Book of Kings
The book of Kings: Begins and ends with
1. Begins with king David and ends with king of Babylon.
2.
Opens with Temple built, and closes with Temple burnt.
3.
Begins with David's first successor on the throne of his
kingdom, and
4. Ends with David's last successor released from the
house of the captivity.
5.
Characters of all are tested by the standard David.
6.
Covering a period of 444 years: 921-477
7.
Kings, As compared with Chronicles, Kings and Samuel give the
history from the human point of view, while Chronicles gives the
same history from the Divine standpoint.
8. The former, as man
ruled the history; the latter, as God overruled it.
Saul's death, 1 Samuel 31:6, with 1 Chronicles 10:13,14
and in Kings, three verses given to Hezekiah's reformation, and
in Chronicles, three chapters.
The first king of Israel, Saul the son of Kish, and of the tribe
of Benjamin.
1 Kings 1:1 Now king David was old and stricken in years; and
they covered him with clothes, but he gat no heat.

David was about 70 years old
-
2 Samuel 5:4 David was thirty years old when he
began to reign, and he reigned forty years.
-
David had a rough life now at an old age he's
having problems staying warm.
2 Wherefore his servants said unto him, Let there be sought for
my lord the king a young virgin: and let her stand before the
king, and let her cherish him, and let her lie in thy bosom,
that my lord the king may get heat.

Servants = his advisers, probably medical

Virgin = damsel

Cherish = stand before him
-
David had problems staying warm
-
Ecclesiastes 4:11 Again, if two lie together,
then they have heat: but how can one be warm
alone?

Coasts = boarders

Joshua 19:18 And their border was toward
Jezreel, and Chesulloth, and Shunem,

1 Samuel 28:4 And the Philistines gathered
themselves together, and came and pitched in
Shunem: and Saul gathered all Israel together,
and they pitched in Gilboa.
3 So they sought for a fair damsel throughout all the coasts of
Israel, and found Abishag a Shunammite, and brought her to the
king.

1 Kings 2:17 And he said, Speak, I pray thee,
unto Solomon the king, (for he will not say thee
nay,) that he give me Abishag the Shunammite to
wife.

ministered unto him, Let there be fair young
virgins sought for the king:
3 And let the king appoint officers in all the
provinces of his kingdom, that they may gather
together all the fair young virgins unto
Shushan the palace, to the house of the
women unto the custody of Hege the king's
chamberlain, keeper of the women; and let their
things for purification be given them:

Here we have a type, a virgin deliver to the
King = 7th trump = Bible study hour the
Wedding
of the Lord
4 And the damsel was very fair, and cherished the king, and
ministered to him: but the king knew her not.

King knew her not = Here we can see nothing
going on between David and the virgin
5 Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, I
will be king: and he prepared him chariots and horsemen, and
fifty men to run before him.

Adonijah = Fourth son of David

Here we have another type,
Adonijah going to try and to take David throne
way from him, same as Satan in the end times.

2 Thessalonians 2:3 Let no
man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come,
except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be
revealed, the son of perdition (Satan);
4 Who opposeth and
exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is
worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God,
shewing himself that he is God.

2 Thessalonians 2:8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the
Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall
destroy with the brightness of his coming:

coming is after the
working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,

6 And his father had not displeased him at any time in saying,
Why hast thou done so? and he also was a very goodly man; and
his mother bare him after Absalom.

His mother = Haggith

2 Kings 11:1 And when Athaliah the
mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was
dead, she arose and destroyed all the seed
royal.
2 But Jehosheba, the daughter of king
Joram, sister of Ahaziah, took Joash
the son of Ahaziah and stole him from among the
king's sons which were slain; and they hid him,
even him and his nurse, in the bedchamber from
Athaliah, so that he was not slain.

