
  • Don't be around people that mock people
  • Meddle = mingle, mix thyself up, not same word in verse 3
  • Lips put by of cause for the flattery spoken by them
  • They love to hear people that talk about someone
20 Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.
  • This is God's first promise to you, if you honour your father and mother, you will have a longer life
  • Ex 20:12 Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
  • Curseth = revileth
  • Lamp shall be put out, denoting that he shall die childless
21 An inheritance may be gotten hastily at the beginning; but the end thereof shall not be blessed.
  • He rips off his own family, he tries to take their brother or sister inheritance
22 Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the Lord, and he shall save thee.
  • God's going to take care of them
23 Divers weights are an abomination unto the Lord; and a false balance is not good.
  • This false balance, mention twice in this chapter
  • God's doesn't like it, when people try to cheat people.
24 Man's goings are of the Lord; how can a man then understand his own way?
  • 1st Man = Geber = a strong man's, mighty
  • 2nd Man = Adam = ruddy, common man
25 It is a snare to the man who devoureth that which is holy, and after vows to make inquiry.
  • Don't mislead God's children, It's better to not say anything
  • Devoureth = rashly promises
26 A wise king scattereth the wicked, and bringeth the wheel over them.
  • A wise king will do what's right
  • Wicked = lawless
27 The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord, searching all the inward parts of the belly.
  • If you follow God, the Holy Spirit is within you
  • Spirit = breath
  • Candle = lamp or light
  • The belly, put by for the heart, and the heart for its thoughts
28 Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upholden by mercy.
  • Mercy = loving kindness, grace or favour
29 The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the gray head.
  • Gray head = with wisdom
30 The blueness of a wound cleanseth away evil: so do stripes the inward parts of the belly.
  • God demands punished, when someone breaks the law
  • Cleanseth away = is cleansing = though = it be an evil

  The first tribe to be conquered by the Assyrians was Manasseh, in 745 B.C. Exactly 2520 years later America became a nation on July 4, 1776.
