Ezra 4:1 Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children
of the captivity builded the temple unto the Lord God of Israel;
-
2 Kings 17:24 And the king of Assyria brought men from Babylon, and from Cuthah, and from
Ava, and from Hamath, and from Sepharvaim, and placed them in the cities of
Samaria instead of the children of Israel: and they possessed Samaria, and dwelt
in the cities thereof.
-
The king of Assyria brought men from Babylon =
confusion
-
They have mixed with other races and other
religions
25 And so it was at the beginning of their dwelling there, that they feared not
the Lord: therefore the Lord sent lions among them, which slew some of them.
26 Wherefore they spake to the king of Assyria, saying, The nations which thou
hast removed, and placed in the cities of Samaria, know not the manner of the
God of the land: therefore he hath sent lions among them, and, behold, they slay
them, because they know not the manner of the God of the land.
2 Then they came to Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and said unto
them, Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice
unto him since the days of Esar-haddon king of Assur, which brought us up
hither.
-
They = Samaritans
-
Chief = heads
-
We seek your God = A priest had been sent
to these Samaritans
-
2 Kings 17:28 Then one of the priests whom they
had carried away from Samaria came and dwelt in
Beth-el, and taught them how they should fear
the Lord.
29 Howbeit every nation made gods of
their own, and put them in the houses
of the high places which the Samaritans had
made, every nation in their cities wherein they
dwelt.
30 And the men of Babylon made Succoth-benoth,
and the men of Cuth made Nergal, and the men of
Hamath made Ashima,
31 And the Avites made Nibhaz and Tartak, and
the Sepharvites burnt their
children in fire to Adrammelech and
Anammelech, the gods of
Sepharvaim.
32 So they feared the Lord, and made unto
themselves of the lowest of
them priests of the high places, which
sacrificed for them in the houses of the
high places.
33 They feared the Lord, and
served their own gods, after the manner
of the nations whom they carried away from
thence.
34 Unto this day they do
after the former manners: they
fear not the Lord,
neither do they after their statutes, or after
their ordinances, or after the law and
commandment which the Lord commanded the
children of Jacob, whom he named Israel;
35 With whom the Lord had made a covenant, and
charged them, saying, Ye
shall not fear other gods,
nor bow yourselves to them,
nor serve them, nor
sacrifice to them:
-
We do sacrifice unto Him = "although we
have not been sacrificing". Some two early
printed editions, with add "unto Him".
-
Esar-haddon. The son and successor of
Sennacherib
-
2 Kings 19:37 And it came to pass, as he
was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god,
that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons smote him
with the sword: and they escaped into the land
of Armenia. And Esarhaddon his son reigned in
his stead.
-
Assur = Assyria.
-
2 Chronicles 33:11 Wherefore the LORD brought
upon them the captains of the host of the king
of Assyria, which took Manasseh among the
thorns, and bound him with fetters, and carried
him to Babylon.
-
Captains = princes
-
1 Kings 9:15 And this is the reason of the levy
which king Solomon raised; for to build the
house of the Lord, and his own house, and Millo,
and the wall of Jerusalem, and Hazor, and
Megiddo, and Gezer.
16 For Pharaoh king of Egypt had gone up, and
taken Gezer, and burnt
it with fire, and slain the Canaanites
that dwelt in the city, and given it for a
present unto his daughter, Solomon's wife.
17 And Solomon built Gezer, and
Beth-horon the nether,
18 And Baalath, and Tadmor in the wilderness, in
the land,
19 And all the cities of store that Solomon had,
and cities for his chariots, and cities for his
horsemen, and that which Solomon desired to
build in Jerusalem, and in Lebanon, and in all
the land of his dominion.
20 And all the people that were left of the
Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and
Jebusites, which were not of the
children of Israel,
21 Their children that were left after
them in the land, whom the
children of Israel also were not able utterly to
destroy, upon those did Solomon levy a
tribute of bond service unto this day.
22 But of the children of Israel did Solomon
make no bondmen: but they were men of war, and
his servants, and his princes, and his
captains, and rulers of his chariots, and his
horsemen.