2 Samuel 3:3 And his second, Chileab, of Abigail
the wife of Nabal the Carmelite; and the third,
Absalom the son of Maacah the daughter of Talmai
king of Geshur;
4 And the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith;
and the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital;

David had a problem despise his sons

1 Samuel 3:13 For I have told him that I will
judge his house for ever for the iniquity which
he knoweth; because his sons made themselves
vile, and he restrained them not.
7 And he conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah, and with
Abiathar the priest: and they following Adonijah helped him.
8 But Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and
Nathan the prophet, and Shimei, and Rei, and the mighty men
which belonged to David, were not with Adonijah.

Zadok the priest = just = last days = the elect
= (Ezekiel
44)

Here's nothing type, the elect will not be
joining Satan and his children in the end times

In the last days the elect will wait on the Lord
9 And Adonijah slew sheep and oxen and fat cattle by the stone
of Zoheleth, which is by En-rogel, and called all his brethren
the king's sons, and all the men of Judah the king's servants:
-
En-rogel = well or spring of Rogel. South side
of Jerusalem, in the Kidron valley.

Zoheleth = serpent
-
Here's they're going too party = to anointed Adonijah

Remember David made it clear that Solomon was going
to be next king
10 But Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah, and the mighty men, and
Solomon his brother, he called not.
-
1 Chronicles 22:9 Behold, a son shall be born to
thee, who shall be a man of rest; and I will
give him rest from all his enemies round about:
for his name shall be Solomon, and I will give
peace and quietness unto Israel in his days.

David made it were clear that Solomon was going
to be next king
11 Wherefore Nathan spake unto Bath-sheba the mother of Solomon,
saying, Hast thou not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith
doth reign, and David our lord knoweth it not?

2 Samuel 11 David had affair with Bath-sheba,
she had a son Solomon

2 Samuel 12:24 And David comforted Bath-sheba
his wife, and went in unto her, and lay
with her: and she bare a son, and he
called his name Solomon: and the Lord
loved him.

Verse 5 Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted
himself, saying, I will be king: and he prepared
him chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run
before him.

Haggith; and the fifth, Shephatiah the son of

In 1Chronicles 22:8 God had already chosen
Solomon

1 Chronicles 22:8 But the word of the Lord came
to me, saying, Thou hast shed blood abundantly,
and hast made great wars: thou shalt not build
an house unto my name, because thou hast shed
much blood upon the earth in my sight.
9 Behold, a son shall be born to thee, who shall
be a man of rest; and I will give him rest from
all his enemies round about: for his name shall
be Solomon, and I will give peace and quietness
unto Israel in his days.
10 He shall build an house for my name; and he
shall be my son, and I will be his father; and I
will establish the throne of his kingdom over
Israel for ever.
11 Now, my son, the Lord be with thee; and
prosper thou, and build the house of the Lord
thy God, as he hath said of thee.
12 Now therefore come, let me, I pray thee, give thee counsel,
that thou mayest save thine own life, and the life of thy son
Solomon.
13 Go and get thee in unto king David, and say unto him, Didst
not thou, my lord, O king, swear unto thine handmaid, saying,
Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit
upon my throne? why then doth Adonijah reign?
14 Behold, while thou yet talkest there with the king, I also
will come in after thee, and confirm thy words.

I'll be a second witness to this
15 And Bath-sheba went in unto the king into the chamber: and
the king was very old; and Abishag the Shunammite ministered
unto the king.
16 And Bath-sheba bowed, and did obeisance unto the king. And
the king said, What wouldest thou?
17 And she said unto him, My lord, thou swarest by the Lord thy
God unto thine handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall
reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne.
18 And now, behold, Adonijah reigneth; and now, my lord the
king, thou knowest it not:
19 And he hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance,
and hath called all the sons of the king, and Abiathar the
priest, and Joab the captain of the host: but Solomon thy
servant hath he not called.

Solomon wasn't invited
20 And thou, my lord, O king, the eyes of all Israel are upon
thee, that thou shouldest tell them who shall sit on the throne
of my lord the king after him.

Thou = thou therefore

God doesn't like Civil war, brother against
brother

21 Otherwise it shall come to pass, when my lord the king shall
sleep with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon shall be
counted offenders.

Offenders = a type of sin or sinner
22 And, lo, while she yet talked with the king, Nathan the
prophet also came in.
23 And they told the king, saying, Behold Nathan the prophet.
And when he was come in before the king, he bowed himself before
the king with his face to the ground.
24 And Nathan said, My lord, O king, hast thou said, Adonijah
shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne?
25 For he is gone down this day, and hath slain oxen and fat
cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the king's
sons, and the captains of the host, and Abiathar the priest;
and, behold, they eat and drink before him, and say, God save
king Adonijah.

Here's we seeing the type, Satan coming and
saying he's Christ, at the 6th trumpet
26 But me, even me thy servant, and Zadok the priest, and
Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and thy servant Solomon, hath he
not called.
-
Jehoiada = David bodyguard
27 Is this thing done by my lord the king, and thou hast not
shewed it unto thy servant, who should sit on the throne of my
lord the king after him?
28 Then king David answered and said, Call me Bath-sheba. And
she came into the king's presence, and stood before the king.
29 And the king sware, and said, As the Lord liveth, that hath
redeemed my soul out of all distress,
-
David And Goliath, 1 Samuel 17:34 And David said unto Saul, Thy
servant kept his father's sheep, and there came a lion, and a
bear.
-
David was the only one to stand up against Goliath
-
David the son of Jesse
30 Even as I sware unto thee by the Lord God of Israel, saying,
Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit
upon my throne in my stead; even so will I certainly do this
day.
31 Then Bath-sheba bowed with her face to the earth, and did
reverence to the king, and said, Let my lord king David live for
ever.
32 And king David said, Call me Zadok the priest, and Nathan the
prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada. And they came before
the king.

All these were faithful to David
33 The king also said unto them, Take with you the servants of
your lord, and cause Solomon my son to ride upon mine own mule,
and bring him down to Gihon:
-
With Solomon riding David mule, was a sign who
was going to be the next king
-
Mine own mule = David had not disobeyed
-
Deut 17:16 But he shall not multiply horses to
himself, nor cause the people to return to
Egypt, to the end that he should multiply
horses: forasmuch as the Lord hath said unto
you, Ye shall henceforth return no more that
way.
-
As Absalom had done
-
2 Samuel 15:1 And it came to pass after this, that
Absalom prepared him chariots and horses, and
fifty men to run before him.
-
Adonijah = 1 Kings 1:5 Then Adonijah the son of
Haggith exalted himself, saying, I will be king:
and he prepared him chariots and horsemen, and
fifty men to run before him.

Gihon = west side
-
Israel was one of the wealthiest nation at this
time
34 And let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him
there king over Israel: and blow ye with the trumpet, and say,
God save king Solomon.
-
Gihon = west side = they could
see what was going on.
-
If the formal was still living, they would
anoint the next king
35 Then ye shall come up after him, that he may come and sit
upon my throne; for he shall be king in my stead: and I have
appointed him to be ruler over Israel and over Judah.
-
Solomon was about nineteen years old
-
The kingdom was divided when Saul was king
-
Saul The first king of Israel, the son of Kish,
and of the tribe of Benjamin.
36 And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the king, and said,
Amen: the Lord God of my lord the king say so too.
37 As the Lord hath been with my lord the king, even so be he
with Solomon, and make his throne greater than the throne of my
lord king David.
38 So Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the
son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, went
down, and caused Solomon to ride upon king David's mule, and
brought him to Gihon.
-
Gihon was near Jerusalem, and near Serpent rock
where they could see what was going on.
39 And Zadok the priest took an horn of oil out of the
tabernacle, and anointed Solomon. And they blew the trumpet; and
all the people said, God save king Solomon.
-
Tabernacle = tent = Not the Tabernacle at
Gibeon, but David's tabernacle
-
2 Samuel 6:17 And they brought in the ark of the
Lord, and set it in his place, in the midst of
the tabernacle that David had pitched for it:
and David offered burnt offerings and peace
offerings before the Lord.
40 And all the people came up after him, and the people piped
with pipes, and rejoiced with great joy, so that the earth rent
with the sound of them.
-
Piped with pipes = playing loudly on pipes.
41 And Adonijah and all the guests that were with him heard it
as they had made an end of eating. And when Joab heard the sound
of the trumpet, he said, Wherefore is this noise of the city
being in an uproar?
-
Another type = When the seventh trumpet sound,
they're going to be saying the same
42 And while he yet spake, behold, Jonathan the son of Abiathar
the priest came: and Adonijah said unto him, Come in; for thou
art a valiant man, and bringest good tidings.
43 And Jonathan answered and said to Adonijah, Verily our lord
king David hath made Solomon king.