-
The king of Assyria = Esar-haddon.
-
Among the thorns = with hooks, or rings.
-
A monument has been found showing this king Esar-haddon
leading two captives with hooks or rings through
their lips.
-
And in an inscription he says: "I transported
(from Syria) into Assyria men and women
innumerable . . . I counted among the vassals of
my realm twelve kings of Syria, beyond the
mountains, Balou king of Tyre, Manasseh king of
Judah".
3 But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the chief of the fathers of
Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build an house unto our
God; but we ourselves together will build unto the Lord God of Israel, as king
Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us.
-
We ourselves together will build unto the Lord
God of Israel
-
King Cyrus king of Persia gave us the order to
do this
-
God did not promise us a rose garden
-
Don't get off track, do as God tells us to do.
-
Ezra 1:1 Now in the first year of Cyrus king of
Persia, that the word of the LORD by the mouth
of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the LORD stirred
up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he
made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom,
and put it also in writing, saying,
-
2 Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, The
LORD God of heaven hath given me all the
kingdoms of the earth; and he hath charged me to
build him an house at Jerusalem, which is
in Judah.
4 Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and
troubled them in building,
-
Ezra 3:3 And they set the altar upon his
bases; for fear was upon them because of
the people of those countries: and they offered
burnt offerings thereon unto the LORD, even
burnt offerings morning and evening.
-
Troubled them in = terrified them from
5 And hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days
of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.
-
About fifteen years they were rebuilding the
temple
-
Hired = Nahum 1:11 There is one
come out of thee, that imagineth evil against
the LORD, a wicked counseller.
-
Cyrus = The son of Astyages and Esther
-
Ezra 4:24 Then ceased the work of the
house of God which is at Jerusalem. So it
ceased unto the second year of the reign of
Darius king of Persia.
6 And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, wrote they unto
him an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.
-
Ahasuerus = represents kings of Persia
-
Esther 1:1 Now it came to pass in the
days of Ahasuerus, (this is Ahasuerus
which reigned, from India even unto Ethiopia,
over an hundred and seven and twenty
provinces:)
-
Ahasuerus = Nahum 1:11 There is one
come out of thee, that imagineth evil against
the LORD, a wicked counseller.
7 And in the days of Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest
of their companions, unto Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the
letter was written in the Syrian tongue, and interpreted in the Syrian tongue.
-
Artaxerxes = the great king
-
Ezra 4:3 But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the
rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel, said
unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to
build an house unto our God; but we ourselves
together will build unto the LORD God of Israel,
as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded
us.
-
Nehemiah 2:20 Then answered I them, and
said unto them, The God of heaven, he will
prosper us; therefore we his servants will arise
and build: but ye have no portion, nor right,
nor memorial, in Jerusalem.
-
Companions = colleagues or associates.
8 Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem
to Artaxerxes the king in this sort:
-
From Ezra 6:19 -- Ezra 7:11 is Hebrew; and
Syriac again from Ezra 7:12-27; then Hebrew.
-
Ezra 6:18 And they set the priests in their
divisions, and the Levites in their courses, for
the service of God, which is at Jerusalem; as it
is written in the book of Moses.
-
The chancellor = the master of judgments or
decrees.
-
The scribe = or secretary
-
In this sort = after this manner
9 Then wrote Rehum the chancellor, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of
their companions; the Dinaites, the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the
Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Susanchites, the Dehavites, and
the Elamites,
-
Dinaites = Probably from a Persian city =
Apharsathchites = A Medo-Persian tribe.
-
Tarpelites = Probably from east of Elymais.
-
Apharsites = Of Persian origin.
-
Archevites = From Babylonia.
-
Susanchites = From the Persian province or
city of Shushan, the capital of Elam.
-
Dehavites = the Dahae of Herodotus
-
Elamites. From a province of Persia
10 And the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Asnappar brought over,
and set in the cities of Samaria, and the rest that are on this side the river,
and at such a time.
-
Nations = peoples
-
Asnapper = Assur-bani-pal, or Sardanapalus, the
only Assyrian king who got into Elam, or held
Shushan (now Susa) its capital.
-
On this side = beyond, on the west side:
regarded from the east side of the Euphrates.
-
At such a time = This may refer to the date of
the letter; or be rendered, as in Revised
Version, "and so forth".
11 This is the copy of the letter that they sent unto him, even unto Artaxerxes
the king; Thy servants the men on this side the river, and at such a time.
-
Ezra 3:3 And they set the altar upon his
bases; for fear was upon them because of
the people of those countries: and they offered
burnt offerings thereon unto the LORD, even
burnt offerings morning and evening.
12 Be it known unto the king, that the Jews which came up from thee to us are
come unto Jerusalem, building the rebellious and the bad city, and have set up
the walls thereof, and joined the foundations.
-
Jews = Nehemiah, Hanani, and friends.
-
The name by which they were known to Gentiles,
because the majority belonged to Judah.
-
Set up the walls = Quite true; for Nehemiah's
work had long preceded this.
-
And note that, when Nehemiah's work was done
(Ezra 7:4) and the houses built, the house of
God was still lying waste. The Temple not
mentioned here.
-
Haggia 1:1 In the second year of Darius the
king, in the sixth month, in the first day of
the month, came the word of the Lord by Haggai
the prophet unto Zerubbabel the son of
Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the
son of Josedech, the high priest, saying,
2 Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, This
people say, The time is not come, the time that
the Lord's house should be built.
3 Then came the word of the Lord by Haggai the
prophet, saying,
4 Is it time for you, O ye, to dwell in your
cieled houses, and this house lie waste?
13 Be it known now unto the king, that, if this city be builded, and the walls
set up again, then will they not pay toll, tribute, and custom, and so thou
shalt endamage the revenue of the kings.
-
Nehemiah 5:4 There were also that said, We have
borrowed money for the king's tribute, and
that upon our lands and vineyards.
14 Now because we have maintenance from the king's palace, and it was not meet
for us to see the king's dishonour, therefore have we sent and certified the
king;
-
We have maintenance = the salt of the palace is
our salt.
-
Numbers 18:19 All the heave offerings of the
holy things, which the children of Israel offer
unto the LORD, have I given thee, and thy sons
and thy daughters with thee, by a statute for
ever: it is a covenant of salt for ever
before the LORD unto thee and to thy seed with
thee.
-
Covenant of salt = Hebrew covenant =
berith, from barah = to cut; hence, to
eat.
-
As salt was scarce and precious. and used with
all eating, so it was put, by, for eating, just
as the breaking of bread was.
-
Hence, when wages were paid in kind, by finding
the worker in food, "salt" was put for wages
generally; so that a worker was spoken of as
being worth, or not worth, his "salt".
-
"A covenant of salt" was therefore a covenant
made by sacrifice, which was first cut in
two and then eaten, thus solemnizing an
inviolable covenant.
-
Jeremiah 34:18 And I will give the men that have
transgressed my covenant, which have not
performed the words of the covenant which they
had made before me, when they cut the calf in
twain, and passed between the parts thereof,
15 That search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers: so shalt
thou find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious
city, and hurtful unto kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition
within the same of old time: for which cause was this city destroyed.
-
2 Kings 24:20 For through the anger of the LORD
it came to pass in Jerusalem and Judah, until he
had cast them out from his presence, that
Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon.
16 We certify the king that, if this city be builded again, and the walls
thereof set up, by this means thou shalt have no portion on this side the river.
-
2 Samuel 8:3 David smote also Hadadezer, the son
of Rehob, king of Zobah, as he went to recover
his border at the river Euphrates.
17 Then sent the king an answer unto Rehum the chancellor, and to Shimshai the
scribe, and to the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria, and unto the
rest beyond the river, Peace, and at such a time.
-
Answer = Chaldee = pithgam = an order or decree
= A Persian word.
-
Daniel 3:16 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego,
answered and said to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar,
we are not careful to answer thee in this
matter.
-
Daniel 4:17 This matter is by the decree
of the watchers, and the demand by the word of
the holy ones: to the intent that the living may
know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of
men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and
setteth up over it the basest of men.