David was loved by the people

Jonathan = David's faithful messenger

2 Samuel 15:36 Behold, they have there with them
their two sons, Ahimaaz Zadok's son, and
Jonathan Abiathar's son; and by them ye shall
send unto me every thing that ye can hear.
-
2 Samuel 17:17 Now Jonathan and Ahimaaz stayed
by En-rogel; for they might not be seen to come
into the city: and a wench went and told them;
and they went and told king David
44 And the king hath sent with him Zadok the priest, and Nathan
the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the
Cherethites, and the Pelethites, and they have caused him to
ride upon the king's mule:

This is bad news for the people that joined the
wrong king = another type
-
Cherethites = A bodyguard
-
1 Samuel 30:14 We made an invasion upon the
south of the Cherethites, and upon the coast
which belongeth to Judah, and upon the south of
Caleb; and we burned Ziklag with fire.
45 And Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him
king in Gihon: and they are come up from thence rejoicing, so
that the city rang again. This is the noise that ye have heard.

The Zadok will be rejoicing when Christ returns,
they will be singing the song of Moses
46 And also Solomon sitteth on the throne of the kingdom.
-
Sitteth = hath taken (his) seat
47 And moreover the king's servants came to bless our lord king
David, saying, God make the name of Solomon better than thy
name, and make his throne greater than thy throne. And the king
bowed himself upon the bed.
-
David was near death at this time
-
Bowed = worshipped
-
Genesis 47:31 And he said, Swear unto me. And he
sware unto him. And Israel bowed himself upon
the bed's head.
48 And also thus said the king, Blessed be the Lord God of
Israel, which hath given one to sit on my throne this day, mine
eyes even seeing it.
-
This is going t happen when Christ returns
49 And all the guests that were with Adonijah were afraid, and
rose up, and went every man his way.
50 And Adonijah feared because of Solomon, and arose, and went,
and caught hold on the horns of the altar.
51 And it was told Solomon, saying, Behold, Adonijah feareth
king Solomon: for, lo, he hath caught hold on the horns of the
altar, saying, Let king Solomon swear unto me to day that he
will not slay his servant with the sword.
52 And Solomon said, If he will shew himself a worthy man, there
shall not an hair of him fall to the earth: but if wickedness
shall be found in him, he shall die.

Solomon was a good king until he started messing
around with strange women
-
1 Kings 2:12 Then sat Solomon upon the throne of
David his father; and his kingdom was
established greatly.
13 And Adonijah the son of Haggith came to Bath-sheba
the mother of Solomon. And she said, Comest thou
peaceably? And he said, Peaceably.
53 So king Solomon sent, and they brought him down from the
altar. And he came and bowed himself to king Solomon: and
Solomon said unto him, Go to thine house.
• Exactly 2520 years from the exile
of Benjamin, Iceland became an independent nation.
•
The first tribe to be
conquered by the Assyrians was Manasseh,
in 745 B.C. Exactly 2520 years later America became a nation on July 4, 1776.
(Leviticus. 26: 28-46) God warned Israel that if they persisted in continually
breaking His Laws, not only would curses come upon them.
He would punish them for seven times, (a time being 360 years, seven times would
be 2520 years) and would banish them from the land of Palestine and scatter them
among the heathens (like lost sheep)