18 The letter which ye sent unto us hath been plainly read before me.
19 And I commanded, and search hath been made, and it is found that this city of
old time hath made insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and sedition
have been made therein.
-
I commanded = I made a decree
-
Made insurrection = Chaldee lifted itself up.
-
This is the reason why Nebuchadnezzar destroyed
Jerusalem. they people rebellion against God's
Ways
-
Ezra 5:17 Now therefore, if it seem
good to the king, let there be search made in
the king's treasure house, which is there
at Babylon, whether it be so, that a
decree was made of Cyrus the king to build this
house of God at Jerusalem, and let the king send
his pleasure to us concerning this matter.
20 There have been mighty kings also over Jerusalem, which have ruled over all
countries beyond the river; and toll, tribute, and custom, was paid unto them.
-
Mighty kings = Such as David and Solomon
-
When David and Solomon reigned = they were
the most powerful Nations of the world
-
1 Kings 4:21 And Solomon reigned over all
kingdoms from the river unto the land of the
Philistines, and unto the border of Egypt: they
brought presents, and served Solomon all the
days of his life.
-
1 Kings 4:24 For he had dominion over all
the region on this side the river, from
Tiphsah even to Azzah, over all the kings on
this side the river: and he had peace on all
sides round about him.
21 Give ye now commandment to cause these men to cease, and that this city be
not builded, until another commandment shall be given from me.
-
Commandment = decree
-
Luke 20:22 Is it lawful for us to give
tribute unto Caesar, or no?
-
Ezra 4:19 And I commanded, and search
hath been made, and it is found that this city
of old time hath made insurrection against
kings, and that rebellion and sedition
have been made therein.
22 Take heed now that ye fail not to do this: why should damage grow to the hurt
of the kings?
-
Esther 3:8 And Haman said unto
king Ahasuerus, There is a certain
people scattered abroad and dispersed among the
people in all the provinces of thy kingdom; and
their laws are diverse from all people;
neither keep they the king's laws: therefore it
is not for the king's profit to suffer
them.
-
9 If it please the king, let it be
written that they may be destroyed: and
I will pay ten thousand talents of silver to the
hands of those that have the charge of
the business, to bring it into the king's
treasuries.
23 Now when the copy of king Artaxerxes' letter was read before Rehum, and
Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went up in haste to Jerusalem
unto the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power.
-
By force = Chaldee by arm; "arm" being put by
Figure of speech Metonymy (of Cause), for the
force put forth by it.
-
Ezra 4:8 Rehum the chancellor and
Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against
Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king in this sort:
-
Micah 2:1 Woe to them that devise
iniquity, and work evil upon their
beds! when the morning is light, they practise
it, because it is in the power of their
hand.
-
Romans 3:15 Their feet are swift
to shed blood:
24 Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem. So it ceased
unto the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
-
Darius
= This was Darius
Hystaspes, one of the seven princes who slew the
usurper Smerdis: he ascended the throne of
Persia, and reigned 36 years.
-
Ezra 4:5 And hired counsellers against them, to
frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus
king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius
king of Persia.
-
Ezra 5:5
But the eye of their
God was upon the elders of the Jews, that they
could not cause them to cease, till the matter
came to Darius: and then they returned answer by
letter concerning this matter.
Ezra 6:1
Then Darius the king
made a decree, and search was made in the house
of the rolls, where the treasures were laid up
in Babylon.
Haggai 1:15
In the four and
twentieth day of the sixth month, in the second
year of Darius the king.
1 Thessalonians 2:18
Wherefore we would
have come unto you, even I Paul, once and again;
but Satan hindered us.
• Exactly 2520 years from the exile
of Benjamin, Iceland became an independent nation.
•
The first tribe to be
conquered by the Assyrians was Manasseh,
in 745 B.C. Exactly 2520 years later America became a nation on July 4, 1776.
(Leviticus. 26: 28-46) God warned Israel that if they persisted in continually
breaking His Laws, not only would curses come upon them.
He would punish them for seven times, (a time being 360 years, seven times would
be 2520 years) and would banish them from the land of Palestine and scatter them
among the heathens (like lost sheep)
